IGN 8
Quantum Break is an artistically distinct shooter, with a compelling and malleable plot and excellent performances from its main players in both their digital and live-action forms. While I wish more thought had gone into maintaining the thrill of discovering its time-twisting powers from start to finish, it ultimately didn’t prevent me from thoroughly enjoying Quantum Break’s 10-hour campaign, two times over.

Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there's no getting around the fact that it's driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions.

QUANTUM BREAK IS A SURPRISING SUCCESS
Remedy's touch and style is all over Quantum Break, which is a strength and, at a few points, a weakness as well. But it's more than that, a real transmedia experiment — I know how it sounds — that succeeds in ways that other games don't even try. There's some wonky shooting and a few cringe-worthy story cliches present. But ineffective cover systems and narrative fridges notwithstanding, Quantum Break feels like the first action game taking real lessons from the Netflix binge-watch era, and in that respect, it's a surprising success.

Scratch away at that and you've got a watchable TV series wrapped around a focussed and competent game, but Remedy's keen sense of style manages to elevate Quantum Break to something just about worthwhile. Maybe it's because of how eccentric the whole enterprise is. There's never been anything like Quantum Break, and it's hard to imagine there ever being anything like it again: more often for better than for worse, Remedy's strange hybrid feels like an adventure out of its own time.

Giant Bomb 2 out of 5
On one hand, Quantum Break fits perfectly into Remedy's timeline, representing something grander and more cinematic than the fake TV shows and other ambitious little elements that have worked their way into the studio's past work. But it's probably telling that I was way more excited to watch Quantum Break's fake in-game TV show on various TVs found around the edges of the game than the one that was actually produced and shoved into the middle of the action. There are a lot of sound ideas in the middle of Quantum Break and, hey, if you're a sucker for goofy time travel hijinks this game has that going for it, too. But those ideas are the only things holding this project together. The moment you look past that heady connective tissue, every single one of Quantum Break's individual elements fall flat.

Videogamer 8
Quantum Break, then, is far from bulletproof. It's a game that is over fairly quickly, it misses a trick in combat because Remedy didn't pillage its most famous creation, and it features live action scenes that are best described as enjoyable nonsense. Yet it is just that, enjoyable. Really, really enjoyable once you get to grips with all the powers at your disposal (and level them up). Quantum Break is a glorious use of current-gen power, with the visual fireworks on show making the combat feel positively joyous. As thoroughly entertaining as the whole package is, Quantum Break feels like it managed to reach only 80 per cent of Remedy's potential. If only the technology existed to go back in time to change some design docs.

Despite how pedestrian some aspects of the game may be, I concluded Quantum Break feeling like something new had happened. Something special had happened that more than compensated for some of the flatness of the story and the mostly rote gunplay. A game simply never worked like this before, nor has a TV show. Because of that, what might have otherwise been ordinary feels extraordinary.

Gameinformer 8.5
Quantum Break isn’t a perfect game; it’s a bold experiment in how two mediums can tell a larger story, and at times it pays off. It would be foolish for every game to attempt to emulate this form of storytelling, but Quantum Break as a gaming oddity deserves attention. I wish the events of the show were more significant to the main story, but Quantum Break more than makes up for that with some of the best storytelling and gameplay Remedy has ever produced

EGM 7.5
Overall, Quantum Break is an enjoyable game, but not an amazing experience. I commend Remedy and Microsoft for attempting to merge the two mediums, but the fractures are too present throughout: live-action episodes/computer rendered action, film-grain effects/crisp cut-scenes, godly powers/the ever-present need for cover. If you pick up Quantum Break, however, let me offer one suggestion: pretend it’s an episodic. None of that Netflix binge-watching—pace it out. Play through an act and then wait. Give it a day or two before hopping back in and just take your time. You can thank me later.

Easy Allies (ex-Game Trailers) 4.5 out of 5
Digital Spy 5 out of 5
Is Quantum Break, with its meld of compelling gameplay, strong storyline and high-quality TV series, really the future of gaming? Yes, but maybe it'll be Quantum Break 2 (if there is one) that truly nails it 100%. If they dial back the gorgonzola, the product placement and adjust that cover mechanic, this could have been a perfect game.
But, for now, you've got the best-looking game on Xbox One, jam-packed full of familiar faces and top-notch acting, complemented by strong gameplay mechanics and a popcorn-crunching TV series.

Quantum Break is a memorable game. It makes me truly wonder if any of us can truly escape the reach of time, and it reminds me we all have to live with the choices we make.

Quantum Break represents a bold step for Remedy Entertainment and a high profile console exclusive for Microsoft. Having spent several hours playing and re-playing the opening four acts of the game, exploring its time manipulation powers and collecting pieces of its optional storytelling items, I’m certainly more encouraged than I had expected to be. The show offers an interesting take on the trans-media experience, which has not been very well represented in the past, and looks like it could be capable of some smart uses of its central themes. It may have suffered numerous delays during its development but Quantum Break could yet turn out to be worth the long wait.

Quantum Break seeks to marry the interactivity of games with the passive storytelling of TV shows. It’s the culmination of an idea Remedy first flirted with in Max Payne, then again in Alan Wake. Smartly, the Finnish studio has anchored its wild narrative ambitions on third-person shooting that feels empowering and thrilling. Will it be able to pull the whole thing off though? Time will tell.

Lake describes Quantum Break as “Remedy’s summer blockbuster movie” and that’s definitely what it feels like – a big, slightly silly, sci-fi popcorn flick, with lovely visuals and a neat line in meta-humour (there’s a superb Alan Wake easter egg in one of the university lecture theatres). Microsoft clearly called in Remedy because it needed the studio’s brilliance with narrative, but in the bid to make a mainstream thriller, the old idiosyncrasies have been ironed out. So far, Joyce seems kind of vanilla, maybe even boring. He’s no Wake and he’s certainly no Payne – the weird, psychological wonkiness of those guys is gone. And, hey, how about a female lead for a change? It seemed originally that Beth was going to be playable alongside Joyce; there may even have been early plans to have her as the main protagonist – but all that was jettisoned.

Quantum Break is going to be an extremely interesting game. The mix of our time spent hands-on with the game and the live-action left us with a good feeling. The long wait and the delay from last year had cooled our expectations, but the preview event rekindled our hopes. It seems that Remedy has used that extra time well and Quantum Break looks like one of the most visually and narratively ambitious video games in a long time. It's a fascinating hybrid of a sci-fi action game and live-action storytelling, but it's almost impossible to gauge how well everything will lock into place by the end. There is also no avoiding that for some people the live-action scenes will feel like an unnecessary gimmick. Remedy seems to know this, but has chosen this route with the intention of breaking new ground in video game storytelling. We can't wait to get our hands on the final game in April.

The news is out. We’re working on something new and exciting, something big, called Quantum Break. Which means that the next big game from Remedy is not going to be Alan Wake 2. That’s probably somewhat of a shock to many of you out there. I’ve been biting my tongue, dying to tell you about this a lot sooner, but here we are.
I’m really proud of everything we‘ve done with Alan Wake so far. We all love Wake dearly at Remedy, and definitely want to make more Wake games when the time is right, but right now we are really excited and fully committed to making Quantum Break into the best Remedy game so far, the ultimate Remedy experience. I hope you’ll like it too. We’ve put together a video where I talk about this decision and Wake in general in more detail. You’ll be able to see that tomorrow.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed in an interview this afternoon that the footage you saw for Forza Motorsport 5 and Remedy's Quantum Break this morning are running on Xbox One dev kits. Not renders or some other trickery, you skeptics.
