Wow! Extraordinary but true - some furious Conservative MPs are tonight working on a plot to CALL OFF the general election by replacing Rishi Sunak as leader before Parliament is dissolved next Thursday. One rebel Tory MP tells me he believes “several” more letters of no confidence in Sunak have been submitted to 1922 chairman Sir Graham Brady. The senior Conservative MP told me: “Today has clearly been an absolute disaster but the election is NOT irrevocable; up until the point of the Dissolution of Parliament - when the writs are moved to begin the contests, it can still be aborted. “In other words, if enough Tory MPs, who are clearly going to lose their seats in this already utterly shambolic campaign, write to Sir Graham Brady, tomorrow , the election could still be revoked.”
I don't for a second believe that'll happen, but it would be the funniest thing to ever happen in British politics. It'd make the Liz Truss premiership look like a period of stability.
It's probably one of the few things you could trust a GB News Presenter on, as they seem to be working with half of the Tory MPs.
Any vote of no confidence would fail, because ultimately that would be even more damaging to the Tory party. But simply holding one would be hugely damaging also, and incredibly entertaining!
I guess it technically possible, but there really isn't time to oust Sunak before he asks the King to dissolve Parliament.
Didn’t he do that this afternoon?
He'll do it next week formally I believe. It's generally televised.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that televised.
And Sunak said, “Earlier today, I spoke with His Majesty the King, to request the dissolution of Parliament. The King has granted this request…”
I know it’s not actually dissolved until next week, but the requesting has been done. I don’t think it can be undone.

I think technically if the leader changes it can be undone, but I don't think that'll happen.
It’s like when Ireland selected Father Ted to represent them at Eurovision. I don’t think they want to be in government any more. Hand the mess over to Labour to deal with.
I honestly believe Sunak and his team thought if he goes out in the pouring rain to give the speech then he would be seen as a tough guy who puts the country first and how the weather can't stop him doing his duty etc.. instead he's just been relentlessly trolled with memes and it's seen as a fitting setting for his tenure, drowning on his way out.
Yesterday had serious 'strawberry float this bullshit' energy from Sunak. I think he called an election because he'd just had enough. Maybe he actively wants a no confidence vote so just so he can leave.

I think this is the live stream from when Johnson went.
I can't see them stopping Sunak, it seems like too many blockers. If enough letters come in (and I doubt they will) they'll just delay the vote till after the election, if they try for the vote the speaker could deny the vote, if the vote happens Sunak will probably survive and there's no point him quitting this close to an election. Failing that they actually have to get one person to stand so they can try and stop the election. It's total madness.
I'm not even sure why the Rwanda thing ever became a flagship policy. I don't think even Conservatives care that much about it, it's got to be such a minority of voters who would make their choice based purely on that policy.
