Controls much better on PC but I'll probably stick to playing on PS5 seeing as I dropped money on that version :fp:

Great that it's on Gamepass! What an unexpected treat! Downloaded it and played through the first couple of levels - it still holds up really well.

It does remind me of playing the original, and initially I was wondering what they'd done to it by way of a remaster.

But as has been pointed out, the fact that it reminds me of the original so much and that I also think it still holds up really well (when most older shooters play and look rubbish), suggests that's why a really good remaster.

Really enjoying this on the PS5. Had to wack up the sensitivity as default too slow with the camera and remap the run and weapon select buttons. Also turned off the graphics smoothing as didn't look right with this on. Haven't played this since the original PC release and this re-master is long overdue

Strange weekend! Played and loving the Quake remaster absolutely fantastic! Played the Diablo 2 remaster and it's aged badly and watched a new episode of Changing Rooms on the telly. What strawberry floating year is this again?

Started the first expansion pack tonight and it's just so good. So action packed and non stop combat compared to the main game.

Just had all my data wiped because of a bug.

Quick saved and an error message popped up about there being "too many files". Now all my save data is corrupted and I can't even change the settings without getting the same error.

It's completely strawberry floated.

Going to have to try deleting the game completely and redownloading it and hopefully that'll fix it.

I'm just really annoyed because I was a good chunk through the expansion levels and I don't want to start all over again if there's a chance I could be hit with the same bug.

Oh man that's frustrating!

I've been really enjoying this, blasted the main game for the nostalgia and am about halfway through the new expansion. I think I prefer the previous Dimension of the Past levels to the newer expansion in all honesty, but both are a lot of fun!

Do you quick save often? I pretty much save before turning every corner so I'm assuming the glitch came about by reaching some kind of unknown save limit :x

Although I noticed the game updated yesterday so it's possibly a bug brought in by the patch?

I guess I'll move over to Duke Nukem while the pain subsides.

Seems to be a common bug from what I can see but no explanation on what causes it. Not sure if it's only happening on PS5 but it's certainly the most annoying bug I've seen in a long time.

Puts me off playing it in case it happens again.

It runs extremely well and the IPS display can even keep up with the ultra fist gib explosion deatmatches. That's in portable mode. The motion controls on max sensitivity and the acceleration set up for the Switch sticks are ideal too. It's heavily evocative of playing QIII deathmatch on PC.

Really impressed. 100% crossplay quake deathmatch in bed with sensitive and accurate controls, bunny hopping around with a double shotgun or rocket launcher at 2am in bed.

Never would have imagined that. For two pints imo it's wonderful. If you use matchmaking its dedicated servers as well (unfortunately custom matches are P2P but with the speed of fibre connections these days, I don't personally care). I got into a match with 8 players that I think was P2P and it was as fast as any LAN in the 00s.

I've loaded it up on the free Steam upgrade (I owned the original) and obviously KB&M is better, but compare that to what, a strawberry floating GameGear at the time.

I love this so much.

I played through the original four chapters and loved them: moody, punchy, quick and inventive with the limited working parts of Quake.

Then I played the first of the MachineGames expansions: Dimensions of the Past - thought it was great, with some great new aesthetics and ideas.

But now I'm playing Dimensions of the Machine and I think it might be even better still. It's still got that rapid, responsive Quake pugilicious-ness - but now somehow the game is also Ico and Dark Souls? With sun-bleached windmill scenes and sprawling levels that really loop and reconnect in surprising ways? Maybe it's even a bit Metroid Prime, too - with the amount of uneven surfaces and diagonals amidst ruins. I had no idea I wanted this from Quake but now I've got it I love it.

And as I (always say) and said: arms apart Gyro is not the most accurate way I've ever played Quake, but it is the most fun!

Such a bargain.

Thanks for covering the last few bits, interesting how it opens up a bit.

It's a great title for the Switch but interesting to hear there's some innovation in MachineGame's expansions of the original, which I never had a chance to play (although I probably already own it on Steam...)

I need to get back onto it but the glitch really put me off. I salvaged an older save from the cloud so I'll play it again at some point.

Shame game saves from PS4 cannot be transferred over. Another thing Xbox users have advantage with.. The devs should have arranged this facility.

Yeah all the devs should go out of their way to provide a back channel for features that Sony can't be arsed to support at a platform level!

Finished Dimension of the Machine, the new DLC pack made by Machine Gun Games.

It was fantastic. Fantastic.

The way it riffs on the classic, base Quake feel in surprising ways is so entertaining. And despite the variety of new settings (those aforementioned sun-bleached Ico castles, misty-morning cathedrals, star-speckled space horizons and more) the atmosphere is always recognizably, cohesively Quake: moody and cavernous, but now with some great use of more detailed geometry, like spinning fan blades that parse the hearth-light passing through.

But the level design twists really are brilliant; some levels are like What If Quake, But You Keep Digging Down?!

Another might be: What if Quake Cathedrals, but Upside down?! Or, What If Quake, But Space?!

And so on. I also found the environments to have a surprising amount of environmental story telling - all were evocative and suggested lore and happenings beyond what you see, but blissfully it doesn't bog you down by actually explaining it or anything.

And the enemy placement and room architecture is really witty and fun, and has a real sense of authorship and craft.

Most of all it's nice and tough and fun as heck.

I think I've now played through Base Quake, Dimension of the Past (which includes the brilliant, What If Quake, But Pipes?! variation) and now Dimension of the Machine, and this has turned out to be a real Switch highlight for me (dat gyro!).

Recommended to anyone who ever enjoyed Quake's atmosphere or gunplay.
