PostPS3 and Vita stores get stay of execution! PSP still doomed (pg3)

The PS3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores aren’t long for this world. According to a source familiar with the situation (verified by TheGamer), the stores are due to be closed down from July. The announcement is planned for the end of this month.

PSP’s and PS3’s stores are to be closed on July 2, while the PS Vita store will stay open until August 27. After those dates, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for any of the Sony consoles mentioned above.

Oh gooseberry fool. Need to get my Vita library backed up to PS3.

Oh, man. I hate how companies can just turn off your supply to purchases like this. Sony make millions from PS Plus fees; is it really so expensive to keep the access going?

I'm gonna have to start downloading all my PS3 digital titles to my second PS3, just to have a back-up copy in case (or, rather, when) the main console breaks at some point.

At times like this, it does make you think that you've gotta be pretty crazy to buy console games digitally.

If there is any media you love enough, always have a physical copy of it.

Unfortunately it's not always the media that's the problem, it's the hardware to play it. Those OLED Vita's aren't going to go the distance.

To be fair, it only says that you won’t be able to purchase. Though I’m expecting the worst, I hope they maintain access to download owned content.

I still always buy physical copies of music and films whenever possible.

My PSP(s) have long since given up the ghost, both have suffered from battery 'bloat' although I suspect one of them would still function if plugged into the mains via AC adapter.

Digital future everybody!

This is why I hope that moving forward all games will be forward compatible so that you always can access them on the newer machines.

I’ll have to load up my PS3 and Vita and make sure I get everything downloaded

Vita is my only digital console, I went back to physical for Switch. Think I have everything backed up on my laptop but I'll have to check.

I forgot you can backup to PC. I’ll get that done too - better than relying on the PS3.

I'd thought that I had my second PS3 in a cupboard... but, no, it must be in the loft :o . Gonna have to go search it out and start downloading.

If the "no more access to your PS3 digital downloads" rumour turns out to be true, it'll be another big push in my mind to move away from console gaming.

Sorry, I was thinking specifically of Vita, which you can back up to PS3 or PC. While it was convenient to use the PS3 as a Vita backup when it was regularly active, I don’t want to trust it long-term.

Ah! No worries, just thought I may be missing a trick. Will dig out my PS3 tomorrow and kick off a marathon download session. Probably gonna take a few days; the PS3 wasn't the fastest at downloading, IIRC.

Edit: I'm *assuming* that Sony will still enable the "sign in online to play on your second console" functionality? ... :o :dread: .

You should still be able to access your library. It’s just a case of you can’t buy anything beyond them but still download games you already own. They’d get sued to gooseberry fool if that wasn’t the case. My Vita and PSP have decent sized memory cards in them which are chocker full abs both use CFW anyway so can always “access” games that way..

I have like £400 worth of Vita games on my wishlist, most of which never go on sale. Oh well, I'll be sure to finally pick them up if they actually do over the coming months.

This is a very Sony thing to do. Hopefully one day they'll pay more than just lip-service (see Astro's Playroom) to their gaming history.

Remember, folks: once the servers go down, it's your moral obligation to pirate everything you can in the name of preservation.

I’m considering upgrading from a 80gb fat to a 500gb slim just so I can raid the store one last time but it depends entirely on how they handle accessing back catalogues as right now it’s hard to do that without going in the store and searching for stuff.

Sony shutting it all down puts Microsoft’s digital services in a new light. Thanks to the commitment to backwards compatibility I can see the 360 store remaining up for a much longer time.

It’s all giving a similar dread to when Nintendo closed the Wii shopping channel. I missed the boat on that one sadly.

If Sony kill access to redownload or even play what you have then that’ll be a disaster. It’d hard push me into just emulating the PS1 and PS2 games instead of buying the classics ports.
