Days Gone:
Finally finished the main story of Days Gone. God, what a slog of a game! Soooooo long, way longer than it needed to. Game could have been 1/3 the size and I'd still leave satisfied. Didn't help it that the story doesn't carry the game, it was awful. There were no characters that were interesting to me, and the dialogue was utter gooseberry fool. At least the base gameplay was still fun, killing zombies, hordes, and clearing enemy camps. The world was interesting and well realized. Combat and gunplay were good enough.

7/10.

Welcome! I've played a good few hours of Days Gone but have not got very far yet. I wouldn't say the characters are bad, but they're definitely unlikable. The main character is not a nice person and lives by a very questionable code - but that at least justifies the gameplay of murdering so many people (or selling them into slavery)!

Spiderman PS4: 9/10

Had zero hype for this during its marketing as it just looked like another Insomnia Prototype alike, but with Spiderman. In the end, I think I actually enjoyed it more than God of War.

It's an absolutely shameless ripoff of the Arkham model, from the combat mechanics to the overall structure of the game to the flow of the narrative itself but it somehow manages to do its own thing too. This is almost all down to the writing which is... Excellent. In fact, the story it tells is better than any of the big screen adaptations and this Peter is immediately my favourite; not as hopelessly naive as the Holland version, not as creepy as the Maguire version and a million miles from the arsehole Garfield try.

The movement is a joy, the abilities interesting and the constant unlocks perfectly paced. The only criticisms are that it does stick too close to the Batman games in its structure. Hopefully the next game will spread its wings somewhat.

I love that you can do the finger guns in the game though. Considering you can also run around wearing just your boxers and a mask, I would argue the combination is creepier ;)

Ok, not that one.

Don't have the patience to unlock that suit, but walking around was really great. The version of New York Insomnia has created is fantastic, on the level of a GTA for sure.

They put a lot of effort into the behaviour of NPCs on the ground, which is weird and impressive when you can spend all your time swinging around not seeing it.

It probably benefits from that infrequency of interaction though, I don't think it takes too long until you see all the variations in behaviour and it becomes obviously a game.

Also on general world design, my biggest complaint with the game on an immersion level (but one of its most memorable quirks) is the impossible windows/interiors of buildings. I found that to be a near-constant amusement that also pulled me out the game, when I'd always see inside doors on outside corners or obvious flat textures swapping inconsistently as you move from one side to another.

I think GTAV still has Spiderman easily beat considering both its consistency in detail, and the range of possible interactions with and behaviours of NPCs.

On the other hand however, you have a density of traffic and civilians that simply wouldn't be feasible in a GTA game for playability reasons.

You're right in that it's not a GTA level of detail they're employing, but it still felt like a real place, something that most open world games really struggle with still.

I dug out my SNES Classic Mini (or whatever it is called) and decided to give Starfox 2 another shot.

Completed it on easy, reasonably fun - once you understand that this is not Starfox as we know it, it's basically small episodic battles without being guided through much of a plot like the on-rails levels of the other games- certainly on the easy setting.

I have to admit is purely 16-bit nostalgia and the game just doesn't/can't give an 3d gameplay experience anything like the kind of thing we have now, let alone just the next-gen back then (N64). If you weren't gaming at the time that Starfox came out, you'll just see a jerky framerate and barely recognisable polygon shapes.

I put myself back in mid-90's mode and passed a fun 30 mins or so with it. But I'd not play it over any other later games in the series, even the Wii U one with the shonky controls.

I can't really grade it as it just sits on a different scale to modern gaming.

I would give a proper sequel to StarFox.

The N64 version feels like a remake of the SNES version, but with additional vehicles.

I'd say Star Fox Zero but...

Play Starlink instead

Dragon Quest on iOS.

I really enjoyed this.

Considering it’s one of the earliest JRPGs this still holds up really well. Granted this is a port of the SNES version which is far less of a grind than the NES original and while the gameplay/story may be very basic (battle monsters, gather the artefacts, rescue the princess, defeat the villain) the foundations of what JRPGs would soon become are all here.

At the very least a fun distraction on my daily commute 10/10

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus - PS4

What a strange, bizarre and stunning game/series. This one has some neat features and continues the tale from the previous game. The story does some pretty wild things and is full of stuff i genuinely did not expect, and despite frau engel goading you and being really evil all the way, the end felt a bit muted, lacking a lot of the bombast of the rest of the journey. I get that it was a more personal ending to this particular arc, however it didn't quite sit with me for some reason.

Loads was made of the 60s setting, but most of it was spent in metallic corridors without much to make them stand out apart from the swastikas all over the place.

Its definitely worth playing (but would make less sense without playing the previous game first); its visually excellent, with fast, meaty gunplay, no "recurrent user spending" or "surprise mechanics" to artificially draw the thing out and a story that is trashy yet touching.

Got this now. I don't like the first one so far :slol:

Actually no, I do quite like it, it's rather charming. But it's a bit clumsy at times, with the odd obscure puzzle. Love the theme tune and astheics though.

