I believe the saturn/playstation/n64 and even the sega dreamcast to be retro now and thats where my fondest gaming memories lie.

Yes i had a sega megadrive and amiga 500 before it, but they did not give such great memories, gaming only, for me, went big when the sega saturn/ playstation came around, just when 3D gaming came about.

I remeber owning nigel mansell racing on the amiga and have fond memories of playing a game called 'kid gloves'.

I'd say the 80's were probably my favourite period too. Yes, the games were crap, but, we didn't know any better then.

At least they were cheap, and very so often you'd come across a gem which made all the dross worthwhile. For me at least, there was real excitement when an arcade game came into the home. As the arcades back then were way more powerful than our crappy home computers. Back then, they were special. You'd go in, put your 50p into Outrun and be in awe of the astonishing graphics and dream that one day you'd be able to have games which looked as good as that in the home.

Also, developers back then were more original. They'd take a chance on more abstact concepts. Games like The Sentinel, Elite, Driller, Paradroid, et al.

Now it's become a multi million pound industry, and whilst the games are better, they're also soulless.

Moostone/Speedball 2/Pang/IK+/CannonFodder/Desert Strike are what retro is all about, some of the first games I ever played and would go back to anyday.

Did anyone play 'How To Be A Complete B******'? That used to crack me up but the gameplay was a bit dodgey.

Yeah, I had that on Spectrum. Totally awful, but strangely funny at the same time.
