Only heard the word nonce for child molester, never for idiot.

Maybe they meant “dunce”.

I heard "nonce" get used as a general insult when I was a kid and probably used it once or twice myself when younger - thinking it was along the lines of "nonse" being short for "nonsense" or something related to that. After finding out that it also meant paedo, I don't think I've heard anyone use it in any other context.

In my increasingly more common jaunts over to Gaf (it makes me feel better about myself during these times, okay), I saw this absolute beaut of a thread title:

I know it means paedophile, but I've definitely heard it used in a way that isn't solely for accusing someone of that, in the same way a lot of swear words are. Like, you might tell someone to stop noncing about if they're acting a bit stupid.

I thnk it's likely only used as something other that a kiddy fiddler if the person doesn't know the meaning of it, like many slang words.

I've definitely said nonce and not meant it as paedo, but that would have been before what it meant. Same with mong, I remember a period of school where we used to call each other things, that being one of them. Again, I don't remember it being anything other than just meaning someone was stupid (becuase we'd call each other it if we'd done something daft).

Atrocious really. LGBT awareness was almost entirely non-existent. To be gay was considered to be a terrible thing, not even based on a considered opinion of any kind, it just was, just because.

Opponents to education around LGBT issues within schools are strawberry floating morons.

Yeah we had the same thing with all of these being used as generic insults - gay, mong, spastic all being thrown about.

I also recall a period where the default insult in our school was to call someone "ginger" as if having red hair was the strawberry floating worst crime imaginable!

You laugh, but I know people in their 30s and 40s that try to occasionally make me the butt of jokes because I have a ginger beard. It's odd how some things just stick with people.
