I think maybe I would call it exploitable rather than dumb. I realise that's being pedantic but just saying the AI is rubbish is how I'd describe essentially non-existent AI of an enemy just standing still until you get in range then attacking that you still get in plenty of games. In BOTW there is plenty of scope for playing with the enemy AI and discovering behaviour which elevates it. I think complexity of systems probably in some ways makes finding AI exploits easier!

Bomb spam is a good criticism for being an almost anti-mechanic, it's a too easily discoverable and exploitable approach that isn't really any fun. Hero mode mitigates it with regen health but that's pretty heavy-handed and not an AI response.

I borrowed Mario and Sonic at the Olympics recently. I thought presentation wise, they did a lovely job of celebrating what would have been the Tokyo Olympics. It actually felt quite bittersweet, especially as it is up in the air whether it ever happens or not. But I really liked the sense of place in the story mode and how it wasn't just menus. It was also quite a fun story and a nice way of making something work with all the events. The events themselves were a really mixed bag. Some of them felt quite undercooked and basic without much depth. Obviously in multiplayer, that would be less of a problem.

Also, Rugby 7s is brilliant! It will never happen but I know want Mario Rugby. Shame the online is so dead because I really enjoyed the few games I had.

6/10

Another convert! I played a ton of Rugby 7s online so its a shame but very unsurprising it is dead, even with the pretty janky netcode and completely unbalanced ranking system (the highest ranked player in the world at the time was A-, everyone else was at most B+ ) it was really fun.

It's not as good as rugby 7s but the football is actually good too.

Football was okay too, but it really just made me want a new Strikers

With a bit more polish and a few more mechanics, Rugby 7s could be a superb little sports game.

Strider 2013 - 7/10

This wasn't bad, it didn't outstay its welcome either. A very good attempt at a Metroid style game. I wish they had done a sequel that improved on it.

I really liked Strider too, then it was taken off Game Pass right before I got the last two achievements. Can't really justify paying for it just for five minutes of gameplay.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 10/10

The rarest of games that you enjoy every second of and don't want it to end. It can't compete with the lore of Hollow Knight, but matches it in the pantheon of Metroidvanias when it comes to world building, controls and polish.

A delight and recommended to everyone.

So. Just finished what remains of Edith Finch. It’s a lovely idea and well executed but how depressing!! As a dad, during a pandemic, I feel like a cry.

Non pandemic times 9/10. In a pandemic - Avoid!

I enjoyed what I played of it but would have preferred something more akin to the Strider arcade - which is one of my favourite games of all time. I'd love a really well-crsfted and varied arcade game where every level is different from the last. A lot of the game's surreal charm was lost in the remake.

Yep. It’s depressing. I’m not sure I enjoyed the game if I am honest.

Finished Season 1 of The Walking Dead last night. I think I started it in October! I found it a bit of a slog at times, and as I wasn't sure where it was saving, I was leaving it until I had the time to play through a whole episode in one setting, and found I'd often use that as an excuse to not touch it for ages. I played their Game of Thrones ones a few years ago, and seem to remember that being far more about dialog and choices without any of the point and click stuff. The bit with the train stands out as being particularly tiresome. Having said all that, I really did like the final episode, and now I'm pretty sure I'll check out season 2 at some point, which I was not planning to do up until now. I know the review scores suggest season 1 was by far the highlight, so probably won't end up playing the whole thing.

The Medium.

Intriguing story and great art design and soundtrack, but limited depth in the actual gameplay. Just as it started looking like it might open up and offer more challenge it wraps up. Stealth bits are average but limited in number, which was a blessing.

Worth 10 hours of your time, and by far the most polished effort by Bloober Team so far.

7.

Little Nightmares - Brilliantly creepy world. Did not see the dark turns coming. Looking forward to playing the DLC and sequel. The sequel is out pretty soon, too.

That’s about what I would rate it from the ten hours or so I played.

The Mummy Demastered - 7/10

Perhaps a little harsh on this because I'm playing it straight off the back of the magnificent Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

This is a competent, by the numbers Metroidvania. A good amount of biome variety, a pretty good sound track and some fun weapons, but brings absolutely nothing original to the table.

Goldeneye XBLA (PC)

(Preface: this is an unfinished leaked build and I got as far as Control, in which you don't have the mines needed to blow up the mainframes so I guess that's the end of that)

Nostalgia is a funny thing. Playing this again in the harsh light of day, years after I last played it properly, and quite a few levels are just awful. Either you can't see anything or the environments are so repetitive that finding where you need to go without the muscle memory of countless after-school and weekend sessions is a real chore. I'm glad I got to try this white whale of a game though, but I don't really want to play it any more though.

Are you sure you picked them up? I watched a video of the walkthrough and the mines are there and working. Although it doesn't sound like you particularly want to keep playing it.
