Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition - Xbox 360

This is the start of my run on console exclusives/"AAA" games that i missed the first time around. Haven't played Halo in years, the nostalgia kicked in and it all came back. The visual upgrade was well done, improving the visual quality and style without changing too much. Saying that, the framerate can tank sometimes and textures can be slow to load, but its still a classic thats great to play after over 10 years. On to Halo 2 next, after which it'll all be new to me, didn't have a 360 when 3-4 etc came out.

9/10

Mega Man V 8/10 Might be my fave after II. Love the different level styles this time round, though the castle stages at the end always drag on too long I find.

Donkey Kong Land 6/10 One of my favourite games as a kid, though going back shows it ain't all that. The Temple music in the game is still amazing though, and thanks to my new gaming skills I reached the end this time too.

Donkey Kong Land had some of the most intrusive backgrounds in a platformer game. There were times you couldn't make out stuff happening in the foreground. Not helped by the gameboy screen.

Yeah, I never got past World 3 when I was younger due to the horrid looking bumper platform level. And there were times I wasn't sure what was a platform or a pit in the skyscraper levels at the end.

I have a fond memory of playing the game with a torch when we had a blackout back when I was 7. Feels bad when you go back and the magic is no longer there.

Mortal Kombat X story mode 7/10

Shorter and less varied than story in MK9 but less frustrating. I enjoyed it for what it is, though disappointing they didn't include more of the new characters, too much focus on the original characters. It was nice they moved the story on rather than re tell the same tournament plot again.

The gameplay is great, as someone who loves the idea of fighters but lacks any skill for online play, the variety of options for solo play are great. I wish more games would cater for those who enjoy offline solo. Towers, survival, story etc.

If the likes of street fighter and tekken had story modes like this I'd be there in an instant.

Game 31: Fez

Strange one, this. While it looks and sounds great, and it doesn't really do anything wrong, I can't say I had a lot of fun with it. I finished it with 28 gold cubes and 4 anti-cubes and I felt that, for a puzzle-platformer, there was very little puzzling or platforming involved. While the "no death" mechanic felt too lenient by putting you right at the platform you fell off of, I certainly would have thought restarting the area would have been too punishing due to Gomez's slow movement. Working out what to do to reach the various cubes and cube bits was rarely anything other than, "rotate to this perspective", and I couldn't help but feel the game was confidently expecting me to be more impressed with the perspective mechanic than I actually was. However, I do appreciate that I only skimmed the surface. I only got half of the available cubes by nearly exhausting what I could find, and if you have the time to sit and decipher a new alphabet or whatever I'm sure there's loads of stuff to solve, but I simply couldn't be bothered doing all that.

Kick & Fennick

Working through the backlog of PS+ titles on my Vita and I came across this little gem, I couldnt put it down and worked my way through it over the weekend and finished it off last night. Its not the longest game in the world nor is it the hardest but its better for it. The basic mechanic is you have a big gun, point it forward to shoot things, point it back to get propelled into the air and you get 2 shots before you have to touch ground again. Its simple stuff and it has a bit of a 2D portal vibe about it as you explore a derelict research lab. I only actually "died" twice due to their being a generous retry limit that can be topped up by collecting energy orbs. In a nutshell if you fall to your death or get electrocuted your robot buddy will warp you back to the last bit of firm ground you were on, but he eventually runs out of energy and cant save you any more. Its a good way to let players make mistakes but punish them for crappy play, especially since the punishment for death is returning to the last checkpoint and these are reasonably generous, you never lose more than a minute or two of progress.

all you really need to do is move from the start of the level to the end, there are a couple of side paths to take to gather more energy orbs, these apparently unlock costumes but I never actually saw any of these or changed into them, oh well. Theres only a small handful of enemies in each level, and all are easily dispatched with the unlimited ammo gun you wield, the real danger comes from the electricity that is everywhere. Later levels introduce water and magnets but a little bit of thinking and perseverance sees you through everything in little time. The end of each chapter culminates in a boss fight against an unkillable giant robot dog. These mechanics of each fight are different to the last and serve as a nice way to change the pace and get you using the gun in a (slightly) different way.

