To be honest there are some good ideas in that gaf redesign. It's funny how they've entirely split out their caustic politics discussion though (keep politics out of our gaems!!). Bit too much padding though, reminds me of the awful tapatalk redesign. They're trying to make information clearer with more space and friendlier for newcomers but that doesn't always help a communications heavy site because once your settled in it's less convenient for users. Look at the information density on Facebook or Twitter, it's still very high (although it uses a fixed width column and endless scrolling instead).

The currently completely redundant tags on resetera look a lot like ours.

Have you seen the new ResetEra design? It's coming on Friday https://www.resetera.com/threads/introd ... r-2.79943/

Dang that's a lot of slide in menus and stuff. A few good ideas though, although a lot of them are simply features of xenforo which is a lot more ambitious than phpBB has ever been.

I just don't understand their obsession with that strawberry floating purple, it instantly undoes any work they've done and now they've added not only drop shadows but PURPLE drop shadows.

Reminds me of the proprietary glow effect that only worked on Internet explorer I had on my forum for mates to dick around on in 2003.

I do like the idea of threadmarks and to some extent topic covers, however I would only implement those on page one of the topic and not in the navigation.

It's ugly and so much less practical, everything is bloated and it looks like it's designed only for touch screens.

Whoever got put on design there has a penchant for the "app" look (and purple) and so doesn't seem to want to admit it's just a strawberry floating website. Stop adding buttons and menus. Stop trying to save screen real estate on 1080p screens and when you can't do that just add moar padding. And just make the thing full width. If you're going to have a responsive website don't unresponsive it. Just WHY are ther collapsible menus on a 1080p screen? I appreciate but there is an optimal line length (you actually optimise this with line height but let's forget typography for a minute) but the current margin and padding they have in the thread view is ridiculous. You can fix that by using the space for other useful, non-invasive stuff.

To be fair I enjoy complaining about web design for the sake of it largely because I have little to no opportunity to do it anymore so I can just ridicule those that try their best.

That strawberry floating purple though.

Nah mate the max width is the one thing it does right

I didn't actually realise it had it because my browser is at a sensible width anyway

Not on the default view. It's here that you see the designer putting in their theories or personal preferences because everything else is just designing around that instead of typically solving the users problems.

I'm probably not understanding what you mean about optimal line length, but I thought that was why having a max width is a good idea - because over a certain word line length text blocks become harder to read

You do know what I mean, I missed that you meant not setting max-width (the CSS parameter) to 100%

I still think you can introduce something in the margins rather than just wasting space however. Even if it's just a background colour. A magazine or broadsheet is comparable in size to some screens but this 30% margin concept just doesn't exist, they have some other kind of information there, whether it's visual or whatever.

If you've tried browsing the current resetera on an iPad for example, you'll see what I mean. It's about 30% margin.

The technical reason that longer runs of text are harder to read is when line spacing isn't enough, so your eyes flit between. There isn't really any technical reason why a human can't read lines of text as long as the total media is something they can practically look at.

If you have a long run of text you need linespace of about 1.25-1.5em.

I'll admit that 100% width is a relatively lazy way of implementing responsive design, but at least it comes with the benefit of not introducing loads of stuff in different places on different layouts, so it's consistent and the only thing you have is for example a collapsible menu.

And one other upshot of that is if you have really long posts that we tend to have, it reduces scrolling. It starts to become a problem on ridiculous screen sizes where you could argue someone should be sensible enough not to have their browser maximised on a 4K screen.

Of course I understand the importance of negative space, there's just something kind of ill considered about Resetera's current design, like nobody has dug in and extracted all the padding and margins that don't achieve anything, or just added 5px margin to every single element. It's also very plain making that colour borderline prostitutional. The redesign is a bit better.

Asking here as I don't know where to ask, but is there any way the UK vs US Gamesradar photoshop thing can be found? I fancy looking back at it. Also, I want to show Kriken how naughty you guys were.
