I was mostly following this through twitter but now that I've actually caught up with the stream, I don't even that it was that bad. We're getting insight that we usually don't get which I appreciate. There's still plenty of time till release for them to elaborate on the games. The section on 3D audio got me hyped because it's an area in games that's largely been untouched over the last couple of generations. Sound design is about to be on a whole new level. Also had questions answered about the potential of a faster SSD. Giving more creative freedom for devs is a good thing.

Very skeptical about the input output storage speed claims. Plain numbers is one thing but it's whether it makes a discernable difference that counts - PC nvme drives have speeds up to 16gbps but it makes strawberry float all difference to actual load times.

Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well. We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.

Clears up the confusion.

So less than 100 payable at launch. :dread:

For once I agree with Schreier.

PlayStation will, going by current gen, have better exclusives. But XSeX will have better looking backwards compatible games and better looking current-gen third party games. A big part of the initial PS4 sales success was not just that it was the cheapest, but that it was the most powerful games console. So if Cyberpunk 2077 or Elder Scrolls VI or Call of Duty next looks noticeably better on one console than the other it is going to make a difference to a lot of people who just want the best version of the game.

However it is interesting to hear John Linneman's view as he has that ultra-geek insight into hardware that I respect.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently the reason I’ll be buying one of these consoles so it looking better could be a part deciding factor in which one to opt for. Still the games on offer would trump a slightly better looking version of a few games. Hopefully both Sony and Microsoft go all out showing off their games in their digital events around the time of the now cancelled E3.

Having a reveal like this and not showing the console is a really odd choice.
The final design must be finished by now as they'll be manufacturing it soon. I can't really think of a good reason for them not to show it.

Indeed. Your early adapters are your hardcore fans. They went with the PS4 last generation but unless Sony have some real killer apps at launch, you can see the Xbox starting strongly.

I'm interested in Backwards Comparability cause strawberry float another hundreds ports that people will likely wank over.

I mean, this drive, the way they’re pitching it sounds like it’s engineered to not be “so fast it loads instantly”, but rather “no loading ever” and that devs can just *assume* any asset they need is there to be used.

Of course, that won’t actually be the case, even if any reasonable amount of assets can get all the way from storage to raster in less than a frame, eliminating any waiting about *entirely* is impossible for anything that needs to be online, or anything procedurally generated. But in the real world, I would think that barely any multi platform games are going to be doing it anyway because why bother when it still just functions perfectly fine as a “fast hard drive”, like you already support on the other platforms.

It’s telling that he mentioned how it would be great to see this approach used in future PC architecture. Reminiscent of their CELL processor, which proved ruinous. It’s not *as* big a gamble as that, but they’re staking their market leader status on it. Hopefully for Sony, AAA games loading like old SNES carts is enough of a “wow” factor that the approach sees widespread adoption. But if it turns out the average consumer just doesn’t give a gooseberry fool, Sony will be left in the dust.

I'm not too fussed about specs. My PC is right there for that. What interests me are the games and Sony is going to let me play FFVII sooner, so that's good enough for me.

None of his graphs and other bollocks will be remembered by anyone if it comes out £100 cheaper, I’ll say that much.
Everyone here is rubbing their hands with glee about the power, but how many of you even play in 4K, or are going to imminently?

I might be one of the minority people that who doesn't bothered about the backwards compatibility and what I want is new exclusively games on the console. Also, that speed of SSD is insane.

So, PS5 will be mine.

You're not. I don't buy a new console to play old games on. The PS4 has had (by a massive margin) the lions share of exclusive games that I wanted to play. I expect them to deliver again. If the multiplatform games look a little prettier on xbox. I couldn't care less. They have this gen as well. The difference will be small.
The difference in quality is what microsoft needs to address.

It’s a bit crap though if you buy Doom Eternal on Friday knowing it probably won’t work on a PS5 but if you buy it for Xbox you know it will work for Series X, possibly enhanced too.
