Hope this gets ported to PS4, I love Ratchet and have played most of the games but don't have the PS5 yet.

Looks as though the rt 60 update downloaded the other day and thats the one I will use, but will try out the high res/ 60fps mode too as I do not think this is an rt heavy game.

This is never getting ported, too system intensive for a start.

Yeah the main mechanic of the game is entirely based around the super fast loading provided by the PS5, unless they redesign the game it's not getting a PS4 release

Pretty crazy that within the first few years of the PS5 Sony will release a new HZD, GoW, GT and R&C, and it's only R&C that is going to take true advantage of the SSD that Sony went all in on.

Given that their speciality tends to be wide linear 3rd person games, where the pace is often slow, predictable and dialogue heavy (giving plenty of time to mask load times through "elevators"), I do wonder if Sony first party titles need this feature less than just about anybody else. At no point was i ever frustrated by load times playing GoW 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn (post death reloads notwithstanding), UC 4 or TLOU Part 2.

Its great tech that will be / is usefull for a huge amount of games, but perhaps Sonys own stuff least of all.

TLOU Part 2 load times felt next gen, no idea how they did it.

I really do think its a combination of very clever people and a format of game that lends itself to knowing exactly what it needs to load in down the road. R & C appears to genuinely be different in this way. A cynic would say its basing the core game mechanic around a new technology "because it can", but i dont think there is anything wrong with that. I still love pulling levers in VR - it could be argued that's not revolutionary gameplay.

Load times on Horizon were strawberry floating atrocious on PS4. Initial load, restart from death and any kind of fast travel were just awful. :dread:

I do think it's a good point that the style of game doesn't necessarily benefit massively from the super fast storage on the PS5, but if they can iron out those few problems that loading provided then it's still a big win IMO.

Yeah, Horizon definitely struggled with load times.

I've only died a couple of times to be fair - the fact that it still sticks out as a problem is a sign that it really is gooseberry fool!

Sleep mode works well, if it's the only game you are playing, but if you're jumping between games then that first loading time is a killer. :dread:

I know ;) In fairness it really was the only game i played when i bought it, but Game Pass etc has made me realise that swapping between games and the associated load time is a valid concern after all.

Since picking up my PS5 I've really got into Horizon to be fair, I just discovered it has an in game timer and I've managed to sink 60+ hours into now - I think I was only on about 15 from my time with it on PS4!

Getting back to Ratchet, it's easy to think that they designed the "gimmick" of the game around the storage, or did it just because they could, but I'd imagine the designers of these kinds of action platformers have been throwing around ideas like the rift mechanic for years and it's just now they can actually do it!

The load times when reloading a section were fast (thankfully, as that's a big part of the game) but the initial load was pretty long. It was more the noise as well, on a base PS4.

I got Horizon in that freebie campaign the other month, so will probably leave it for when I get back to my PS5 in a few months.

Well, that depends what your interpretation of “taking full advantage of the SSD” is. No loading screens ever in Demon’s Souls, Returnal, two Spider-Man games, Sackboy’s Adventure and Astro’s Playroom are certainly doing it, especially when the last 4 of those let you jump straight to any part of the game in an instant from the OS when the game isn’t even running.

It’s easy to look at the dimension-hopping in Ratchet as a gameplay experience you simply couldn’t have without ultra-fast storage, but that doesn’t mean flexing previously-impossible loading scenarios suits every game in the world, or even most games.

Basically, if you’re expecting to round a corner in Trial Mountain only to be suddenly in Monza, I think you might want to adjust your expectations of what a next gen-only Gran Turismo is.

Side note though: A racing game with power ups where you can send your opponent to another, potentially more difficult track for a sector actually sounds extremely great

Yes sorry, I should have clarified, by taking advantage of the SSD I meant new gameplay experiences not things like loading screens. Dropping in and out with no loading screens is obviously great, don't get me wrong, but I'm more interested in how it will create new gameplay opportunities. Ratchet and Clank makes me want to get a PS5 whereas the new GOW having no loading screens just makes me think I'll get it on PS4. Of course, I caveat that with the assumption the actual game experiences won't be drastically different which we don't know yet obviously.

The example you have given there would probably make the biggest case for the next gen so far. Imagine if there was an arcade mode only in the PS5 version that features what you describe? Or power ups that makes your car change model instantly as well? That would be awesome in VR. Possibly.

They should bring back Kessen. Essentially a more strategic Dynasty Warriors, you'd have a large scale strategic overview but be able to zoom in to individual battles and take control of the commander to fight on the ground. Imagine the scale and variety of battles you could jump between with next-gen load times - Ratchet's rifts are kind of similar in a way.

(In general I think Warriors games could be pushing each generation much more, they've basically existed on the same scale since their inception but with each generation imagine if the focus was on improving the AI of individual soldiers and how many can be on screen at a single time. That's what I wish more power was used on rather than just shinier graphics.)

If you’re paying attention to anything on social media about this game this evening, they’ve unveiled the RYNO for this game and it’s... something.

I personally wish I didn’t find out about it so if you’ve somehow avoided it and still want it to be a surprise, don’t click this:

The gun opens portals to other dimensions and drops stuff from other games (Horizon, Uncharted, Sly and Sunset Overdrive) on enemies.

The clip shows a Thunderjaw appearing to strawberry float gooseberry fool up

Don’t know how likely it is you can remain unspoiled though, if they’re leading the current marketing push with it.
