Wolfenstein: The New Order - 8/10

+ Looks great, especially considering I was playing on the 360
+ Some really nice guns and satisfying gunplay
+ Plot is pretty entertaining and engaging
+ Nice variety of locations and enemies
+ Likeable characters who are voiced well, with decent dialogue

- Weapon selection is a bit awkward
- Enemies can see you from a mile off, even when you're mostly hidden
- Having to press a button each time you want to pick up ammo is annoying
- Some items and collectibles are too obscure, and even with hints on, they don't always show on your map for some reason

I really had a blast with this. The negatives above are pretty nitpicky and didn't really affect my enjoyment of the game too much - they were more just minor annoyances. Having completed the game it looks like it wants you to play through again, this time making a different choice early in the game, which is fine, but I don't really have the time or inclination to play through it all again, even though I had fun with it. Same with the collectibles - I turned the hints on for a reason, so that I wouldn't have to spend time scouring every inch of a level trying to find each collectible, but the game still decides to only show you some of these, so inevitably you end up missing loads of them and are then expected to replay entire chapters to get any that you missed. That just isn't fun for me, so I guess I'll be missing out on the extra games modes and such that are locked behind having certain numbers of collectibles. I wish developers would give alternative options for stuff like this - not everyone wants to replay whole sections of the game (or the entire game) when they've just completed it, purely to unlock a few things they've missed.

A very enjoyable game though, and one that has me interested in checking out the others in the series.

Modern Warfare II

Barring the convoy level I thought it was a solid campaign, particular liked to have to play stealthy on a few levels rather than constant Shooty Bang Bang!. Was a nice change of pace & I do love a bit of stealth.

Will try the multiplayer soon & seems there are spec Ops as well.

Little nightmares 2 - 9/10

I'm about an hour in (so would guess I've done about 1/3 of the game) - its good; very atmospheric and creep, nice simple [but not too simple] little puzzles that don't slow the momentum of the game - but there's been a few times I've found it pretty frustrating. There's been a few areas I've died several times (stuff like been stalked by flashlights etc) - I don't remember feeling frustrated with the first game. Overall enjoying it though!

Has anyone played Little nightmares 2? Its really good - actually scary - the sound effects are spot on - total harrowing quality, the jagged movement of the bad guys is genuinely distressing, it really is a creepy experience. I really liked the first game and this is undeniably a better game.

However, definitely lends itself to 20 minute bursts! Roughly every 20minutes there's something that annoys me; something which takes me like 10 attempts - its not that bad as there's regular save points so I only lose like a minutes worth of progress. There's chase and/or stealth sequences that are amazing however some not so much! Enemies that work like the boos in Mario where you halt them by shing a light on them - only they're coming from multiple directions. It takes a few goes but the thing is this game isn't supposed to be like Celeste (where you die loads of times but master through repetition) - this game has less emphasis on gameplay and more on creating a spooky atmospheric adventure - with these sequences I feel like the desired effect is meant to be intense-but-do-it-within-a-couple -of-attempts-and-feel-like-you-dodged-a-bullet. When you are having to do a scary set piece multiple times you lose immersion. Its frustrating because generally the puzzles are paced perfectly, just challenging enough but you don't feel like you are losing momentum.

Edit: To give some love to the Switch though (like that's needed in this thread  ). To anyone who hasn't picked up LN2....With multiplatform shorter games, if I have the choice I'll sometimes play on my PS5 for better performance / graphics, but the Switch in handheld mode with headphones is the ultimate way to play this game (and I suppose horror games in general like I'm thinking of playing Resident Evil Village if streaming the game doesn't turn out to be total dog gooseberry fool) - such a gripping, intense experience!

Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooa! Dat ending! Fist pumping stuff - before it hits you how grim it isAnyone else played it - any theories?

Few annoyance but great game

Not played 2, but I have played the first game and the DLC. I played it for my podcast. Was enjoyable. Or was it? Who knows?

Horizon Forbidden West PS5

I'm glad I saw this through in the end. I think the back half of it was far better than the early stages, with the story being more compelling and "high stakes". Incredible visuals and decent combat. Suffers from the typical Sony first party issue of being too easy on normal, but then having spikes on harder settings. I found Hard / Very hard for "damage done by enemies" together with normal on "enemy health" was the best balance for me and kept the inevitable over levelling from making everything a cake walk.

