Half Life Alyx

Maybe the best game ever? Certainly a revolutionary experience that I'll never forget.

Shin Megami Tensei V - Switch - 9/10

After and 60 hours I've finished the game. Really enjoyed it too. Still got more endings to unlock but I'm happy to have a break for now and play something else.

Turn based combat and demon designs are excellent and the soundtrack is well done. I found a few bits dragged but overall it's a excellent switch game.

Mafia: Definitive Edition - 9/10

Great story, great characters and a world that immerses you in times gone by is generally what I've loved about this series over the last decade and I'd love to see it continue.

I was however disappointed by the lack of radio stations in this (only 2!), the inability to ride the trams, the fact I couldn't board the train, let alone the platform - these things matter to me damn it - and some minor technical shortcomings, carried over from the engine used in Mafia 3, but even so I still feel like giving this a 9 in light of how I think Hanger 13 have improved.

Dead Space - 8/10

+ Looks good, especially the lighting and shadows
+ Good level design
+ Good structure to the chapters
+ Very atmospheric
+ Upgrade system works well
+ Enemy design

- Plot is rubbish
- Some of the 'scares'/set pieces are pretty telegraphed and you can see them coming a mile off
- The map is mostly useless, and the whole interface of your objectives/inventory/map doesn't really work. I can see what they were going for, but it doesn't work very well

It took me three attempts to get into this I think, but on the third go it finally clicked and I really enjoyed it. I liked the pace of progression and returning to the train to move onto the next chapter, and how that fed into exploring different parts of the ship. I wouldn't say it's particularly scary, but it's very atmospheric. I think my main gripe is with the plot. It should've been much simpler and pared back, not full of clichés and tropes. Also, telling the story primarily through text/audio logs or video comms is always a bit annoying, but especially when the game decides that the perfect time to tell you about your next objective is in the middle of you fighting off a horde of necromorphs, so you just end up missing the story or reason for your next objective. I rarely go back and play a game again, but I might do here, given its relatively short length, and I only played through using the default weapon, so I haven't tried any of the other guns in the game. Might be a good excuse to go through again. Glad I stuck with it though!

Super Mario 64. (beaten Bowser)

I never really liked or played this at the time.

The control over 2d Mario was so precise that I felt this was very fiddly. The fact it was 3d didn't make up for that for me. I also felt the absence of power Mushrooms and the absence of jumping on enemies meant it didn't even feel like a Mario game. I have similar feelings towards Zelda ALTTP and OoT.

I did play and enjoy Sunshine so when they announced Mario 3D All Stars it prompted me to get a Switch lite. I also felt that competing this should be on a gaming bucket list.

I started this soon after that was released, wanted to play them in order, and played it a lot up to and around Christmas last year. Picked it up again recently with the aim of finishing it soon I could move onto Sunshine this Christmas. In was on 64 stars so only needes a few more. Got them on my first sitting but couldn't beat Bowser. Had another go today and did.

Even though the camera would be considered far worse by today's standards I was actually more forgiving of it than I was at the time.

Overall I enjoyed it, I'd give it a 7,and can see why people like it so much. That said, its still Super Mario World for me. (I've still yet to play Galaxy or Odyssey.)

Ghost of Tsushima 8.5/10
I really enjoyed my time in Tsushima; its samurai period setting and story, the journey through its many beautiful environments and its wonderful duels. However, I did have the odd niggle; the sprawling map and the repetitive missions led to early burnout (by end of Act 1). Though, it mostly recovered in its next Acts with the enhanced combat (due to skill tree upgrades) and more intricate fighting mechanics with tougher opponents. All in all, it's a great game, but i'll need a break before discovering the Iki DLC. BTW, it was fairly easy to platinum, only needed to look up the last couple.

Pokemon Shining Pearl 7/10

its still that same old pokemon formula that i love but its too loyal a remake. platinum was the better game so leaving out its content was a shame and it really reminded me why gen 5 felt like a breath of fresh air at the time.

Zombie Driver HD - 4/10

+ Running over zombies and shooting them is fun
+ Decent range of weapons, upgrades, and vehicles
+ Manages to come up with a couple of interesting objectives, given the limitations of the gameplay

- Drags on for far, far too long
- Dodgy controls at times
- Paper-thin story, and the storytelling is poor
- Full of spelling mistakes

An okay game that should've been about 3-4 hours long, but somehow ended up taking me 10 hours to complete. I've been chipping away at it for what feels like years. Honestly needed about 10 missions at most, but it has strawberry floating 30, and it's just so unnecessary. So many games seem to feel like they have to be way longer than they need to be, and this is just another example of that.

Metroid Dread (NSW)

Well designed and with very challenging bosses. Certainly one of the harder games I have played in recent times, but very rewarding when I finished it.
Looks great, but long-ish loading times between areas (maybe i'm just spoilt by next gen).
Never really got lost - a bonus for me. Run time felt perfect.
A lot of controls to manage - even on the pro controller things can get quite cramped.
End credits music is oddly bad.
Liked it quite a lot, but not as much as Ori and the Will of the Wisps (which I played on Xbox fwiw), which is still the high bar for me.

Final Fantasy VII Remake DLC. Was okay, personally I liked what they did with Yuffie and her character however, most of the mission was battle after battle in a boring surrounding. Don't get me started on Deepground or the bit right at the end.

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [109h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Devizes Half (April), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

It's been a revelation and I'm going to continue loving it for the rest of my life! I'm really excited to start Skyrim VR but I think I'll play Walking Dead S&S next. :D

As such a famous game, it feels amazing to re-visit it in VR; definitely worth experiencing.

That does look good but also pretty scary; best have a spare pair of trousers ready!

Spider-Man Miles Morales (PS5)

I have no love for any of the Marvel franchises, but picked it up in Tesco for £15.

What a game! Great fun mechanics and perfect game length for something of this type. Loved the Xmas setting too, it felt really cosy. Stunning game as well.

Only knock against it was that it was too easy even in the hardest difficulty setting (until you finish the game).

Even 100% the map because it was so much fun just swinging around.

Kingdom Hearts 3 - PlayStation 5

Finished this today, it took almost 30 hours and I enjoyed pretty much all of that. Towards the end it's just boss battle after boss battle but I can't fault the production values and gameplay.

Infinite Undiscovery - 7/10

+ Decent visuals
+ Some good music
+ Doesn't outstay its welcome
+ Fairly original/interesting plot

- Whiny, annoying characters
- Awful writing
- Too many cut scenes, and too many of them that drag on for way too long (15-20 mins)
- Combat's pretty basic and repetitive
- Several mechanics that are either under-used, or just not needed at all
- Feel rushed

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but - plot aside - it's a pretty by-the-numbers JRPG. It's a Tri-Ace game, so the writing is awful, the characters are annoying, the cut scenes are unbearably long, and it's full of all JRPG cliches imaginable, but the game has an interesting premise, and it moves along at a decent enough pace to not feel like you're bogged down. I can't help but feel that the game was rushed though, as some parts of it aren't voiced, some of the mechanics like the flute playing, the crafting, and the 'connect' thing are barely used, and the ending felt rushed too. With the premise and some of the other ideas it could've been really good, but ends up feeling like a missed opportunity, albeit still a fairly enjoyable one.

Miles Morales - 8/10

Enjoyed this a lot. It didn't have the impact of the first Spider-man game but webslinging around the place was still a lot of fun as were the new venom powers. I enjoyed the Christmas setting and Miles is a good character. Much shorter than the first but that was fine. Plot was a little meh for me but I'm looking forward to both Spider-men being in the next PS5 game. My only concern is, will New York be feeling a bit stale by then?
