It's become normalised. It's such a problem and isn't getting the attention it needs. The kids involved are getting younger and younger as well.

Yeah that's the bit that just boggles my mind, I just can't comprehend how a child can do something like that to another child. It's mob mentality in the extreme. When I was 14, the worst a group of kids would do is maybe nick some sweets if they'd been egged on by each other, now it seems they commit horrific murders for apparent slights or disrespect.

I think in general you'd label someone that stabbed and shot an innocent child as a psychopath, but surely all these kids can't be psychopaths? It's just desperate, the absolute strawberry floating state of it.

Are there stats that it is in fact getting worse? I'm sure I heard similar stories of kids getting shot/stabbed by other kids when I was growing up in the 90s.

The only one of note in the 90s that I can think of was Jamie Bulger, but that wasn't a gang-related killing like the ones we have on a weekly basis now, that child-on-child murder was unheard of at the time (blurgh, makes me choke up even thinking about that one, so horrible :( ).

I'm no authority on the matter though so I'm sure someone else can reel off some stats that prove me wrong. It might just be a case of reporting bias, where we think it's happening more because it's reported more, I dunno.

I can't find anything that shows age of offender/victim, but murder rates are low compared to the past.

Thanks.

I think we need to be very careful about supposing these crimes are getting worse without evidence - it's easy to think things were better back in our day. Not saying you're wrong preezy as i'm also not an expert but recency bias and rolling news surely play a part.

There's a very large report you can find if you search UK homicide rates by age group that shows its fallen across all age groups over the last 10-15 years. The worst period for murders of under 14s seemed to be late 70s through to mid 80s.

Russell T Davies: Doctor Who writer brands Nadine Dorries a ‘f***ing idiot’ as anger boils over on BBC future - The Doctor Who and It’s A Sin screenwriter warned that the Government wants to ‘control culture’
https://inews.co.uk/news/russell-t-davi ... re-1237012
Ms Dorries, an outspoken critic of the BBC, was appointed Culture Secretary in the reshuffle last month in a move widely perceived to be an escalation of the Government’s so-called “war on woke.”

Before her appointment, she criticised the public service broadcaster for favouring what she said were “very left wing, often hypocritical and frequently patronising views”. In separate remarks, she suggested that “left-wing snowflakes” were destroying culture.

Since taking office last month she has ramped up pressure on the BBC, even questioning whether it would still exist in 10 years’ time, and saying that it needs to be “less elitist and snobbish”.

“The woman’s an idiot, a big f***ing idiot.”

He added: “I’m here to talk about the threat of public funding and the threat to public service broadcasting.”

He also criticised the Government for its handling of Channel 4, which aired his hit series It’s A Sin. “The threat that Channel 4 is under is even greater,” he said.

Asked if he thought Channel 4 would be privatised, Mr Davies said: “It’s doomed, nothing. It’s happened. It’s a fact, the Government has decided.

“Your loss, my loss, our loss and they’ll just give us some more bread and circuses to take our minds off it.”

Asked if the Government cares about culture, he added: “I think they care very much about controlling it. They are doing everything to change voting, rules. They’re doing everything to get in power and stay in power.”

Davies also criticised Ms Dorries over her claim that there was “nepotism”at the BBC, saying: “She talked about the BBC having nepotism when she employed her own daughter.”

Asked about previous comments he had made saying the BBC was under attack, and if it was the reason he had returned as the showrunner of Doctor Who, he said: “I’m always happy to work for the BBC because I love them and I think everyone should get in there, man those battlements and fight for that channel.

“We’ve got another 10-15 years of this Government, there’s no shifting them. They’re invulnerable somehow. So yes, I’m very, very happy to work with the BBC.”

Knife crime is definitely on the increase. 25k related crimes in 2013/14 to 49k related crimes in 2019/20. It only drops last year to 41k due to covid. From experience it’s back with a vengeance this year but you will have to wait till next year for the stats.

Is knife crime on the increase, or is it that changes in legislation and/or police priorities have changed? Is carrying a knife now being recorded more often, where it was more ignored in the past?

From that graph, it looks to me like the early 2010s saw a dip, but the graph overall doesn't show today is much different to the last 20 years.

I think it would be a really good idea if the government did a lot more to lift people out of poverty. Then they would be less likely to go stabby stabby.

Is there an easy way to share this post with the Home Secretary and Chancellor? They'll probably be a little embarrassed not to have thought of this idea themselves, but will no doubt jump straight on it for the good of society!

I've often thought about this, and I think it would solve a lot of issues.

It's also long term thing that requires a lot of funding. They won't do it, even if it is smart.

The big problem with FCE is that it is a very specific recording. If you discharge yourself as a lot of stabbing victims, particularly those young and involved in crime do or transferred to a different hospital or care provider then you are not included in the figures.

A finished consultant episode (FCE) is a continuous period of admitted patient care under one consultant within one healthcare provider.

As you say another issue is police recording practices have changed over the years but so have they in the NHS and other bodies. It’s always the case and makes it very difficult to compare records.

All I can do is talk from personal experience and we are definitely dealing with a lot more violence, particularly involving younger males.

There's also a load more online coverage of localised crimes now, everything is interconnected. 20 years ago you'd have to wait till the 6pm local news to be told there was an incident (assuming they chose to actually report it that day). And that was it.

These days Facebook and other social media lights up whenever a crime occurs nearby. I suppose it's a good thing in one way, keeps people informed, but it's also contributed to a higher sense of anxiety and a general sense of things being much worse than they used to be - when I'm not sure if overall that's actually the case.

THE Telegraph has confirmed that a report of Laura Kuenssberg and Michael Gove facing off in a rap battle and dance-off at the Conservative Party conference was false.

In a now-deleted tweet from Telegraph journalist Dominic Penna, it was said that the BBC’s political editor took on the senior Tory minister at an after party following Boris Johnson’s closing speech.

The incident was said to have happened as a Tory MP sang Vanilla Ice hit, Ice Ice Baby, on karaoke.

Penna also claimed BBC Newsnight editor Lewis Goodall also got involved. He was said to have performed ABBA’s Dancing Queen and quipped during the performance: “Have we got any Tory scum in the audience?” – a reference to controversial remarks from Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner about Tory Cabinet members.

Penna's tweet about the incident was posted last night but has since been deleted.

The BBC insisted the report was "completely untrue" before the Telegraph later confirmed that it had not happened.

The Telegraph's evening newsletter said: "Party conferences pass in a blur. Contrary to my report yesterday from INHouse karaoke, Laura Kuenssberg did not have a dance-off and rap battle with Cabinet minister Michael Gove.

"The BBC political editor was there, and chatting to people on the edge of the dance floor, with hundreds of other people. But no shapes were thrown with disc-loving Govey."

The Telegraph journalist also said earlier that although Gove was able to take part in a rap battle and dance-off, his advisers refused to let him take part in the karaoke.

“He’s not doing it,” one aide said. “Look at that Hancock video from a few years back when someone filmed him. He never recovered.”

Could do with a Private Eye confirmation. It’s just an oddly specific thing to bullshit about, isn’t it…

Bullshit. I saw the tweet from Dominic Penna while it was up & he was obviously taken aback at the universally negative reaction (as if we’re supposed to chortle along with the most senior journos in the country drinking and partying with the government). So now they have to try and sweep it into the memory hole.
