Reviews are landing; Metacritic currently stands at 73 from 21 reviews (PC), 76 from 4 reviews (PS4) and 70 from 1 review (XBO). It appears that console versions were not issued for review to many outlets prior to launch.

The general impression seems to be "great shooting action but with a short story and no real reason to continue exploring the openworld". I was really keen to try this out but, for me, I'll be holding off for a price drop.

I think that's what I was expecting really. Mad Max never really did it for me and this looks like a spiritual sequel with better shooting mechanics.

EDIT: Although...

Kirk is generally a great reviewer so...now I'm excited again.

Getting this from Game tomorrow and looking forward to playing it. I took advantage of their extra 25% credit on trade-ins when you pre-order.
HOWEVER...I've just packed my work bag for tomorrow with the games I'm trading in and the receipt which they give you for the deal. I read the receipt upon packing it. It says the offer is valid for 7 days from the date on it (I pre-ordered last Sunday).

Oh my days.

Of course Game would run a promotion to pre-order stuff where the date to take advantage of the offer doesn't take place until the pre-ordered software releases. I can't believe I'm surprised. strawberry floating gooseberry fool company.

Sooooo...I'm off to Game tomorrow to have an argument no doubt. Awesome.

Got my copy on Saturday and I'd agree with the sentiment of those reviews. The shooting is fun but I'm not so gripped that I see myself doing much more than the story.

I am gonna be joining you guys in the wasteland! Meant to be avoiding purchases but I cancelled other stuff so, yeah, I'm ready to rage in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Will be back later to share thoughts!

I've decided to hold off buying Rage 2 for the time being. I've God of War currently doing the rounds and I want to get back to AC Odyssey, Nier Automata and Fallout 76.

Rage 2 can wait.

Once it hits under £30 I'll pick it up, Bethesda games that aren't Skyrim or Fallout do seem to drop in price quite quickly.

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/3k3a ... mediocrity

If only Rage 2 existed in a vacuum, its every moment might not remind you of the better games that it borrows from. The fast, gracefully violent combat would feel like a welcome return to the classic shooter formula that id Software pioneered and perfected across the 1990s, except that we already experienced this back in 2016 with the new edition of Doom which, frankly, did it better. Driving across the broken desert wastelands in armored muscle cars, shooting it out with roving enemy convoys, is kind of novel but it’s also a pale shadow of what Avalanche Studios accomplished in its own Mad Max game in 2015. The entire campaign structure, where you bounce between a map covered in activities and hub locations where you get mission from thinly-written goofball characters, is reminiscent of the modern Far Cry series in all the wrong ways and few of the good ones.

Waypoint/Vice didn't like it much, essentially saying it takes features from it's progenitors, Mad Max, Doom, Far Cry, and does them all worse. Which is a real shame as the marketing seemed to all be about pushing everything that little bit further.
