Sony have basically allowed MS to run away with the hype.

Yeah, this isn’t for mass market consumption.

He’s talking about Backward compatibility now though.

It's good to know that they couldn't strip it out to save costs down the road.

Whether this was designed as a GDC dev focussed talk or not the reality is (and it's a reality that Sony should have been well aware of) that they have millions of people who have been clamouring for details about the PS5 for months - whatever they put out was going to be the focus of attention and needed to cater for people properly. Saying "but it's a dev talk!" is technically accurate but is essentially a moot point.

Should be considerably cheaper than the Xbox, then.

So have I missed anything amazing? Or from an impartial perspective are Xbox slightly leading the way pre launch.

I dipped out after 15 minutes. My hardcore credentials crumbled to dust under such an aggressive use of boring technical terms used in quick succession.

Someone throw a custard pie for gods sake.

I didn't hear them say that.

It seems that the PS4 is natively backwards compatible because the hardware includes the same functions that PS4/Pro does.

It doesn't rule out PS1/2/3 emulation.

True but Sony have pretty good form in terms of unless they explicitly say something is there then it's really not there.

PS4 technically has emulation for a handful of older titles that they are happy to resell you, but that's really crap in comparison to what MS have been and will continue to be offering on the XSX.

Bottom line - PS5 is slower except when it's faster and the Xbox is much the same.

Simples.

Is the disc drive going to be compatible with CDs again though?

Maybe they expect us to buy all the games again...

I got called away at the end, so I'm guessing he didn't mention that they could improve old games. In theory one can speculate that this will be for a reveal for a later date with PS1, PS2 and PS3 support but in reality if they had that now they would reveal it.
