Now I wasn't at the show, haven't played a second of the game either, but where's the appeal? Looks incredibly derivative, with shades of Fallout 3, Metro 2033 and Doom 3 (EDIT - Borderlands too), sprinkled with... tada, driving sections! Tell me if this storyline doesn't sound familiar:

"The game will be set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland created by an asteroid impact. The world will be populated by human survivors of the impact who were preserved from the asteroid by being buried in cryo-pods called Arks."

You then leave your Ark following a cataclysmic event, reach the surface and have to find if there is life in the other Arks (cough, Vaults).

Anyone in the forum had hands-on time with Rage, am I completely way-off?

Looks dull as strawberry float to me, too.

I spoke to a couple of people who saw this (on the Thursday, and as my Observer piece had to be submitted by Wednesday I didn't book an appointment to see it) and they came away raving about it. It's basically Borderlands crossed with Fallout with much better graphics and gunplay than both and ace vehicle sections, apparently.

I'd have thought Bulletstorm might have been up there, too. Even if the dialogue made my toes curl.

At a technical level perhaps? 60fps @ 720P with an unprecedented level of detail. ID really are GODs when it comes to 3d engines.

All the media they've shown from the game has looked really good so I'm not surprised it took a lot of awards at E3. Really looking forward to it myself.

The sanctuary born hero stepping out onto the post-apocalyptic wasteland is probably going to become the new space marine with a thinning crown.

Yes, this is the key to understanding RAGE's critical plaudits. John Carmack is a very, very respected figure in the industry (for very good reason) and his work on idTech5 is quite simply stunning. id are still one of the few developers at the very cutting edge of game technology; their in-house-developed games have always been nothing less than giant advertisements for their bespoke game engines, and RAGE is no exception - it's a giant billboard to announce to potential licensees that idTech5 is pretty f*cking amazing!

Doom3 was the same. At least, that was idea. In the end, that plan didn't work out - idTech4 got closed out by both Valve's Source Engine and, more devastatingly, Epic's Unreal3 Engine. Carmack's engine was still a wonder back in 2004, but the big bucks went to Epic and third party engine licensing has been languishing there pretty much ever since.

Time will tell if idTech5 is fated to suffer the same ignominious indifference as that which befell its forebear. Epic are so on their game these days, it's going to be an uphill battle to try and wean developers off their Unreal3 habits - when the majority of your staff have spent the past four years working with a particular engine tech it's a big ask to get them up to speed on a new engine with deadlines looming, no matter how gorgeous-looking that game engine might be.

Me? I'm just looking forward to RAGE. Just looks amazing. I love the fact that Tim Willets of id (a personal hero of mine for the artistic lead he took on Doom3) is talking up the predominantly FPS-based elements of the game, rather than the more incidental driving aspects. He wants the faithful to know (and be reassured) that id are doing what they've always done best: have gun, will shoot. In some of the lushest visual environments you'll find in any game this generation. 8-)

All this, and Doom4 still to come. :P

 I love it when Cal gets excited about a game.

Cal, if you ever start your own blog, do let me know. Genuinely love reading about your enthusiasm towards games of a certain type.

I'd just come into this thread to say it was the kind of game to get you hot under the collar, too. From a purely technical standpoint, it does look seriously impressive.

Too kind. It's true, I do have a huge blindside for id - they have to be my favourite developer, after all, and if I was twenty years younger and had even a smidgen of talent for game design I'd make it my mission to go work for them. Alas. Instead, I have to be content to fly an often lonely flag for Carmack and co - by the time RAGE see store shelves it will have been seven years since id's last in-house developed title (Doom3 - 2004) was released. Talk about taking the p*ss.

For better or worse, through all the lean years, I am truly one of the faithful.

I don't know, there's something admirable about dedicating seven years to a game and an engine that can run it and look really f**king good. There's not many devs that would be able to do that in this day and age. Rage could well represent a big financial risk for id, so you kind of hope that it does well for them. It's not nice to see a hard-working developer go to the wall.

Meh, the character models seem very, I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but plastic like. Sort of like an action figure features and folds in clothing etc seem to stick out and be shaded to a depth that they should not be, almost like they try to draw your eye towards them to let you know they are there.

I personally don't like that art style very much but to each their own.

Hmmmm. I don't know about that. I love iD games probably as much as Cal and my all time favourite game is Quake, but this leaves me a little cold. It looks stunning and I can't wait to see how it runs on my ninja PC, but from a gameplay perspective it looks like nothing new. The setting, racing and outlandish characters has been seen before with the likes of Borderlands, Fallout 3 & New Vegas. The lightning gun and water damage is a throwback to Quake and more recently Bioshock, and the shooting just seems like a usual competent FPS. There doesn't seem to be anything "special" about the gameplay unlike say Portal 2 for example. Of course i'm just judging it on a couple of videos but then that's how it is. Technically astounding, but then that's it. Game of the show though? For me that's a no.
