I'm not sure he realises that won't be the big win he's hoping.

He's got the charisma of a wet lettuce. Starmer is actually good at public speaking as well regardless of his policies.

Debates are such bollocks.

Set out some decent policies, I couldn't give a gooseberry fool that you can come up with a "witty" insult while waffling on about how you're listening to the public.

Seems hard to imagine now, but worth remembering one of the main reasons Sunak's career rocketed upwards was because he performed very well in the TV debates leading up to the 2019 election.

Like I say... hard to imagine it now  but perhaps he feels he can return to strength in that format.

When you're so far behind in the polls you need as much going on as possible in the hope that something happens. It's a Hail Mary basically.

Equally when you're miles ahead you don't need debates at all. Like Johnson in 2019.

It's all relative to the opposition.

I can't remember exactly how it went last time, but I imagine all he had to do was tap into DA WILL OF DA PEEPLE and talk shite about Brexit unicorns.

Lettuces are not popular in certain parts of the Tory party.

I'm pretty sure Sunak didn't take part in the debates back then though, as at the time, he was only Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Savid Javid was chancellor at the time.

Rishi only came to prominence when he took over as chancellor just as the pandemic was getting underway.

I'm not sure he made a very big impact on anyone in 2019.

The first ever mention on this forum of him was 7 November 2019. And that was just because KK posted a long article that happened to have a quote from him.

Then nothing until 29 November when a couple of forumites called him a disgrace for opposing immigration.

After that, it wasn't until 17 March 2020 until he was named again. Which was a month after he became Chancellor.

So if he did make a big impact on the UK before the pandemic, nobody here noticed or gave a gooseberry fool.

I have no memory of Rishi Sunak taking part in a leader's debate in November 2019 but apparently he did:

How odd that on this fine bastion of sycophancy we did not queue up to extol the magnificence of a Tory MP  I am stunned!

I do like the idea of "career rocketing upwards" being interpreted as 'talked about on GRcade' rather than 'being promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer'.

My point is that I'm pretty sure we'd have mentioned him if he was storming the debates and looking like a star politician of the future.

My memory is that when he became Chancellor most people just thought "who?" and figured Johnson had just shoved a nobody into the position so he could keep control.

But, sure, you remember him performing well in 2019 debates. Good for you.

What TV debates was Sunak involved in, in 2019? He'd have been a backbencher, was he really getting lots of airtime?

The only recollection I have of early days Sunak was that someone in the exchequer seemed to take great delight in putting him in photos with very tall colleagues.

"Hey, look at that currently unknown dude ripping it up for the Tories on live television!!"

I'll keep that on my clipboard so I can post it before anyone else does, next time the star politician of the future pops up. Wish me luck.
