PostPS4 SKU differences
by That's not a growth » Tue Nov 20, 2018 9:10 am

I'm considering getting a PS4 Pro if they go on sale for a decent price during black Friday. I've heard the one in the recent Red Dead 2 bundle is slightly changed, and it's fan is much quieter. Is this the case? Are there any other differences I should be aware of between early Pros and recent?

Also, is a pro worth it at 1080p? Is the frame rate smoother than on the regular PS4?

Article about it here:

Two years on from its initial launch and PlayStation 4 Pro has been quietly tweaked once again, with new hardware that sees Sony revisiting the super-charged console with a new design that improves once again on the machine's perennial noise problem. The work pays off because this is quietest, most discreet Pro yet, completely banishing the 'jet engine' effect commonly associated with launch models.

I have a Pro connected to a 1080p (24" :datass: ) screen, TNAG, and it is nice to have the powered-up model. Recent games do make more use of the extra tech oomph in terms of frame-rate and smoother edges and more detailed shadow rendering... albeit this work is often done "behind the scenes" without any reference to this in menu options or on the back of the game box.

Little extras include having an additional USB slot on the back of the machine so that you can connect an external hard drive there rather than having it connected to the front of the machine on the standard model; and the capability to stream at 1080p rather than 720p direct from the console.

I really enjoy using the Pro although I would personally regard the benefits to 1080p screen users as being "nice extras" rather than "essential"; a bit of extra polish to add to the shine.

Any solution for those of us who already have the scale model of Terminal 2 in our living room? :dread:

Get the newest one if you can.

It's probably possible but you'd have to open up your PS4 and mimic whatever they've done with the new one. At a guess they've changed the heat sink and the internal layout of the cooling system. The case itself will have changed shape internally as well to mitigate the fan whine.

It would be interesting to see if a quieter fan does anything to improve the noise but I think it's generated more from the way the air goes through the case than it is from the fan itself.

Just buy a mini fridge and whack the PS4 inside. That should keep it cool and being in the fridge will muffle the sound.

I can't think of a single reason why that's a bad idea.

Alternatively, if you need to flash-defrost your freezer just stick your PS4 in there and fire up Doom, God of War or Red Dead Redemption 2.

You would have nowhere to put the loo roll.

Exactly, with loo roll and the ketchup already in the fridge, how can you fit a PS4 as well?

Has anyone heard of this site before? Just came up during a search:

https://game-markt.com/playstation-4/17 ... 61310.html

Edit: oh, looks like they're based in the US. Yeah, nah.

The bread doesn’t fit in there as LewisD filled it up with McDonald’s cheeseburgers.