Overall I really enjoyed it and if you have a Vita with PS+ then check it out, its a good way to spend a couple of evenings.

The Witcher 2

It's very good, but starting to show it's age. It's only this year that I managed to get past Chapter 1. It's definitely a game that peaks in the middle, though. Chapter 3 was pretty crap compared to Chapter 2 and Chapter 1 probably has some of the best side missions. I couldn't be bothered with anything in chapter 3 except the main plot and one or two of the side missions.

I expect great things from the Witcher 3.

8/10.

BioShock - 9/10

+ Looks nice, with some lovely water effects
+ Great atmosphere
+ I like the 50s vibe
+ Interesting concept
+ Good plot

- Not a big fan of the plasmids
- Couple of annoying design decisions, particularly around reloading and first aid kits

Kirby's Pinball Land 6/10 Like Revenge of the Gator but with more, more, more. But I prefer the simplicity of Gator.

Witcher 3 - 9/10

Bloody lovely, with excellent writing (for a video game), and memorable characters. One point off for the replayability factor, as it's a hell of a long journey to go through again, but one which I've no doubt I'll do some time soon.

Donkey Kong Land 2 7/10 Big improvement on the first, but riffs on Country 2 too heavily. I liked the unique worlds in the first DKL.

Golf (Game Boy) 6/10 Have fond memories of this, and it's still fun. Though if you're after a retro golf game on the 3DS eshop, you might as well go for NES Tournament Golf.

Bionic Commando (Game Boy) 7/10 Fun chunky version of the NES game. Sometimes bastard hard.

Mega Man VI 6/10 The new transformations are cool, and branching paths adds a little, but this feels like one Mega Man too many. The level design has nothing on V. Probably try the Game Boy Mega Man titles next...

The Last of Us (Grounded difficulty) - My third time through the game and it just keeps getting better. I cleared the Winter and Spring sections today and things went surprisingly smoothly. There were a couple of areas that I thought might be difficult (the beginning of the Winter section), but none of them took an inordinate amount of time. Overall, once you get used to the lack of HUD and having to monitor your ammo level, it's not that much more difficult than Survivor difficulty.

I can't choose between them but it's a toss up between this and Mario 64 as my favourite game of all time.

Donkey Kong Land III 8/10 Best in the Game Boy trilogy, had so much fun with this as a kid, and still did when I replayed it this week.

Mario's Picross 7/10 It's Picross, which means its addictive and fun, but the e series on the 3DS eshop are probably worth choosing over this one.

Toybox Turbos - PC

So Codemasters made Micro Machines by any other name - still pretty much the same game, although I would have liked proper boats or something to differentiate. Still the same iconic track locations; breakfast table, pool table, school desks etc.

Micro machines/10

Castlevania II Simon's Quest 6/10 Not as bad as I was led to believe, but I guess save states helped a long way in removing the tedium.

Metroid II Return of Samus 7/0 Couldn't beat this as a kid, but this time round I got through it pretty quick. I quite like the way the game is structure; not as open ended as Metroid, but a lot more focus. Last boss was a real bitch.

Castlevania III Dracula's Curse 6/10 The first is the best of the NES trilogy, but this could have upped it if it wasn't so unfairly hard. Last boss was a nightmare!

Game 32: Batman: Arkham Origins
Image
In preparation for Arkham Knight, I set my other games I had on the go to one side and worked my way through this. I had a lot of fun with it, and the combat was as great as ever. The collectible stuff, I largely ignored. I got all the stuff in the first area at the start of the game, but after that I just couldn't be bothered. I'm glad, though, because I didn't want to burn out on it before AK. The story was garbage and Bruce Wayne is an asshole. I actually wanted Batman to get the gooseberry fool kicked out of him in the final acts, so good job on that, Splash Damage. I'm someone who preferred Asylum to City, and this wasn't as good as the latter, so it's the worst of last gen's Batman games, as most people would tell you. However, being the worst Batman game doesn't make it a bad game. It was actually very good, it's just in unflattering company.

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time on PS3. I'm rather fond of the Sly Cooper series and this was more of the same, while not as good as the 1st or 2nd games it was still very enjoyable. I'm not sure I liked the ending but it does leave it wide open for a 5th game in the series at some point. 7/10
