I think the anime community tends to attract, well, weird people. Weird isn't bad - I'm weird, and to an extent I like anime
because it's weird - but it's easy to see how the hobby has become associated with the worst kind of weird person. If your personality quirk is that you're harmlessly shy / awkward, you probably aren't making much of an impression on people. But if your quirk is that you're obnoxious, everyone will remember and forever associate you with anime.
I hang out in a lot of queer friendly anime spaces and that filters out most of the bad'ns, so I can't say I have a bad impression of the community in general, but I hear things are a bit different on e.g. Twitter.

I've installed a browser extension that lets you change words, so any time someone there uses "yikes" it gets changed to "I'm a banana split".
