If I buy it it'll be for my PS4. I'm not buying a PS5 to play slightly enhanced PS4 games on.

This needs to be clarified as i have read the ‘top 100 games’ mentioned are ones that can be enhanced. It is possible that all games will work. I’m more worried about the fact that most of my games are digital, so can i simply plug in my hdd like you can on the series x?

There’s simply too many franchises exclusive to playstation i love like gran turismo, god of war and uncharted so i will have to get one. I am seriously thinking of getting a series x for multiplatform titles as I don’t want to play a blurry version of the next gta. Reminds me of the ps3 vs xbox 360 situation.

Actually, reading a little more into this storage solution, the devs don’t actually need to do anything to utilise it, the hardware does it all automatically. So rather, for PS5 games they can just *remove* whatever they have in there to handle asset management and let the hardware do its thing.

It’s not *really* about “no loading for the end user”, it’s about making the machine the easiest to develop for, by removing a painful part of the workflow that devs have to do on every other platform.

So it's not Cerny's Cell? Well that's something.

It's going to be a hard sell that's for sure.

Only if its the ps5 is the same price as the series x. I suspect the series x will go in at £450 and theres no way the ps5 will be less than this due to the cost of the cooling solution and ssd.

I might be one of the minority people that who doesn't bothered about the backwards compatibility and what I want is new exclusively games on the console. Also, that speed of SSD is insane.

So, PS5 will be mine.

You're not. I don't buy a new console to play old games on. The PS4 has had (by a massive margin) the lions share of exclusive games that I wanted to play. I expect them to deliver again. If the multiplatform games look a little prettier on xbox. I couldn't care less. They have this gen as well. The difference will be small.
The difference in quality is what microsoft needs to address.

Ultimately, this is my position too. In terms of exclusives there's really no comparision this generation. And for next gen, Specs don't really interest me (because I don't really understand them mainly...) but the graphics in games are so good now, an edge on multiplatform doesn't bother me. Full BC would be convenient, but I still have a PS4 at the end of the day.

I'm definitely not ruling out the Xbox though. Microsoft have done a lot of work on studio acquisition so I'm interested to see how that translates into first party titles. Especially as by the time the generation launches I'll be a father with less time for gaming, so the value and convenience of GamePass will be very attractive.

Oh yeah, that was more just an attempt at a cell/sell joke than anything. ;)

I think they are going to be very similar in terms of price (high) and for the most part performance will be in a similar ballpark as well. If one or the other can give a compelling case for their machine doing something which is clearly "better" than the other then they will get the edge - whether that's loading, scale of environments, graphics, framerate, integration - just something that grabs attention basically.

So, now we have the tech info and can compare the two next gen offerings has anyone changed which machine they're likely to get?

I was always going to get both as I've been saving for that for a while now so I'm happy that they seem to be at least slightly different from each other. Both options seem to have positive aspects.

Depends on the games, but as I was planning to sell my PS4 Pro (though I do still have the 20th Anniversary Edition PS4 packaged away) and Xbox One X, I'm now leaning towards Xbox as I don't want to temporarily lose access to my PS4 games. My soundbar only has 2 HDMI with 4K passthrough, and I've only room for 2 consoles under my TV anyway.

At the moment (if what we think we know about PS5 BC stands), a PS4 Pro and Xbox Series X works far better for me at launch in terms of retaining access to everything compared to a PS5 and Xbox One X. There's loads of games I haven't finished yet on PS4. When Microsoft has this seamless (hopefully) ecosystem, it's ridiculous that my library of PS4 games potentially won't work. All the games this year - Two Point Hospital, Doom, Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VII, Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk, Watch Dogs Legion, The Last of Us Part II - are you telling me there's a chance these games won't work on PS5 or be upgraded as standard? Sony need to realise it's not 2013 any more. And because things have shifted more to digital libraries, I think more people expect them to be accessible at all times, rather than exist in the vacuum of 1 machine like they did on PS3 to PS4.

Sony understood the value of BC on PS2 and the first year or so of PS3, got away with it missing on PS4, but now Microsoft has brought it back (though let's not forget, MS didn't care for BC at all during the 360 era, or the start of the Xbox One's life), Sony could really be on the back foot here.

Good collection of reactions from game devs, the people this video was actually aimed at https://www.resetera.com/threads/devs-r ... on.175980/

I think you're spot-on, Mafro, although Sony didn't exactly position it like that. It was pretty cool insight but, man, forty-five minutes of that was just too much as a "hey, this is our new console!" presentation.

The tech is looking great (although I do harbour reservations about the relative paucity of storage space compared to current consoles) but I wish both MS and Sony were putting games front-and-centre rather than tech specs. It kinda feels way too PC-ish... and I'm not digging at PC enthusiasts by saying this; but it's not really what consoles should be about. IMHO.

Surely it would have been smarter just having behind closed doors or private video feeds to actual developers? This is a real mess.

What a load of old cobblers, felt more like an investors meeting that anything else.
All these terraflops and that sound great but it means nothing if there's no games for it, I wasn't expecting to see some new games, but at least a glimps of the console.
