Hey, that's quite an accolade, shy guy! How does the game rank in comparison to your verdicts of 1, 2 and X?

Just beat Metal Gear Solid for the first time, played on PSvita, overall I really enjoyed it! The story was interesting and had a lot of twists and turns especially towards the end. Gameplay wise it holds up very well for a game over 20 years old, some fiddly bits with the controls at times which made some sections more awkward than I think they should have been. As I say though, overall I enjoyed my time with MGS and will carry on the series by playing the second one at some point.

MGS1 is the best game in that series. This is before Kojima disappeared up his own hole.

MGS3 (the improved camera version) is probably the best.

MGS5 has the best sandbox gameplay though.

Strange Horticulture (Switch).

There is so much I loved about this game - the art style, the atmosphere, the feeling of being a detective.

My only disappointments with it are that it feels like it runs out of ideas in the last couple of hours - there are no new mechanics or interesting items to try and work out how to use, and also the text is far far too small for it to be played in handheld (I really did strain my eyes when I tried - even with the various zoom modes).

At the 5 hour mark it felt like it could be my game of the year, by the end (about 10 hours total) it felt brilliant, but not quite fully realised. Just a couple more mechanics could have put it on the level of an Obra Dinn etc.

While it may not be completely finished I'm happy saying I'm done with Outriders.

I have max level gear, a build I like and I did the final raid today so I'm happy. I'm not going to bother with world tier 16-25 as it's just the same content but tougher monsters.

Overall I enjoyed the game and I think I'd really like to play as a team but I've been playing solo. The game actually has half decent turret based build possibilities and I love a good turret build in games.
I think I could also make a decent medic build for a team which is my prefered play style and so many games seem to make medic builds a bit gooseberry fool.
I'm not the sort to worry overly about super min/maxing my character or gear but I feel the grind for gear I like wasn't that bad but then again I wasn't even caring about looking for god roll items.

Overall an 8/10 so pretty great :toot: .

Beyond A Steel Sky (Switch).

Nice reboot of the series, still hilarious in places (mostly down to Joey again) and with a good puzzle solving mechanic that effectively has you doing simple programming tasks. About 12 hours long, which felt just right.

A few bugs along the way pulled it down in places (puzzles not registering as solved when they intact were), but nothing that proved catastrophic. Good hint system too.

Resident Evil 4 Gamecube - 9

Definitely a preferable way to play the game over the multiple HD versions. Holds up really well to play but the story and characterisations are as crap as they’ve always been. The village section could be longer, the castle section is at least a third too long and by the time you get round to the island fatigue has well and truly set in.

Wondering what Gamecube classic I should tackle next.

Scott Pilgrim (Switch) 8/10
Enjoyed this when I wasn't pulling my hair out in frustration (re: it's flippin' hard!). The last level was a complete git, but thankfully managed to finish it. Not sure I would have done it without the shop before the last boss though!

The Artful Escape

I can see why some people don't like this, but I was grinning from ear to ear throughout the two or three hours it took to run through it. Genuinely amusing, with stunning visuals and soundtrack. Gameplay is slight but fun, and it certainly doesn't outstay it's welcome. A cracking little diversion.

Saints Row 4 - 6/10

+ Runs fairly well and looks decent enough
+ Some enjoyable missions
+ Some nice design touches
+ Some amusing moments

- Tedious side activities and missions
- Too many pointless collectibles
- Humour's very hit and miss
- Writing's very hit and miss
- Drags on for far too long

I started out having a pretty good time with this, but it feels like such a mixed bag, and gradually my enjoyment waned. It throws a lot at you, but only some of it is good/funny/interesting, while a lot of it is boring/dull/unfunny/tedious. The plot is pretty out there, which is fine, and it allows for a wide range of situations, missions, and gameplay styles. Most of that's bearable when it relates to the main plot, but the vast majority of the side missions and activities are stunningly dull, and even moreso when there are so many of them.

The writing and humour is hit and miss, and everything feels padded out for the sake of it. Way more side missions than are needed, way more travelling around the map than is needed, way more backtracking and pointless little diversions than are needed. I have a communicator thing to talk to my crew from anywhere, so why do I constantly have to go back to the ship to speak to them to get a mission off them? Why do I pick up a mission at one point on the map, and the next bit of the mission is always on the other side of the city?

The city itself is fine and enjoyable enough to be in I guess, but the navigation is annoying. They put loads of vehicles in the game, along with customisation options, and then practically encourage you to avoid all vehicle travel and any use of cars by giving you loads of superpowers that negate the need to travel by anything other than running/jumping/gliding. That comes with frustrations though, along with there just being way too much travel needed in general.

If the game was a bit more concise and wasn't padded out so much I might feel better about it, as the core mechanics are decent, but it's so protracted and full of tedious crap that it becomes yet another game that doesn't know when enough is enough, and ends up suffering for it.

Monkey Island 2 Special Edition (Xbox 360)

Still one of the true greats. Developer commentary is also really interesting, and only as invasive as you allow it to be.

Played pretty much the whole thing in classic mode, but switching to the updated graphics could be useful for ease of highlighting hotspots. But the pixel art is 100 times prettier.

Amazed how quick you can breeze through this now - I did it in about 4 sessions. I'm sure it took me a whole summer holiday as a child (and I'm not sure I finished it then).

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance II

I loved the original on the GC and have played a bunch of saves of the re-release last year, but have never played the sequel (bought a PS2 copy a few years ago but then my Controller didn't work).

So the positives are, the new Workshop system is good, the expanded characters are interesting and the additional side quests (including character custom quests) are an improvement, and I enjoyed the story.

However it was a bit of a let down overall, the graphics are noticeably poorer and don't seem as polished/as smooth, I'm not convinced the AI pathfinding is as good (which was never a strong point in the original), but perhaps it's the poor level design/dungeon monster selection.

The dungeons weren't as good and in general I found the boss battles poor (more misses than hits) with difficulty levels all over the place. They tried to mix the gameplay up marginally including some run for your life bits, which I didn't particularly care for.

I also found the last 2 acts all a bit rushed and anti climatic.

Perhaps it's lack of nostalgia, but I can't see replaying this nearly as much as the 1st one. If you've played and like the 1st one, I'd certainly pick it up if you never got the chance to play this one, but I just wish it was all a bit better.

Minish Cap (3DS Ambassador)

I'd never got around to finishing this when it first came out, and so I thought I'd give it another go over the past couple of weeks.

There's a lot to like - I like the way that kinstones unlock secrets (Although at the end of the game I seem to have loads left over, and no-one to match with)
The overworld is great, with satisfying unlocking of areas, fast travel etc.
The Big/small dynamic is fun, although being stuck as 'small' when you've finished some trek or other is a bit of a pain, having to wander all the way back to a changing point.

The final boss though... - RIDICULOUS - far too many stages and impossible to work out what will cause damage. If you fail, you have to do several previous screens of lesser bosses too. I resorted to a guide in the end, and I kept pausing to see what in the merry heck I was supposed to do next. I had to use all 4 bottles filled with Red Potions to get through, whereas every other boss in the game had been a fun challenge (apart from perhaps the giant octorok)

So up to the final boss I'd give it an 8, but it loses a mark for the last 15 mins. :x

Beacon Pines

This was not in my radar at all until is saw some talk of it here. Basically it’s a very well written, well narrated 5 hour visual novel, but without the dirty feel you are always left with after your typical visual novel.

Well worth a play around Halloween. Never feels quite as innovative as it seems to promise, but I really enjoyed the presentation.
