PostPS3 YLOD, help please.
by Rapidly-Greying » Fri Jan 23, 2009 1:25 am

I have been reading that a decent percentage of 1st wave 60gb ps3's suffer from this yellow light problem. I bought my 60gb model 2nd hand from Game last june and i dont know which version it is. Anybody any idea how to find out? Also , any ideas how much Sony charge to fix out of warranty machines ? And a Sony repair number so i can store the number away.

My ps3 is fine, but im all in a fluster that it could go all gazza on me. I couldn't bear losing all my saved hole in ones and albatrosses.

Never heard of this problem before, but as long as it's still working there's no point worrying about it.

I was a 60GB victim, and going to collect a *60GB* PS3 today so I'll let you know the cost. America have to pay $150 straight away whereas we don't. I would advise performing a weekly backup as 60GB's are dropping it like it's hot.

Talk to Game - you get a year's warranty on pre-owned hardware - see if they can sort you out a replacement.

Also there's a back up tool in the "System Settings" menu part of the XMB. Got an external HDD? Hook it up and back-up.

Back up your saved games to memory stick.

Don't worry PS3 60gb is still very reliable.

It's a sad state of affairs when we're too worried about whether our consoles are going to break to even turn them on.

Performing a weekly backup sounds like a bit of a chore...

If it worries you so much then why not consider upgrading your HD to 250-320 GB? It's relatively cheap and pretty easy to do.

Then if your PS3 goes tits-up (my launch PS3 is still working fine BTW) you just send it back with the now redundant 60 gig drive.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

You don't have to back it up - Just copy saved games to memory stick. That is quicker.

I can get my Master System out of my loft and it still works, how many consoles of this gen will still work in 15-20 years time

Not very many if any at all.

Some saves may be copy protected though.

Exactly. They don't make them like they used to.

I got a second hand NES when I was 6 (I'm 22 now) and it still works.

Too many moving parts in the damn things nowadays.
Pre PS1 I never heard of one console going wrong unless it had been thrown across the room
My 60GB is a launch PS3 and it's never given me a day's trouble so I think you're worrying about nothing.

Do you not get the blinking screen problem? I know it is an issue on some NES's, but it is easily sorted simply by cleaning the contacts in the cartridge slot.

That doesn't mean you wont get a flashing red light the next time you turn it on, modern as they all are - this current gen of consoles doesn't give you a warning on when they're going to brick it.
