Good going, Salads! I saw a little bit of your progress on stream (flicking around the GRcade streamers after watching your Asterix the Gaul gameplay) and it looked to be a neat game.

The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine

After 4 years, 3 countries and more personal change than in any other time in my life, I finally finished the last piece of Witcher content.

And I don't know how to feel.

4 years is no exaggeration. This is a game I'd go back to time and time again, often just to exist in the world. In spare moments I'd fire it up and just walk around Novigrad, or Ard Skellig, taking in an atmosphere that no other game has managed to conjure before or since. Just watching the people go about their circular, systematic chores and lives. I'd maybe do a side mission or two, very rarely a main quest, stringing everything out as I didn't want the experience to end. I didn't want to be in a world where there was no more of the Witcher for me to play. But I slowly made progress, completing the main campaign about 2 years back then starting in on the expansions.

I started playing back when I lived in Australia, on a crappy grey-market TV propped up on a chest of drawers. When I moved back to the UK the game came with me. And now I've finished it all here in France. I don't think any other playthrough has been with me as long as this one.

The game itself is now my favourite ever, I think. My memories of playing through FFVII in 98, getting all my characters to max level, will probably never be topped as my favourite gaming experience but without the benefit of childhood nostalgia this came damn close. Despite its clunky combat and often awkward controls CDPR created an honest to god world here. Perhaps not the biggest, perhaps not the most interactive, but they managed to make everything feel more real than any other game. And the writing...perhaps the best in this generation. Main quests like The Bloody Baron typically receive the most praise, but the level of consistency is stunning, with barely a single interaction being anything less than superlative.

I'm genuinely sad it's over. Since its announcement I assumed some of this would be countered by anticipation for the followup of Cyberpunk, but although I'm still excited for that game the missteps CDPR continue to make around it is deeply troubling. But I suppose we'll see about all that when it arrives next year.

But for now, I'm just happy this game exists and that I have the memories of it I do.

Good post. Keen to get into the series, I have 2 but I am right at the start of it.

Anyway - Borderlands 2 - and this is a long one for me actually clocking in at 2 years and six months. Admittedly this is more to do with me dipping in and out of it then anything else.

Avoiding all discussion of Pitchford entirely, Extremely good. I'm probably the last person on this board to finish it so I wont go into details of the game play but it built on the first ones solid foundation brilliantly, the story and humor really take it to another level and you can lose hours in it without even realising. Hopefully 3 can address some of the more dated aspects of it such as the slightly clunky fast travel system some annoying navigation issues and the Co-op level scaling, or more accurately lack of it. Looking forward to it now, I think a shall make an effort to get the DLC played before September.

Observer (Xbox one x)

Odd, confusing but strangely compelling. Technically it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but the world itself is incredibly alluring. Worth a play if you like hard sci fi or enjoyed the strangeness of Layers of Fear (which I marginaly preferred this to).

Double Dragon II, NES (Switch Online).

It's clear this is no Streets of Rage 2, but it's definitely pretty fun especially in 2 player. This one has a strange set up, where regardless of the way you're facing, you press one button to attack left and one to attack right, with both together to jump.

After a while, it starts to make sense and works pretty well. It's certainly worth getting a pad with a proper dpad (again, I recommend the 8bit do SF30 Pro as I breezed through this compared to using the joycons) as with all these retro games.

While it's fun, a lot of this is about finding glitches to spam attack your enemies where they can't respond (and hoping you don't get caught in one yourself), or learning patterns by repeat play and just responding. Still, that was life in the NES era, and it's a fun little game. It's a 6/10 from me. Or a 4/10 if you don't have the nostalgia for that era.

Great stuff Taf, really enjoyed reading your take on the game.

I struggle to ever pin myself down to a "favourite game" but TW3 is one of the clutch that I hold in that position.

As you say in your medium piece I don't think I have ever experienced something that genuinely made me feel as if I was actually within a world in the way that CDPR managed here - certainly not at this kind of scale and context. So many games now just feel like movie sets in comparison, just a facade with no real depth or independent purpose beyond serving the journey of the player through them.

I remember dragging the game out as much as I could as well! Plenty of games leave me with a great feeling of pleasure and achievement on completion, but TW3 is one of the few that has given me that particular feeling of satisfaction mixed with a tinge of loss that you get at the conclusion of a really great novel.

Ultimately I think it made me care about the world, characters and events in a way that games so rarely manage to achieve. Even on the smallest of sidequests or incidental conversations I was engaged and actually wanted to learn about the people and places within the game. In something like Skyrim or Mass Effect I can barely keep my attention through the essential main quest dialog let alone the fringes, but here I was sad when talking to even the most unimportant of people no longer offered me new dialog options to explore - I wrung every last drop I could out of the game!

Think I'm going to put The Witcher 3 to the top of my "to play" list based on these posts...

Been meaning to get round to it for awhile.

Rayman Origins - 9/10

+ Looks lovely
+ Good music (for the most part)
+ Nicely designed levels (for the most part)
+ Encourages replays of said levels
+ Good level of challenge
+ Good variety
+ Satisfying to play

- Some frustrating levels
- Some annoying bits of music
- Non-Rayman characters that you can play as are awful

Very little to criticise here. A very polished game throughout which is a lot of fun to play and offers a decent challenge. There are definitely some frustrating bits, but nothing insurmountable, and I've replayed some levels more than I thought I would. Just deciding whether to bother collecting the final few Lums to get the last Skull Tooth and do the final/optional level.

Dragon Quest II on iOS.

This improves upon the original in almost every way. Much bigger game world, far more variety in the monsters and perhaps most importantly you control a party of characters now.

The gameplay and story are still pretty basic (battle monsters, get stronger, gather you party, find some artefacts, defeat the villain) but there’s a marked improvement over the first game.

It’s interesting playing these early games in the series as a companion piece to DQXI as you while you can see how much as changed you also see what they had down since day one.

10/10 can’t wait to start III

Same, I don’t own it yet but will buy it on Switch if it’s a good port.

Spider-Man - 8.5/10

Very addicting and mostly satisfying adventure with good comic book pacing and a reasonably satisfying climax.

Forced stealth sections and subpar, repetitive minigames caused minor point deductions.

Are you talking about the science ones? You can actually opt to skip them, but i don't think the game advertises it very well.

Ya I was. Honestly didn't realise that - would have felt a bit cheap to skip them though, I guess.
