Resident Evil Zero - 6/10

I just found this cumbersome to go through again. It has a lot of issues. Crap anime villain, largely pointless story, game world feels like a bunch of locales thrown together with zero thought put into it, lacklustre monster design.

And yet, weirdly, I finished it. I think the train bit is great. I just wish the whole game was like that.

It made me really want to play through Remake again.

Resident EVil Remake - 9/10

I loved this so much that I played through it twice this weekend

Went through it as Chris (which I've never done before) and played through it as Jill in her BSAA outfit. Beat Jill's in just over 5 hours.

The layout of the mansion and its grounds and the way it loops in on itself, I love it.

Resident Evil Village - 9/10

RE has quietly snuck up as potentially my favourite gaming franchise. This is another great videogame. A silly story, sure, but non stop action and great variety, with a decent difficulty curve. Very satisfying play through on Standard.

Sonic Spinball 6/10

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I got used to the physics by the end of it all but I had fun.

I bought and finished and immediately refunded The Test on Steam and I don’t want to give the game a second more of my time so I’ll just post a warning here:

If a cheap game is rated Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, don’t just buy it without reading the text of said reviews. If the majority mention a YouTuber by name, swerve that gooseberry fool and serve it hard.

Metal Gear

Never played it (well past the first few areas) before but now I have the HD collection I thought I would finally give it a go. Actually really enjoyable little game however, major flaw having to go back and forwards and back and forwards all the time. That and respawning enemies.

That aside, great game. Onto Metal Gear Solid Snake

Metal Gear - 6/10

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2

Sniper Elite V2 - 7/10

+ The sniping is great
+ Missions are generally enjoyable
+ Some option of how you tackle missions
+ Doesn't outstay its welcome

- Close-up gunplay isn't great
- Plot's pretty forgettable
- Enemies have a magic ability to sense where you are
- A bit glitchy and odd in places, like being able to hear enemy conversationa from hundreds of metres away, or the game freezing and taking several seconds to open the map

I had a break from this a while ago and never went back to it, so I finally returned last night to complete the last level. Was fairly straightforward in the end, but the ending was a bit abrupt. Decent game overall, but once the novelty of the sniping mechanic wears off, the rest of the game is pretty average - still decent though.

Red Matter

Really enjoyed that. Fairly simple puzzles and unoriginal story but a great, eerie VR experience.

Yep, really enjoyed Red Matter despite the fact it didn’t really do anything revolutionary. It was just very polished.

I loved the sense of scale in some of the areas. Particularly the thermal reactor and the lab as you got further underground.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Much better than the first game, less backtracking and when you have to backtrack it isn’t so confusing. Lots of stuff that made it’s way into Metal Gear Solid like fighting people in lifts, changing something in temperatures, hand to hand combat, fight against a Hind D etc.

I did have one near game braking frustration as I had played 3 hours without saving and the game decided to auto save me at a boss battle with no weapons, rations etc and I only could get hit 3 times and I was dead. Took so many replays to learn how to beat the boss without getting hit.

I’ll give it 7/10

Life is Strange: True Colors

You know what you are getting by this point, and this one delivers another great story, with mystery and small town feel aplenty.

Probably the best game in the series since the original LiS, though in many ways this is a superior and more refined product than that also.

Technically good (played on Series X), though sometimes textures popped in a split second after loading a scene. Vibration in the triggers is massively over the top - it's actually distracting and takes you out of the experience. I can imagine it could potentially work much better on the Dual Sense, but here it was just naff and cheap.

But an excellent, well paced game, even if it is just more of the same.

8.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake - PlayStation 5

After a lot of breaks I returned to this and finally completed it. Music is exceptional as to be expected. Graphically it's shiny and beautiful. Story is interesting and the Gameplay kept me entertained. Only issue was some of that padding towards the end, but I can forgive it for that.

Looking forward to the next part of the story.

Wish my image sig would work

Citizen Sleeper

Finished this last night. Liked it a lot, in truth it was not much like Disco Elysium (small dialogue selections seems far less impactful and did not flavour the story to give that "personal tale" feel), but it still offered something very unique and well written. Biggest criticism would be that the economy of the game just doesn't really work - you end up with way more of everything (including stat points) than you could ever really need, so your "role" is almost inconsequential.

But still a game that I think will stay with me longer than most, and a really excellent minimalist soundtrack.

I just Finished Watch Dogs Legion and the propper ending is a really nice touch.

I don't know why but it really got to me and I was actually quite affected by it.
I think it's because I feel I'm slowly slipping away into dementia as well.

10/10

The ending was oddly the most moving game ending ever for me.

I was never able to get far in it, the physics could be all over the place and even when i tried it again years later on the gamecube, i still struggled.

Guacamelee - 8/10

+ Nice, stylised visuals
+ Fitting soundtrack that doesn't get (too) annoying
+ Combat is satisfying and enjoyable
+ Decent sense of humour

- Some sections can be annoying with finnicky platforming
- Lots of stuff to spend coins on but none of it's much use

Enjoyed this quite a lot. Took me very slightly under 9 hours to complete, which in all honesty flew by - felt more like 5-6 hours. Not much of a plot, but it doesn't really need much of one, and everything about the game is pretty high quality and well done. There's still some stuff to unlock after beating the final boss, but I'm not sure I feel the need to go back bother. Will definitely check out the sequel.

Dark Souls - 9.5/10

+ Brilliant world design - intricate, atmospheric, and crafted really well.
+ Great art style, from the environments, to the weapons, to the enemies.
+ Loads of different weapons, shields, armour, items, magic, etc and freedom to use them how you choose.
+ Good challenge - not insurmountable, but definitely tricky.
+ Satisfying to play, whether it's exploring and finding new areas, to overcoming bosses - there's a feeling of accomplishment that comes from progressing.

- The UI is awful.
- Runs horribly in places.
- Some tedious and frustrating sections.
- All of the hollow/humanity/invading bollocks - doesn't appeal to me at all and doesn't seem to add anything.
- The plot's not great - they put so much effort into everything else, but the plot's too vague to be interesting. A bit more detail would've helped a lot with tying everything together.

Tried this a few times ages ago and couldn't get on with it at all. Hated dying and having to repeat what I'd just done, and everything resetting after using a bonfire. For some reason the 'GRcade plays' thread inspired me to give it one more go though, and I shifted my approach to the game - taking a different view on dying, losing souls, and how progress works - and I really think that was key. If you approach it like any other game, it will frustrate you, so you have to treat it as its own thing and take a different approach to it. Having done that, it turns out to be a brilliant game. Not without its flaws, as I've outlined above, but very, very well done. Looking forward to playing the others in the series in the future.
