This is some classic MLM bullshit, getting people personally and financially invested in others subscribing as a sunk cost fallacy mechanism, perfectly targeted at the demographics who fall for this kind of thing who are also their main viewerbase I suppose.

It's also a perfect cognitive safety net for if (when) it all collapses so those ripped off feel like they were doing their part to own the libs etc.

I'd seen some polling (nationwide not Hartlepool) from companies I was unfamiliar with compared to YouGov showing a much smaller gap between Labour and the Tories but that's not seeming to apply to Hartlepool.

There's also another potential by-election in a tougher red wall seat to win for the Tories if the current Labour MP wins a Mayoral position (can't remember the constituency name!).

At the time it was massive, why it's not getting much coverage during the trial I don't know.

I can't see any reason to have been tasering for 33 seconds. I've seen no mention of him exhibiting signs of ABD or excited delirium. A shot of the taser sends a 5 second shot, you then have to manually apply any further charge. So it was clearly the officers decision to apply for so long.

I think classism is more internalised than that. The English as a people like to be ruled over - it's evidenced in an open love of the monarchy as well as a tendency to vote for a ruling elite. That the ruling elite exists and is accepted is what keeps itself in power, with self-perpetuating logic of people voting for continued rule of the elite because that is how it has always been. Classism being internalised extends that from "the way it has always been" to "the way it is supposed to be be". It's an aversion to change, but more than that it's a firmly-held but contradictory belief that change is both impossible and dangerous (if it were really impossible, then voting for it could not be dangerous).

This is why the usual arguments made by a working class Conservative voter include both "it would be worse under Labour" and "all politicians are the same". Criticism against the concept of a ruling elite is replied to with an assertion that removing it is impossible, yet suggestion of an alternative is met with an assertion that the alternative would be worse. I think that logical contradiction is at the heart of classism in England.

There is also class stratification which is very comparable to US Trump voters - the idea that voting for your own suffering is ok, as long as someone else is suffering more. It's a need for superiority over any desire for a fair or progressive society. That's also a fundamental part of English identity, especially in the vestiges of Empire and colonialism. Sure there might be a ruling elite above oneself, but you're still English so you're still better than the rest of the world!

Combine the two and that's why a working class who do not benefit from a Conservative government will still vote for it.
