The Last of Us Remastered- 9.5

Well, that was pretty great. Felt like much more of a 'game' than the Uncharted series - which I think was primarily down to the upgrade systems, and the strategy the combat offered. Reminded me a bit of Resi 4, which I also really like, with a couple of its systems.

I was initially frustrated with the aiming/shooting, but the stealth was so fun I didn't mind - but in the second half as I got better, I got more buffs, and I had a larger range of weapons it really came together. There was maybe 2 or 3 times I took out a group with ease, but rather than feel boring it felt so satisfying, as I would have struggled with the same challenge a few chapters earlier.

The pacing and variety felt great. Flipping between infected and human encounters, and mixed in tense and relaxed moments with NCP ensured no part really got stale. There were some great 'set pieces' (I particularly liked the sections you controlled Ellie, and the cumulation of that section - it was a great mini story/section), although there was only really one moment that felt like an 'Uncharted' style set piece.

The only real downsides were a slight jankiness in the controls - combat and normal, but I suppose part of this is down to age of the original game and engine used. But the shooting was better than it was in Uncharted 1-3 at least, the slower pace really helps. The other one was the environmental puzzles, while great to begin with peaked way to early - and again movement jankiness occasionally was distracting during these. But these are very much minor criticisms.

The story was great and engaging through out, and did a great job to get me to route and empathise for them, and then feel conflict over the brutal ending.

Tomorrow I need to play the DLC then I'll start number 2.

Last of Us Left Behind - 9

That was a great little story, and I really enjoyed the space it gave itself just to explore it's idea and characters. Being able to use the infected to attack humans was a nice expansion in the combat. Really glad I played it, since I almost forgot all about it.

Now on to TLoU2

Edit: I have the disc version and it still needs more than half an hour to install. Da fuq. I didn't ask for this future

Edit 2: Oh my god, been an hour and a half and it's been stuck on 99% of an update for ages

Far Cry 5

I really enjoyed it actually. Far more than I thought I would. And I didn't think the ending was as stupid as everyone made it out to be. I mean the whole game is daft from start to finish but it was in keeping with the tone of the rest of the game, it's not like the ending came out of nowhere. Great fun.

No interest in playing it to completion though, just enough to see the end was the right amount.

Fire Emblem Three Houses

Ignoring everything I disliked about this game, the final mission was genuinely awesome. So many of my students died in that last battle but each death felt so impactful because of the teacher/student theme of the game. It's genuinely upsetting to think some of my best kids didn't survive. The individual character epilogues at the end was a nice touch. So many dead students but at least two of them got married together

Glad it's over now though. The rubbish anime story really dragged and at 70+ hours it was too long for the content on offer.

Forza Horizon 4: 9/10

'Finished' is subjective. However, as far as I'm concerned I've finished the main game and the two DLC packs - even though I've largely ignored the drift club aspects. I don't know how this was received in terms of reviews, but this is now officially one of my favourite driving games alongside Collin McRae Rally 2.0, Rallysport Challenge 2 and Burnout 3: Takedown.

I didn't have any expectations going in - I just wanted to try it as a return to driving games after a long absence. It blew me away, and it is the first game in a long, long time where I could feel a smile on my face from the very first second of the game. Those area intros

In general, I'm not a fan of open-world games but this just blends everything together seamlessly. You are given an unparalleled level of choice about the activities you want to take part in, and you aren't penalised for ignoring the ones you don't.

In terms of gameplay it leans towards the more arcadey side because you aren't penalised as severely as sims for bad corners/hitting things. However, the cars feel like they are supposed to and tunings do make a difference, so it's a great balance. It just feels fun. You also have a huge amount of ways to customise your vehicles if you need a helping hand in some areas.