Far too much game - I didn't engage with the combat trials or the races at all but enjoyed the tall necks and ruins. Did black boxes and drones if they were on my route.

In the end I finished it after 56 hours and at level 43.

I would but it on the same level as Ghost of Tsushima, but a long way behind God of War and a bit behind Days Gone.

Cuphead (Switch) - 9/10
Finished this 100% on regular mode. Though I enjoyed my playthrough, its difficulty has put me off going back to better my scores or (god forbid) try expert! Well, yet anyways. Oh, and can't leave without stating the blindingly obvious; the visuals / animation are outstanding!

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End - 7/10

This is quite a spectacular looking game six years after release. It’s no wonder this generation has still to really get going when most of the PS4 first party stuff can hold up so well visually.

The writing and acting is comfortably the best of the four games although the sense of adventure never quite hits the same heights as the first two. It’s also weird how the supernatural stuff of those first two stories got largely dropped over time.

The quasi-open arenas elevates the combat to be the best it can be, which is unfortunately still mostly frustratingly gooseberry fool, and the rope is a great addition although it makes several puzzles where someone is stuck make absolutely zero sense.

Still, it’s a great game and a good end to the series, even if the start of most big combat sections made me turn the game off for the night.

Uncharted has definitely given me a bit of a cinematic adventurer bug so I’ve reinstalled Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Tinykin - 8/10

Great little puzzle platformer with a few nods to Pikmin. Not particularly difficult and not overly long (7hrs from start to finish I think), but a charming little diversion. Looks great and the 2D sprites over 3D environment works really well.

A Plague Tale: Requiem (SX)

A bigger and better version of its (very good) predecessor. Impressive voice acting and likeable characters, together with truly next gen graphics (30fps was fine for me here) and a wonderful soundtrack made it one of my favourite games of the year so far. The next big 3rd person wide linear game I play will have to be pretty good. Hopefully there is something just around the corner.....

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling (NSW) - 8/10

This got better as the game progressed. The more you explore and the bigger battles you emerge victorious from, the more exploration points (EP) you earn which allow you to level up. Each time you level up you can increase your HP, TP (Team Points, used for special moves in battle) or MP (Medal Points, which are used to equip medals for additional in battle benefits).

Super Mario 3D World (Switch) - 9/10
Have really enjoyed the short burst gameplay but not always the perspective; it makes some of the jumps overly tricky eg mushroom-5, it took me an age to get that middle star! However, did manage to eventually bag all the stars and stamps up until Champions Road, where I am now. Think this is where I might have to bail though; feck, it's tough!

I, like many others, struggled with the perspective also. I don’t remember it being such an issue on Wii U. Maybe it is the increased run speed the makes it more tricky.

Still a good game though, looking forward to Bowsers Fury around Xmas time.

I have completed all the levels up to that point I think, but despite having the vast majority of stamps and stars, I’m missing quite a few golden flagpoles, so the project is currently on hold. I might go back to it before starting Bowsers Fury though (I have it on cart so need the motivation to dig the box out of the draw).

Gigabash - PlayStation 5 - 3/5

Bought this ahead of the Godzilla DLC pack 1 release on December 9th.

I've had my eye on the game for a while but never got around to buying it. The story mode is very well done and the 4 characters which do have a story mode are all different and really shine during the little comic strip like cut scenes. It's a shame all of the characters didn't get a single player story mode as it would have really bulked out the game.

Completed all 4 of single player story modes in one sitting. Very enjoyable and easy to play. Bright colourful and charming. Hopefy the Godzilla DLC is the first of many. Would love to see Ultraman and Pacific Rim cross overs too.

Wish my image sig would work

Doom (1993) - 8/10

+ Looks good in widescreen and with new resolution options
+ Revised controls for controllers are great
+ Still as fun as ever

- Levels deteriorate in quality as the game goes on
- The new episode isn't great

Had a good time with this. Some levels are a bit too maze-like for me, and the quality of them does go downhill after the first episode, but it's still a lot of fun, and looks and controls better than ever.
