Dead Cells - 9/10

This may be the first rougelike I've ever played, but I can fully understand why people claim it is the best in the genre.

This is categorically not a Metroidvania though - but it is a first class, satisfying and utterly addicting game that I will keep going back to.

Beat the final boss after 65 runs and seven deaths against him. Feel good man :datass:

Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey - 7/10

+ I like the art style
+ Some good bits of music
+ Variety and challenge
+ Doesn't outstay its welcome

- For all the variety, it can feel samey
- Some inconsistencies in the damage model

Enjoyed this. Took me just under 7 hours to complete every stage and then about 3 hours more to do all the stars. Good to dip in and out of when you have a spare 20 minutes, but suits longer sessions (this is when it gets samey though, or it did for me).

Shadow of the Tomb Raider-PS4-First completion of the year and it's a banger. Best of the trilogy IMO. It's so much better because it doesn't rely on the combat, unlike ROTR. There's so much to do, with side missions to find and complete, Crypts to solve, a lot more tombs to raid and treasure to find. I finished the game with 93% completion and I think I'll get that to 100% over the coming months as I bought the Croft edition which has a new tomb every month and there's 5 more to come so a good reason to go back to it.

God of War: Chains of Olympus HD (PS3)

I'm going through the god of war games to get to the new one and after the ascension disc didn't work this is the first one i'm completed of this run. Its very much by the numbers god of war but does some interesting things as a prequel. I didn't technically finish the game as the final boss is prefaced by an unskippable cutscene every time you restart it and apparently normal difficulty is too much for me these days, so after an hour or so i cut my losses and watched the end on youtube.

Going forward i'll stick to easy i think, especially as you can't change difficulty once you start and i have nothing to prove to anyone about being a 'real gamer' or any of that nonsense.

Batman Arkham Trilogy

I played Arkham Asylum not long after it had come out for the 360. I really enjoyed it and always intended to replay it on hard.

I tried Arkham Knight some time in 2017 but dropped it pretty soon. I remember thinking the combat seem a lot more complicated now. I like to finish all my games however so always intended to give it another ago.

Last August when browsing one of the sales I notice the Return to Arkham pack. I didn't realise they had done re-masters. I snapped it up with my thought process being that I could now replay Asylum on hard, then onto City (which I'd never played) and then give Knight another ago and by this point I'd be re-acquainted with the gameplay.

Asylum (Hard) - I enjoyed this just as much as I did the first time around. 9

City (Hard) - Initially I was thinking this wasn't as good as Asylum. It seemed as if it had needlessly over-complicated things. Wasn't sure about the open world approach (which was another thing that had put me off Knight). Thought the Electric Charge gun gadget was a bit pointless. However by the end of it I loved it so much that I immediately replayed on NG+. I loved the Catwomen bits, the range of enemies that were involved, the way the combat had been expanded. I would also give this a 9. I think comparing Asylum to City is a bit like comparing Alien to Aliens. Both very good, but slightly different and what you prefer is down personal preference. (I'm Aliens by the way)

Knight (Normal) - Like City I again initially thought some of the changes were needless. But unlike City by the end of it there were still things about it that irritated me. I think there was too much of a switch to the bad guys having guns in this one. The sentry guns and turrets were a pain. I've seen lots of people mention the batmobile. I thought it was fine to use to travel round the map and even to solve some of the puzzles but the combat sections god-damn awful. Does anyone like them? The Arkham Knight bad guy is not a patch on the Joker, or any of the other more traditional bad guys (I thought they way the kept the Joker involved in the story was fantastic). Unlike the Electric charge gun introduced in City even by the end of Knight I still thought the Voice Imitator gadget was frivolous. The grappling seemed a lot more hit and miss. I lost count of the amount of times I ended up grappling to somewhere I did not intend to. There's still a lot of good things in it, I just think the additions are to its detriment. 8

Star Wars Racer Revenge (PS4)

This was extremely short and easy. I finished the tournament mode in under 2 hours and have no intention of playing through it with other characters. The tracks are visually cluttered and i ended up driving mainly from looking at the minimap as it was much easier to figure out where i was supposed to be going. I would rather have gone back to play the original instead which was also pretty easy, but had more interesting mechanics.

Ys - The Oath in Felghana - 8/10

Really solid game. Tight, focused, great boss battles, wonderful soundtrack. I really enjoyed it.

