Dirty is a legit type of food but I see there's a lot of Americans in that thread kicking up a fuss because it's not a term over there. I could see why it would annoy people taking it the wrong way.

Saying it's dirty because it's street food does encapsulate that whole "slumming it with the locals" aspect of shitty travel culture though.

I can't find the origin of it but I bet it's almost certainly a term made up by some white chef for their cookbook.

I always interpreted it to just mean you've lumped a load of unhealthy topping on something, i.e. the opposite of a 'clean'/healthy meal. The term 'unhealthy fries' or 'unhealthy burger' was hardly going to catch on.

Then again I won't be at all surprised if there is a racist trend of terming food as dirty if it's seen as being popular with or cooked by poor people/foreigners. Bloody bigots, coming here, twisting our food descriptors!

If I said i fancied a dirty burger, it would be an indulgent overly topped one that's no good for you but you want to have it anyway. "Lets go to the pub and have a few pints and a dirty burger". If we've got a hangover, it's a dirty kebab to fix it. I'd say a wetherspoons curry would be in the dirty category. I'd never use dirty as a thing to say it was unhygenic or anything.

Dirty in the context of unhealthy burgers or loaded fries or whatever is obviously not an issue in any way but she does seem to be implying she is cleaning up and refining "dirty Asian food", which yeah, isn't great. Looking at her recipes and posts it just looks like standard Asian dishes to me.