There are only two negatives I can think of. The first is the sheer number of CPU avatars in offline mode. They are everywhere and tend to get in the way. Unlike other 'real life' players they aren't ghosted out to prevent collisions. The other negative is the drift club aspect which I just didn't get along with. I feel the drift zones punish you too harshly whereas the other types of race/zone are more forgiving of mistakes. It's an odd contrast. They remind me of the Kudos challenges in Project Gotham Racing. However, unlike PGR (iirc) Horizon doesn't force you to do them, so I can't criticise it too harshly as maybe I'll get better at them as time goes on.

In short, I've been playing it non-stop for nearly two weeks and I've enjoyed every minute. I've got Horizons 3 downloading as we speak and looking into Forza 7 and Dirt Rally 2.0. I'm even eyeing a wheel :o

Picross 3D Round 2

I love picross, and Picross 3D on the DS was a great evolution from the original 2d puzzles. However, I kept getting stuck, and the logic eluded me until I took a frustrated guess, often wrong. I gave up, despite enjoying it.

Picross 3D Round 2 for the 3DS seems to be available on discount pretty much everywhere for the past few months, so I though I'd have a go, even though I was sure I'd run into problems mid-game as the difficulty started to run above my skill.

However, thanks to a new 'give me a clue' hint method, which shows you a line that you can paint, mark or chip away at (without telling you which blocks they are), I was able to work my way through the whole game, completing every puzzle with Rainbow (highest reward) jewel. Incredibly satisfying and I haven't played anything else until now... I just finished the last level 5 mins ago.

If I have any negative points at all, it would be that it's a little two easy to set the style to the wrong 'mode' with the face buttons (you mark or paint in two colours, and chip, all with the stylus and one of 4 face buttons or the shoulder button). Too often I would be deep in a puzzle solve and would accidently have the stylus in the wrong colour 'mode'. E.g. despite it being an easy move such as marking an orange block in an orange only row, I'd still be in 'blue' mode from my last activity, and forget to switch finger position. A 'you're being a twat' message when such an obvious mistake is being made would be a help. Alternatively, a direct interface to my brain would be useful for Picross 3D round 3.

So just short of a perfect mark from me due to small control issues.

9/10

Edit: I also missed the little animations after completing each puzzle. :(

The above post is followed by a winky, smiley or facepalm as appropriate.

Super Mario Maker 2 9/10 - I prefer the 100 Mario challenge to the Endless mode, miss the amiibo costumes, and find making courses on Switch a touch cumbersome, but this is a great sequel overall.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil 7/10 - The map marker the remaster has added improves this game dramatically. Was nice to beat it legit for the first time, brought back a fair few memories from my N64 childhood. Cerebral Bore is the best FPS weapon for sure.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - 8.5/10. Not quite finished yet as I’ve got the DLC chapter and a couple of achievements to mop up, but I’ve completed the game on the hardest setting without killing anyone so that’s good.

Loved this, very atmospheric and the story was quite gripping. Stealth mechanics were strong and worked well with the game, and I enjoyed the satisfaction of getting past a group of enemies without being spotted. Will move on to Mankind Divided at some stage.

What did you choose to do for the ending?

The only correct answer is to self-destruct everything

I wanted to do that because it’s obviously the right decision but didn’t want Adam to pelt it, so I went with the unedited footage.

The multiple endings implementation is so weak in Human Revolution - a room with a button to press for each ending basically!

That was so disappointing after a pretty strong game. I've had the sequel for years but never played it - primarily because my computer isn't set up for keyboard and mouse gaming and I want to experience it that way. Really would like to get around to it at some point, though.

I played both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided on PC - the first using KB/M and the second using a 360 controller. I prefer keyboard and mouse definitely but I was surprised at how well the controller worked after a short while

It's very heavy-handed and gamified but I really like it to be honest - it's very memorable to me as a choice. It's definitely the fourth option that makes it though - it's basically a rejection of the choice itself, which works on multiple levels.

Rygar 6/10 - Had a decent enough time with this NES adventure game. I think the NES Works video I saw on YouTube prepared me for the slightly less straightforward steps sometimes required to progress.

The Immortal 6/10 - An isometric adventure game that loves to kill you. I had a good time making my way through with trial and error, it's not as hard as it lets on. Plus it looks fairly unique for a NES game.

