I'm surprised that we haven't got either. Maybe we would if war in Ukraine was a Nintendo game.

Wait until Ad finds out Nintendo ported the 2014 Crimea invasion :fp:

Encircled by a ring of red, too. It's like we predicted it.

Haven't you noticed we've been flying the Ukrainian flag colours this whole time? ;)

Perhaps i'm just a jaded and grumpy old bastard nowadays, but i just saw a thread on there in which the OP recommends the resetera members watch a 100 minute youtube video about the politics of the Harry Potter series.

Jeezus, how boring can you possibly get? I'm not saying that because it's HP either, as i'd say exactly the same if it was about any other popular franchise.

If i was a member, i'd tell them to just go have sex with something instead.

No, highlighting how JK Rowling is a piece of gooseberry fool isn't boring, it's important.

Having sex with something is rarely boring. Unless it’s a boar.

That video isn't literally just about the politics in Harry Potter, its examining the various themes and problematic stereotypes, and considering HP is one of the biggest franchises ever, that kind of scrutiny is important, especially within the context of Rowling's bigoted views.

Is that the new one by Shaun? I haven't watched it yet but he's put out some brilliant content in the past so I'd definitely give it a go.

I find it grimly fascinating how conditioned a lot of people are to separate out 'politics' from anything that politics actually touches.

Watched it earlier this afternoon. It's interesting, if not particularly groundbreaking. The points about how lazily she'd incorporated racist and anti semitic caricatures was a bit of an easy target, but that doesn't really excuse them. And I guess when I read them it really didn't strike me that one of the central themes of the story is 'slavery is fine so long as you're nice to your slaves' which is an interesting undertone for a kids book. I did like that he was quite explicit that he didn't think that the series was intentionally about a neoliberal (God I hate that term) endorsement of the status quo as a system and just that the wrong people were in charge and that that being an emergent theme of the books is just because that's exactly what Rowling believes and so of course that bled into the work.

I did like the point about 'book lag', where some bollocks is brought up in a book and gets a backlash while she's writing the next one, and so gets explicitly addressed in the stupidest way possible in the book after that one was funny.

"Why don't they use time travel anymore? Eh? Eh? Because they all FELL OFF THE SHELF. Happy now? Fuckwits"

Reading the first HP book (I never bothered with the rest), I was struck with just how simplistic, two dimensional and poorly written it was, even for a novel aimed at children. I don't believe Rowling is a deep thinker, and that's putting it mildly. Also, there were whole chapters that just read like a 13-year old's English homework: Then Harry did this. And then Hermione said that, and then this happened. And then that happened.

I'm not surprised it took her so long to get a publisher to agree to take it on. Its success was always baffling to me. I guess children can ignore the terrible prose - and I've never once bought the excuse that the style of prose was deliberately like that, she was a poor writer (early on at least).

I didn't read any of them until the last one was released because the synopsis of the final book sounded interesting and my missus at the time was adamant that you couldn't just read the last one. I do remember the first three and a half books being an absolute slog, but at the time I put that down to it meant to be a series that you 'grew up' with, and you were meant to read the first one when you were like 8, and the final one when you were about 18. I seem to remember the last three being pretty good actually, the 6th one in particular stuck out in my mind at the time as being good fun, but I'm a sucker for a story that is essentially all backstory that remains consistent with the established lore but puts everything in a new light.

It feels like almost every other thread in their gaming section lately is just someone else wanking themselves into a coma over Elden Ring.
