The backwards compatibility stuff may be something of a case of things being lost in translation, it probably is the case that they've only tested certain games but in reality the feature should allow most/all games to run.

Either way though it's just a massive open goal for Microsoft from a marketing perspective - they can do their equivalent of the Sony "here's how you share games on PS" type video but re-framed for backwards compatibility.

Looking at the actual transcript of what Mark Cerny said, I think TechRadar (and probably others) may have misunderstood what he said:

"Running PS4 and PS4 titles at Boosted frequencies has also added complexity. The Boost is truly massive this time around and some game code just can't handle it. Testing has to be done on a title by title basis. Results are excellent though. We recently took a look at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles as ranked by playtime and we're expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on the PlayStation 5."

He was talking about these PS4 titles running in a 'boost mode', which is presumably their Xbox Series X equivalent of a performance upgrade.

I think this should've been a State of Play where everything was shown off a little more user friendly. I personally don't mind it but I know you're losing a lot of ears if you start going straight into the deep end of things >,>

Boosted frequencies were brought in so they didn’t go in with 9tf. If the console is more than £350 I can see microsoft really taking their market share, because the series x will be £450 or less.

This is a combination of sony not being ambitious enough and microsoft really going all out.

The faster ssd is nice, but if fifa is running at 4k on series x with full ray tracing and 1400p with no ray tracing on ps5, then i want a series x in all honesty. I’m not sure if its this corona virus news that is making me think another way but i need to feel it all before i go.

surprised how negative some of the comments are here. Yes I don't think his presentation style is great but overall this is what was rumoured. The PS5 is slightly less powerful than the xbox series x but it's pretty close and most people won't care too much outside of gaming forums. The launch games will be big decider and it will be interesting to see if Sony can close the gap to MS on the console OS front. Finally there is still the prices to be announced but I guess MS will just take a loss to match Sony if they must as lets face it they have absolutely tons of cash in the bank.

Its 20% more powerful and doesn’t require the gpu to be boosted. The gap is too large imo. Only thing that can save the ps5 is bringing out a ps5 pro at launch. The console will overheat like mad from how high they want to clock it unless they have an amazing cooling solution.

It doesn't strawberry floating matter if the console is much more powerful than its rival. Isn't the X Box One's pro model much more powerful than the PS4 Pro?

The games matter. I'm hardly going to buy the new X Box if it's all just about Halo, Gears of War, Forza etc. Their first party output is pretty shite this gen and they need to convince me otherwise next gen.

I'm sure that the PS5 would guarantee games that I would be interested in unless Sony strawberry floated it all up on that front.

Yes, sony have the games, but what concerns me are multi platform games and how different they will look. Let’s see.

I think Sony's now going to have to clarify the PS4 backwards compatibility situation, because its ambiguity is clearly confusing a lot of people already, which is the first sign of a PR failure as you never want to be sending out such confused messaging. One scenario is fine (all games work, with around 100 'boosted' at launch), whereas the other is a complete cock up (only 100 PS4 games work at launch).

Sony would have to majorly mess up if they don’t still have the edge on first party output, or Microsoft would need to take a huge jump in first party output to match Sony’s PS4 output. I quite like Forza but I’m quite impartial on the majority of it so carrying on from this gen Sony do have the edge on that front.

Microsoft have been quite busy buying up studios over the past couple of years, to boost the first-party support. I'm looking forward to seeing the fruits of that labour.

At first glance the XSX clearly has an edge... but I'm surprised by the variation in the Input/Output throughput speed. The PS5 is significantly faster and I'm wondering if this could - with some smart coding - be utilised to make up some of that tech loss.

Having had time to think, I feel a little blasé about both systems at present. The tech sounds interesting but, until we see the final products, the costs and - perhaps most importantly- the games, I'm won't be overly excited. Of course, there were rumours that Microsoft will launch with two models of the console... perhaps they'll aim to win on "power" with the higher model and price with the lower model?

As others have said, it really is all about the games. I'll be going for both the PS5 and Series X, it's only March and since starting saving in my next gen tin back in January I actually now have over £330 so should be fine come release date for both.

Hmm...

I might be one of the minority people that who doesn't bothered about the backwards compatibility and what I want is new exclusively games on the console. Also, that speed of SSD is insane.

So, PS5 will be mine.