Detroit Become Human PS4

Really enjoyed this, have actually gone straight back in to it for a second play-through to see how different thinks could be (it would appear the answer is "quite different").

I really enjoyed the performances by all the actors, and was amazed at how well it all held together.

Strongly recommend it if you can pick it up on sale (i paid £15), at full price it comes down to how many hours you expect to get out of a game. I guess the main story was a good 10-12 hours, and i'm guessing my 2nd run will probably add another 6 hours to that.

Definitely my favourite of the 3 QD games available on PS4 (Detroit>Heavy Rain>Beyond).

I have to admit I was surprised how much I enjoyed Detroit too. As you say, the actors and presentation really do a good job of drawing you into the intertwining stories.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole (Switch) - 7.5/10

A very bingeable turn based RPG which turns a slow start into a really engaging season length version of the show.

The game crashed on me 3 times in total, despite the patches that have been released since launch, forcing me to repeat some lengthy sections. Also framerate drops become more common in the second half.

The game does an excellent job at encouraging you to alternate between party members, whilst also allowing you to stick with favourites.

I doubt I'll ever replay it, but it was around 25 hours of value for the now £20ish pricepoint, so a pretty good ROI.

Gravity Rush 2

A difficult one to score because at its best its a very good game, perhaps an 8/10. Shifting gravity is a fun way of exploring the world and some of the missions are very enjoyable with some big, crazy battles.

However when the game is bad, it's pretty terrible. The game has a knack of drawing out missions far longer than it should, so any fun that there might have been in an activity quickly gets sucked out of it. The last chapter in particular is truly awful for this and had a few moments where I almost just gave up on the game entirely.

Overall, I'll give it a 6/10. Couldn't give it any higher with its many significant flaws.

Persona 5

It has its faults but I can't score it anything other than a 10, with the caveat that nothing is perfect and those faults don't detract from my overall experience of the game. Any game that is possible of sucking 110 hours out of me, at 43 years of age and with the time constraints that come with that, is pretty special and I would love a sequel with the same characters.

Have you played P4G? And if so, how did you find it compared?

I completed P4G last year and loved it. I'm 38, so finding games that capture my attention for as long as this did (80 hours) is, as you put it, pretty special. Would be interested to hear your opinion.

Is that the one that was only released on the Vita, or was it available on other platforms? I did, very briefly, own a Vita but it was an impulse buy, swiftly followed by some hefty buyers remorse, so I took it back for a refund without even opening the box! Either way, no - Persona 5 is the only game in the series that I've played but I'd be keen to try the others. Don't suppose there's an HD remaster of P4G on the way, at all...?

P4G is the Vita remake of the PS2 original. No plans for a remake that i know of i'm afraid.

Ironically the Vita is my window in to making 100 hour games such as P5 viable - remote play is never 100% reliable for me, but its good enough to allow me to make progress in games that are not action focused.

Flower, Sun and Rain (DS)

......i honestly don't know how i feel about this one. I know i enjoyed how weird it was, and i really liked the art style of it (i'm certainly no graphics whore). But the actual minute to minute gameplay was pretty poor. Sometimes solving a puzzle was rewarding, most times just dull. But i'm sure that was the ironic nature of the game. But i did reach a point where i felt that it had gone past ironic and just straight in to boring / mundane.

Plotwise i have no idea what was going on. I think i probably should have played The Silver Case first. I still very much want to play that (will wait until on sale for PS4), so i guess that means i was left suitable intrigued.

Music was absolutely fantastic from start to finish.

Its such a tricky one. Certain bits really resonated with me. The way it starts with him waxing lyrical about his Toyota Celica - i love stuff like that. The detailed description of Baggio's penalty miss at USA 94 - love this kind of stuff. Other bits just left me so confused i felt like i had been left out of the joke.

So it gets a 6... but also a strong recommendation if the games premise sounds interesting to you.

Sounds reasonable - I never finished it but I know I was very near the end, I just got stuck on a puzzle and refused to look it up. It's definitely the strangeness and the monologuing/dialogue that draws me in.

I finished Travis Strikes Again last night and it has cameos in it from Flower, Sun and Rain and The Silver Case.

Yeah, my Suda 51 roadmap is to pick up Silver Case, then if i enjoy it 25th Ward, followed by Travis Strikes Again (preferably on sale by that time).

Assassin's Creed Odyssey - 10/10

Sheer brilliance, controls were perfect, graphics truly stunning, and Alexios was a great character to play as.
