PostRatchet & Clank or Jak & Daxter?
by KK » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:06 pm

Eurogamer have taken a look back at the original Jak & Daxter - not particularly thoroughly, but a look back nonetheless - & decided that, of the two games, Ratchet & Clank was better.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... cle?page=1

I loved the original J&D. It was probably the last genuine platform game I ever played, & right up there with Mario Sunshine as the best platformer of the last generation. Wouldn't mind playing it again if Sony ever got round to doing a HD remake. Thought the series lost its way with Jak 2 - almost everything I enjoyed from the original was stripped out, replaced with an open world, that I didn't find enjoyable to traverse, guns & a difficulty spike that was bloody tough. It was basically the GTA effect: we'll have none of that happy, sunny gooseberry fool; give me angst & a whole lot of firepower!

Anyway...Jak & Daxter. Blatantly better than R&C, right?

Jak & Daxter all the way! Precursor Legacy was the best platformer on the PS2.

Ratchet & Clank games haven't dipped in quality, each game is great(bar PSP), but Jak & Daxter have been in one great game, one good game, one average and one awful game.

Sly Cooper > both

The first Jak is definitely better than the first Ratchet. No doubt about that. However Jak then slipped with the sequels. The second is still enjoyable and I think the thrid is highly underrated, but the misstep in changing to the open world format took time to correct, whereas Ratchet went for a slower yet more consistent progression. Ratchet 3 is the peak of the PS2 games and is amongst the most effortlessly playable games I own, must have completed it at least a dozen times. Jak gets props for risking it with the sequels, but the Ratchet series is superior.

Prefer the Sly games anyway. :shifty:

R&C is hindered by it's very concept. The lack of real challenge to the platforming and focus on weaponry results in a game that is good, but not great, no matter how much polish they manage to lather on top of it.

I preferred the first Ratchet to Jak & Daxter, and every game after R&C1 has been of a similar quality.

However, they're pretty much all the same, and I grew fatigued of the format (and the shitty, shitty, shitty enemy AI) before the end of the second game.

The first three Jak games didn't have that problem at all, so if we're comparing first 3 to first 3, Jak is the clear winner.

Crack in Time is superb and has loads of variety to the gameplay.

Yeah, but he's comparing the first three PS2 games. Which I might dispute, as I thought the third R&C on that console had plenty of variety.

It really did. Crack in Time felt more like 3 than any of the others.

I have gone on the record saying A Crack In Time is the best R&C game since the original. Though, still not as good.

Jak & Daxter is good, but I much, much prefer Ratchet & Clank. My favourite series on PS2 and PS3 (I'd say PSP too, but I thought Size Matters is most boring R&C game I've ever played. I do like Clank: Secret Agent though). I never get tired of R&C

It's still saddening to see Jak & Daxter being away from what the first game offered though - the first one was great pure platformer but now the pureness has been gone.

Such a difficult question. I join the general consensus in that the first Jak and Daxter is better than most Ratchet Games, although R&C 3 - and in particular A Crack in Time - are probably more entertaining.
Regarding Jak's questionable evolution from a pure platformer to more of a shooter, I can't help but feel as though - in a way - it almost had to be done. I mean, they had to evolve the franchise somehow - the PS2 era went on and on and on and I think that if Jak's sequels were just replicas of the first one, they'd have been crucified. Maybe.

No R&C game can be as good as the original, because they totally removed the feeling of progress.

Remember first seeing the floating Swingshot orbs in the sky and being confused? Remember trying to walk out onto the first grind rail section you see and falling to your death? Remember the feeling of awe as you thought it looked like some awesome rollercoaster? Remember looking at mag-boots sections and thinking "What the fuuuuuuuucccccckkkkkk?!" ? Remember how they actually made sense and you were stuck to the surface, with Ratchet making really laboured steps to move along? Remember upgrading Clank?

Used to be, you'd get a gadget and your mind would be racing at all the areas you've seen before that you can now access. None of that since the first.

Jak & Daxter for me as I played each game beyond the credits. By the time I finished each Ratchet game I was done with the game and had no interest whatsoever in going back to find platinum bolts or upgrading my weapons.

I don't want this to be one of those 'you don't like, don't post' posts but I just do not like any of them. It's the art style. It just doesn't do anything for me. It's one of the big reasons I couldn't get into any of their respected franchises

Ratchet and Clank was amazing during the PS2 era, but after R&C3 it kind of lost its magic. It's still good, just not the instant classics that the originla trilogy were.

Jak on the other hand changed drastically from game to game, and I love all three. The first is definitely the best though.

I still felt R&C games have magic, personally (apart from Size Matters ). The humor (yes, I like ol' cartoon humor), the guns, and exploration (even if there wasn't much of it, but it was decent enough to make me look around for bolts and such) and while the gameplay is fairly simple, it's good enough for me. Simple, yet brilliantly fun games.

But I can understand why people would think they'd lose their magic - they do get samey, after all. I don't mind that personally though.
