I've thought about the same thing before. I'm not religious, but I was brought up in a religious household. Morally, it's had an impact on my behaviour. I would say it's been pretty positive.

My girlfriend is Islamic so I've been thinking about it a lot recently.

Throughout history religion is famous for making people more tolerant....

Evening Standard wrote:Top five most offences by TfL route since 2014/15

Overground - 655
Jubilee line - 527
Central line - 499
Northern line - 494
District line - 473

Racist offences on Transport for London's (TfL) rail network have doubled in the space of four years, with a leading anti-hate crime charity saying Brexit tensions could be partly to blame.

Rose Simkins, chief executive of Stop Hate UK, today urged Leave and Remain politicians to tone down the rhetoric as new figures revealed a spike in racially and religiously aggravated offences on the Tube and other rail services in the capital.

She said: “Language is really important in not fuelling this."

British Transport Police (BTP) data obtained by the Standard under the Freedom of Information Act showed that in 2018/19, there were 1,143 reported offences on the Tube, Overground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), TfL Rail and Tramlink.

This was nearly double the 575 reported in 2014/15. Most of the 1,081 crimes reported in the 2016/17 year happened after the Brexit referendum.

Ms Simkins told the Standard: "The figures don’t surprise me. Everybody working to combat hate crime is aware there are tensions causing these increases. After the referendum, the number of hate crimes increased and there is also evidence of a slow increase at the moment.

“There are definitely feelings of increased hostility towards people who are different. The current situation of political uncertainty, and some people using Leave as an anti-immigration platform, means there is greater hostility towards people who are perceived to be from another country."

In one instance, in October last year, a woman was punched in the face on the Overground, claiming it was because she was speaking Spanish. Her attacker reportedly said: "You shouldn’t speak other languages."

Ms Simkins continued: “Language [of elected officials] is really important in not fuelling this. We often see politicians using antagonistic and divisive language.

"The way the Leave and Remain debate has continued and been managed has increased that tension - and in many ways created it. This might not have happened if it was handled differently."

She added an increasing number of victims and onlookers reporting hate crimes is another factor behind the jump since 2014/15: "Institutions like ourselves, British Transport Police and the government have campaigned to raise more awareness on how to report hate crimes.

“Before, people might not have known they can report it, or thought no one cared. But there’s now a stronger message."

I'd love to know what rhetoric on the remain side has encouraged racist abuse.

There is a little bit where Remainers say things like “lol we’ll be full of Blacks and Muslim’s when we get rid of the Poles!”.

It’s not meant in the same way, but still adds to the idea of good and bad immigrants.

One of the worst offenses yet:

BBC News wrote:A couple say they were subjected to a homophobic attack and left covered in blood after refusing to kiss on a bus.

Melania Geymonat, 28, said the attack on her and girlfriend Chris happened on the top deck of a London night bus as they were travelling to Camden Town in the early hours of 30 May.

A group of young men began harassing them when they discovered the women were a couple, asking them to kiss while making sexual gestures.

Scotland Yard is investigating.

Ms Geymonat posted on her Facebook page: "In an attempt to calm things down, I started making jokes. I thought this might make them go away. Chris even pretended she was sick, but they kept on harassing us, throwing us coins and becoming more enthusiastic about it.

"The next thing I know is that Chris is in the middle of the bus fighting with them. On an impulse, I went over there only to find her face bleeding and three of them beating her up.

"The next thing I know is I'm being punched. I got dizzy at the sight of my blood and fell back. I don't remember whether or not I lost consciousness. Suddenly the bus had stopped, the police were there and I was bleeding all over."

Ms Geymonat added that the gang of at least four men might have broken her nose during the ordeal, and stole a phone and bag from them before fleeing.

Both women were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries.

Ms Geymonat said one of the men spoke Spanish and the others had British accents.

Siwan Hayward, director of compliance, policing and on-street services at Transport for London, described the assault as "sickening" and "utterly unacceptable", adding that "homophobic behaviour and abuse is a hate crime and won't be tolerated on our network".

Police are appealing for witnesses for the attack which happened at about 02:30 BST on a N31 bus in West Hampstead.

There were 2,308 homophobic hate crimes across London in 2018, compared with 2014 when 1,488 were recorded, according to the Metropolitan Police's crime dashboard.

The Met's Det Sgt Anthony Forsythsaid there had been a "steady increase in the reporting of all hate crime", which was partly due to the "growing willingness of victims to report crime and the improved awareness by police".

Is there any reasonable reason they weren't immediately charged with a hate crime?

Just vile. The photo is heartbreaking.

Pisses me off the way we get complaints about schools teaching LGBT relationships.

Now, I’m not trying to make excuses for these banana splits for a second, but they’re 15-18 year olds. They’ve inherited their prejudices from the twats surrounding them. Teaching kids how to live in an inclusive society from a young age is the way forward.

It's just weird that we NEED to teach kids that people are different, if you get me? Like it's 2019, people should really just be used to it as the norm.

People bring gay etc, not attacking peopoe for their various sexualities.

I was chastised for being "gay" all the time at secondary school, and so was my friend who was actually gay. I'm not surprised if that is still happening 20 years later.

I think it's less about needing to teach kids that people are different, more about having some control over how it's introduced to children, and to normalise it.

Clearly there's a portion of society that aren't getting introduced to different things when they are going or, even worse, getting introduced to it in a judgemental, discriminatory manner by bigotted, blinkered parents.
