Prague - suggestions on what to see and do

Hi, I'm off to Prague on Friday for the NHL Global Series game between the Flyers and the Blackhawks. I've got a few hours spare in the afternoon and maybe a couple of hours on the Saturday morning before flying back. Never been before so what are the best things to see in such a short space of time?

The astronomical clock in the old town square is said to be well worth seeing.

Oooh, me and the wife came back 4 days ago. Here is a list of things we enjoyed -

Astronomical Clock (busy)
Charles Bridge (busy but not horribly so surprisingly)
Communism Museum
Boat Tour (50 mins, about 10 quid)
Eat a Chimney Cake
Powder Tower (really nice view from the top, only takes about 20 minutes all in. About £4)
Lennon Wall (if you lie graffiti art i guess)
Museum of Steel figures (cool collection of welded car replicas, marvel heroes, star wars crap etc)

I was about the suggest the opposite :lol:

I found it pretty...pointless. Just a square full of Americans on segways.

I've not been for a while, but it's a very pretty place though, so just walking around is nice. Charles Bridge towards the castle is rather picturesque too.

I can recommend this bar: Pivovarský klub. Big selection of beers. Or maybe try the Pilsner Urquell bars for a fresh tank beer.

It's stunning to look at, but by God, the crowds are awful. It has a little display on the hour (quarter hour?) with clockwork statues and chimes and whatnot, but it's really not worth wading through the heaving masses. Grab yourself a Trdelnik and ice cream, and have a wander round when the crowds have dispersed.

Charles Bridge is a must. Very busy as Kaz said, but much more spread out. Some lovely photo ops, too.

The cathedral atop the hill is gorgeous, but the climb up is pretty grim. I'd avoid if you're on a tight schedule.

Most importantly: goulash. :datass:

Yeah, having not been myself, i don't know the finer details of the city, though i'd still likely go see the clock even despite the crowds

The Goulash is great.

I happened to be near the clock about 10 minutes before the hour, so hung around for it. Its kinda cool to see but those crowds are a bit much.

And i strongly recommend grabbing a pint of Pilsner Urquell if you like a beer. Its quite cheap (about £2.80), although its about 50% head no matter where you purchase it from.

I thought the clock got voted the most disappointing tourist attraction in Europe at one point. Thought it was alright, nothing special.

Best part is, I didn't have a single bad one the whole time I was there, and they were all dirt cheap. We often ate for less than £15 for the pair of us.

So long as you avoid places close to the main town square that advertise 'Traditional Czech' food, you're pretty much golden.

The streets in Prague are bloody gorgeous at night time. They literally shine. Charles Bridge is lovely and there is the biggest nightclub in Europe (I think) at one end of it. There is also the Franz Kafka museum somewhere in the old town I think.

Go to Charles Bridge before 7am, otherwise it is mobbed by selfie stick waving hordes. Visit Zizkov region and check out the TV tower, like something out of half-life 2. Also its a lot quieter there. Other things, kenetic kafka sculpture. Other stuff.

Oh, its also beautiful and peaceful up by the observatory. There is a lovely cafe place 3/4 of the way up the very steep climb. Alternatively there is a cable car type thing available if you dont fancy the exercise.

Kafka museum is on the other side of the river from the old town. It's on the river bank just down from the castle. There is a tradition Czech pub just across the road from it that is super cheap. There is also an interesting kenetic statue of two guys having a piss.

Yes! I remember now. That was a lovely little pub.

clock is rubbish/charles bridge is a bridge
hill with tower and observatory is good. take the cable car up though - its steep!
the castle complex on another hill is great, you can get a tram up to it.

Definitely recommend going to the castle. A boat trip is worth it too if the weather is nice.

Didn’t see much wonderful stuff that I remember (cycled through and got pissed with Banjo first time, then went to a gig with banjo second time) but Uber’s are cheap as strawberry float to get about. They also have electric scooters which are fun but shite on cobbles. It was nowhere near as cheap this year too. strawberry floating brexit.

The zoo. The zoo is bloody massive and is voted one of the world's best (consistently top 5, I do believe). Had a bunch of animals I'd never seen before and comfortably filled most of a day.

Love a good zoo, we do, and this is probably the best one we've been to. Worth it for the shoebills alone.
