Project Origin now called F.E.A.R 2

The true sequel to F.E.A.R, Project Origin, has been renamed F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin after Monolith Productions purchased the F.E.A.R licence from Activision Blizzard.

Monolith actually created the F.E.A.R franchise, but had been developing the sequel under the name Project Origin, following a split with Vivendi - who held on to the F.E.A.R name. But not any more:

"Monolith Productions Inc. and WB Games Inc. are pleased to announce that we have purchased the F.E.A.R. name from Activision/Blizzard," the developer has announced.

"Monolith Productions, the creators of F.E.A.R., have been developing the true sequel to F.E.A.R. over the last two years under the community selected title, 'Project Origin.' With the name being returned home, the game will now be titled F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin."

So all is as it should be.

I'm probably wrong but i thought Vivendi were actually working on a game called Fear 2? Regardless of the name, XBW were very impressed by what they saw of this.

Thank God for that. Project Origin was a hilariously gooseberry fool genero-name. Whoever judged that competition was a loon.

They announced they were, but they didn't have anything other than the name. None of the IP, none of the story rights.

Whoever was developing "FEAR 2" was pretty much coming up with an entirely new game from scratch, and Monolith were presumably preparing sharpened lawyers incase the game infringed on the original game in any way.

This is ultimately probably the best case scenario for all parties. Monolith get their title, title owners get paid.

It's good news this has been sorted, but FEAR 2 sounds a bit dull.
Perhaps FEAR: Origin (if it ties into the story) would tie the two together.

So do I get a prize? In there name a game competition I suggested Fear 2!

I love the Lithtec engine and the way they look even over the previous incarnations. I wonder how they've modified the latest engine for improvements.

Good to see they got the license back, does it say how much they paid for it?

There's some proper genero-shite names and slogans floating around these days.

I can't remember what it was, but the Babylon A.D. (Vin Diesel film) slogan was the most generic and unoriginal thing i've ever heard.

Anyway, it's looking great. Hopefully they'll be able to improve on the atmosphere from the first game and actually make this one a little scary.
