I've played through the demo, and honestly I think you're exactly right. I chose Tressa the merchant to start with, and then went and recruited Olberic and Primrose (who I'd already played the start of both in the initial demo). Even though equal weighting is given to the story, I already feel attached to Tressa as the "lead" protagonist in my game.

I was going to replay the demo to try out the others, but now I'm not sure I want to as I want to go into the main game carrying on with the story I've started. I reckon the structure will lead to some nice personal experiences of the game.

How does it work for recruiting the other travellers? You were able to go pick up Primrose or Olberic in the first demo, but considering that was from a quite clearly unfinished version of the game, there was little pomp or circumstance to picking them up. Is it more involved in this second demo?

In the first demo you played through them entirely separately right? Now it's like the full game - as you play as one character, you can wander into another town and meet the recruitable character there as an NPC. When you talk to them the game gives you the option of playing the start of their story ("hearing their tale from the beginning"), or immediately having them jump into your party for the conclusion of their opening chapter. You're then locked in to completing that opening chapter before moving on.

So in the first demo for example, when you start as Olberic you play from waking up through to the kid getting kidnapped. Then you have to go off and fight the bandits. It's straight after the kidnapping that you wander into as another character, so you get the choice of playing through that opening as Olberic or immediately just having him join your existing party and going to fight the bandits.

I hope that made sense

Yeah, perfect sense!

I guess I'll check out the six intros I've not played and settle on one to take across to the main game. I'm a big fan of the trend over the last couple of years that Nintendo have exhibited where you can transfer progress across to the main game - makes me much more likely to check out demos they release!

Can't you recruit all the other 7 characters in a single game then?

I've played a bit of the demo and so far it's not really grabbing me, I certainly can't see where the budget has gone to justify a £50 asking price.
The voice acting started out really good, but then quickly devolved into nothing but generic soundbites. At that kind of price I expect it to be fully voiced really.

Enjoyed the initial demo as both Primrose and (?) Olberic.

Downloaded the second demo and started to play as the Hunter Hati. Game looks beauts and sounds lush but the overly-affected Ye Olde English They Hatheth Choseneth For The Hunters Languageth Styleth is borderline insufferable, even though the actual dialogue delivery and acting is good.

I hope it's just the one town/people!

I'm a fan of old text-based RPGs, I must admit! Hearing that it's text boxes only for the most part is a plus for me. (Not that 'THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME' isn't still the greatest RPG meme there is, but...)

For the most part I'm tentative about this game, because I don't yet know how much repetition will be involved in playing through all 8 characters. I'll still give it a shot, natch, in the absence of Bravely Third.

You don't play through the game 8 times, you play the game once and go through all the character's stories in whatever order you like.

Dying for the god-tier JRPG goodness on Friday. Still haven't decided which character to start with though. :x Captain Toad will have to join my backlog, along with Shining Resonance Refrain, which is due tomorrow. Expensive week. I really hoped SRR would drop a bit more, but at least Toad was under £27.

Is the JRPG Octopath? I started the demo but it was really really really slow going, so I haven't gone back to it yet. Is it actually good, then? :shifty:

Yes, it is Octopath and yes, it's shaping up to be quite special. I'll try to source some impressions tonight but it looks like it'll be quite a critical hit. I'm really excited about its release but I've barely got the time to plug away at Xenoblade so I won't buy it at launch only to leave it neglected.

Yeah, Octopath Travelers. I guess we won't know just how good it'll be until it releases or reviews drop, but the signs are certainly looking promising. Lots of people saw Bravely Default as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy V (particularly the job system), Octopath is looking like it might be Final Fantasy VI's spiritual successor, from the visual style to system mechanics. One of the devs literally suggested as much recently, which seems to have elevated expectations and hype. I adored the demo, personally. I didn't play the second one because I'm saving the start of the game for when it arrives.

It does look amazing and I'm looking forward to diving into it after Xenoblade 2. I skipped the second demo due to a lack of time and because I'd rather save the opening three hours for the final release so that I can continue playing.

I only played Primrose's (the dancer) story in the first demo and I really enjoyed it but I'm tempted to start with someone else to mix it up.

I'll probably see which characters backstory takes my fancy (I'm guessing there'll be a slight summary of their backstory when you're choosing your character?) and go from there, in the end you'll get to experience all of their stories anyway so not missing out in that sense.

I haveth playedeth the second demo and foundeth the dialog not a little irritating.

Also, random encounters in 2018. Verily?

Coloureth me disappointed.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

If it helps, that dialogue style isn't everywhere, just in certain places/with certain characters.

Random encounters are to be expected, it's a deliberately throw-back RPG. I imagine it won't be the only deliberately un-modern design choice the game makes.

I really want to get this but just have too many games on the go at the moment so it will have to wait!

Loved the first demo but have held off playing the second as I want to maintain the surprise and be able to power on with it all in one go once I do get it.

Poor excuse!

To be honest I'm in a similar situation, not a great deal of games to be getting on with (3 or 5 if I count games I'm slowly replaying) but certainly enough to keep me entertained without buying Octopath. Octopath just looks fantastic though

I've not actually seen any reviews yet? Has the embargo lifted or are they just not being posted all over the place?

They're out there, Robbo; and predominantly have very good stories to tell.

All sounds very good! Just looked to see if GameXplain had a review and indeed they did so I've just watched that, will read some of those reviews as well.
