They had admittedly been saying it was going to be split into multiple parts for years now. Bigger issue is the apparent rewriting of the story that's happened, which is bound to wind up some people.

I’ve never played a FF game but may give the remake of 7 a go because it looks great, but looking in, it seems their biggest mistake was not being open and honest about this from the start. If Day 1, they’d said it’s going to be a “reimagining” of the original people would have gone in knowing what to expect.

Don't know exactly but it's some dumb gooseberry fool about this game taking place in a different reality than the original FF7, there's these Dementor things trying to keep things the same as that game but the gang ends up defeating them and things pan out differently. I don't think Aerith dies in this one.