You can definitely see how Kamiko is the development of this

 Glad it wasn't the worst recommendation on my part then at least!

It's definitely an aquired taste in genre, but yes I think the aesthetics have an obvious retro appeal with the added bonus of showing a clear evolution into the more mainstream kamiko. It's definitely charming.

If you unlock Fairune Blast (think you need to beat both main games) that's a single level vertical shmup with the characters from kamiko, which is kinda cool.

Journey - 9/10

Unquestionably the best of its genre (walking game with atmospheric storytelling). Only encountered one other person on my Journey though. Would have loved to see more.

Shadow of the Colossus - 9/10

Superb. No game has ever been more epic. Loses a mark for very dodgy controls/camera at times causing undue frustration.

Ape Out - 7.5/10

Decent little time killer that doesn't overstay its welcome and finds respectable amount of variety in a limited gameplay mechanic. Clearly a game to be replayed.

The Last of Us Remastered - 9/10

This has been sat near the top of my pile of shame for a while now. I did play a good chunk of the PS3 original but it didn't quite grab me at the time, I recall finding the combat really frustrating and in the end I gave up on it.

Decided that with the sequel looming I should really give it another go via the remastered version. Honestly, so glad I did - I already knew the story telling was good as I'd seen a chunk of that but I hadn't even got close to the best parts yet, I'm a big fan of the Uncharted series but Naughty Dog really stepped up a level here and I loved how they used many common elements from post-apocalyptic/zombie movies but did enough of their own things to keep it fresh. Joel and Ellie's relationship and the way it developed was brilliantly told and completely believable.

On the gameplay front, I enjoyed the combat far more this time around. I think last time around I was trying to play it like Uncharted, going in all gung ho and dying quite quickly. During this play through I quickly realised that approach generally doesn't work so well here and that I had to get over the 'kill everything' mentality that is the norm in most games. Once I'd done that I found myself managing to deal with the game much more effectively, picking my battles and finding strategies for dealing with big groups. Clickers being able to kill you in one hit was still definitely annoying but generally they were only able to do that because I'd messed up in the first place. The good checkpointing saved it from being frustrating if I did go wrong and honestly, I'm not sure why this was a deal breaker for me when I first played it.

Got to say it's amazing how great this still looks visually, even though it's been remastered it's still fundamentally a PS3 game but I was frequently impressed with the visuals, especially in the larger outdoor areas.

Once I'd done I also played 'Left Behind' which I would also include under my 9/10 rating. It was a great little story which really filled some gaps in the existing story and I loved how it flitted between the flashback scenes and the scenes from the main story. Generally it was more of the same but one thing I really enjoyed, which I don't recall ever happening in the main game, was having areas where you had to deal with both infected and enemy soldiers. I really enjoyed being able to get them to fight each other by alerting them both and then watching chaos descend, before picking off anybody who had survived. It added another layer of strategy to combat and I hope we see some more of it during the sequel.

Overall, a bloody good game and I'm glad I finally went back to it!

Just finished A Night in the Woods.

I think it's brilliantly written, with many of the conversations making me think, or laugh out loud. Mae, the main character, is a sort of charming brat but all of the characters have a personality that they can get across in a few lines.

Some of this deals with issues like depression and anxiety, illnesses which are often misunderstood, and I think this game makes it all feel more human. Touch wood, I've not suffered with those myself so far, but some important people close to me have, and I think they capture some of the thoughts and ways of thinking brilliantly.

If that all sounds a bit worthy, it's not; most importantly, you can relate to all of the characters and see bits of yourself in them too. And some of it is genuinely funny / thought provoking. I'm struggling to think of a better written game.

Also, I loved the tinkling melancholic soundtrack. And the expressive cartoon style. Also, the games within the game (like the rhythm action music game) were genuinely diverting.

Saying all that, there's not so much actual 'game' here; it's more of an experience (well, other than the mini games referred to above). Nothing wrong in that, but I did get a bit bored at times backtracking or wondering what to do next. It's not really that hard, so that's on me. It's just at times I felt like it would be more fun sitting back and watching a well written cartoon play out than actually playing it.

8/10 feels like a slightly harsh score for something I'd really recommend, but there you are. Life is cruel.

Steamworld Heist - Having bounced off of this previously when trying to play on PS4 I finally played and completed it on Switch. Overall I rather enjoyed it. I liked experimenting with the different character powers and loadouts to figure out which combinations were best for different situations. It's not perfect and there were frustrations with some of the randomly generated levels, but overall it was good fun and a decent challenge. 8/10

God of War: Ghost of Sparta HD (PS3)

This is a decent GoW game that adds to Kratos' story, has some great mechanics and looks amazing considering its a polished PSP game. The plot loses its way a bit in the middle but comes together nicely at the end.

Robocop vs The Terminator on Sega Master System. I had this as a kid but never managed to beat it, I always got to Skynet and ended up losing all my lives but finally (while streaming no less) I've got this game beat. Considering the limited hardware it's a fun and very faithful adaptation of it's Mega Drive based big brother. Definitely worth checking out 7/10