I thought it was implemented fine and ties the themes of the game together quite well. Essentially the game is asking if you have the right to make the decisions that you've been fighting to stop various factions from making. I don't think you do, so the right thing to do is not to make the choice. But still.

Obviously I made a save and went through all four endings for the achievement, but the "right" one is to destroy Panchaea.

Far Cry 3 - 6/10

Definitely felt like this should have ended much early than it did. The game was technical mess on Xbox One. It was also very janky, small drops killing you for no reason, weird feeling aiming.

I have two other games from this series on my backlog (4 and Primal). I hope they are better.

These last few weeks I’ve been mostly playing & finishing in my Playstation 3 Backlog Of DoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOom:

Castle of Illusion

Played the Megadrive version a few centuries ago & never finished it because it was hard at the time. Great fun, visually striking colours (especially the sugar / sweetie level). I imagine this got gooseberry fool on because it’s not Mario or something. Also the voice actress for the witch was strawberry floating A. Like legit good.

Cel Damage

I’ve felt more excitement watching The Matrix sequels.
I liked the cel shade graphics. Well yeah. That’s all I have to say about that.

Costume Quest 2

Gimme ya sweets you little gooseberry fools. Fun game but not much changed since the first one. Candy Corn is the MVP.

Critter Crunch

Couldn’t finish it to 100% as it requires you to be lucky. I hate gooseberry fool like that in games. Roll of the dice. Get lucky or get strawberry floated. Good game though.

Crysis

Well well well, look at what we have here. Can it run Crysis?. Yes it can you guys. Now I don’t know what sort of lying arseholes are out there saying that it looked amazing on the PS3 but it really doesn’t. The strawberry float where those people on?.
I imagine it looks shite on PS3 due to hardware limitations. Not a bad game but once you get into the alien volcano / ship it didn’t feel anything special.

Cuboid
Roll a cuboid around a maze of wooden planks to the end of the level while avoiding traps & falls. Fun until the professional levels.

DeathSpank & DeathSpank : Thongs Of Virtue

Loved the art style, simple combat & humour. Will do The Baconing later this year.

Doom Classic Complete

Had a whale of a time mowing down demons, some great level designs aswell. I can’t remember which ones they where in but three of my favourites: you where in a demon city. A huge city. The other you are in a tomb, you have to make your way down only to get ambushed by 6 million Imps & a Cyber Demon. I can remember the name of this one: it was called Mount Pain. Huuuuuuuuuuge level. Shame there isn’t a level select or at least not that I’m aware of.

Duke Nukem 3D : Megaton Edition

Was ok. But felt it got better when I got to “Duke it out in D.C” .

Eat Them!

Was struggling but I managed to do it. Basically : Destroy buildings, eat humans, rob a bank do a checkpoint race & more. Earn medals to earn better items to improve your monster.

& finally tonight I went back to the nightmare that is Echochrome

I strawberry floating hate this game, I hate it with a strawberry floating passion. You have to move the camera about for the Tory creature that you control so that it will make a path so that you can pick up a Tory boy. Pick a few up to finish a level.
I don’t know who green lit this music but I gooseberry fool you not: this is the music that you would have playing if you where going to torture someone to death. I imagine this is the sort of music the Tories listen to.

I won’t finish this game though, I’ve been playing it for a few hours & I just can’t with this game.

Well that’s my PS3 backlog up to date: in the next few weeks I will be mostly playing:
Far Cry Classic & Blood Dragon, Fez, Flow :| , Goat Stimulator, Hell Yeah! Wrath of the white rabbit, Hotline Miami 1 & 2 & Infamous : Festival Of Blood.

Come fight death with me

Operation Logic Bomb 4/10 - Incredibly bland top down SNES shooter. A good chunk of the third party games making it to the Switch SNES Online service seem to be inferior versions of the stuff they can't seem to license.

Wild Guns 8/10 - But then you have Wild Guns which is great fun. A wild west shooter with robots.
