Ninja Gaiden (NES) Fun Castlevania like action game. In fact, it pretty much is that game, and like the third Castlevania, bastard hard at the end.

Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters 7/10 Fun sequel, but found the scrolling a little disorientating at times.

Pac Man (Game Boy) 6/10 Not a great version of Pac Man, but it's still fun. I've played worse versions.

Double Dragon (Game Boy) 5/10 Quite enjoyed it until the seriously cheap Rock guy turns up to spoil all the fun.

Adventure Island (Game Boy) 6/10 Simple platformer that maybe a bit too basic, but was a pleasant experience.

Dante's Inferno - PS3

A solid action game that borrows almost entirely from God of War, that is impressive both technically (solid 60fps, no loading screens) and visually (the different circles of hell are well-visualised). 90% of the game is great; descending ever downwards is engaging but the last 10% is really disappointing. It puts a series of challenge rooms in your way that are mandatory and smack of them running out of money. The end boss fight is pretty uninspiring and it finishes with a 'to be continued' that we now know has never happened.

A difficult game to score, as each positive is matched by something negative.

7/10

Batman Arkham Knight (PS4)

Only the second game I have completed this year (which says a lot, really). And when I say completed, I mean to say that I have seen the second 'ending' but I'm not sure I want to hunt around for all of the other Riddler trophies to fully complete the game.

Anyway...I enjoyed it a lot. Played right through from beginning to finish (which is more than can be said for the other Arkham games which I have started and then returned to months later). The main game is well-crafted. Flying around the city is enjoyable and I found the Batmobile to a good addition to the game (I actually enjoyed the tank combat and didn't find it that intrusive). The graphics are sweet, the combat, as always, is really tight, the story I found to be pretty good (I don't know enough about Batman law to have guessed the Knight's identity before the reveal...but the clues were definitely there!), and I must of sunk a fair few hours into the game, most of which I really enjoyed, however...

The only thing that's stopping me from recommending this unreservedly is the 'after game' collectathon / slog. Why do game developers continue to think that time consuming activities = fun? I haven't got the time to spend 10 or so additional hours figuring-out riddles or destroying check posts that are similar to ones I have already bested dozens of times before. Took the shine off of an otherwise well-constructed experience.

8 out of 10.

Best bit about Dante's Inferno is how EA had the balls to release the original poem in the manner of a tie in novel for the game

Trip World 5/10 A cult classic I didn't see much in. Cute enough way to spend thirty minutes.

Mega Man II (Game Boy) 7/10 Liked this more than the first Game Boy Mega Man, the music took me on a real nostalgia trip, seeing as it was the only Mega Man I played when I was young.

Game 35: Journey
Image
I'd played through this on PS3, but only once, so it was interesting to take the trip through it again on PS4. The funny thing is, there were main narrative beats I could remember from the first playthrough 3 years ago, and I assumed there were missing bits I couldn't recall. But it turns out I remembered pretty much the entire thing, so it was shorter than I was expecting. That being said, I found it massively more affecting this time around. Journey is a game about life, love and loss. It's about personal growth and friendship. It says so much without uttering a word, and it does so with such perfect weight that it doesn't even feel like it's doing anything. I'd played this before. Hell, I could even remember the entire thing. But since the credits rolled yesterday, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Flawless.

Journey 10/10. As beautiful and incredible an experience as it was the first time I played it 3 years ago. No other games has made me genuinely worried like this does when you suddenly lose track of your buddy and start to panic and wonder if they're gone forever. I made it all the way to the end with what I thought was the same guy and we died right next to each other at the summit just after I took this pic.

But then..... the resurrection and ascension and the final step into the light

A magical experience.

Turns out my 1 guy was actually 4 of them according to the credits at the end. :fp:

I remember on my play through I was with the same person right until very close to the end until we got disconnected.

The whole thing was magical.

Bloodborne - thank strawberry float that it is over/10

I'm not going to lie, I struggled with this game and it frustrated the hell out of me. There are lots of things I like about the game, the environment, the exploring and the finding new stuff, but the difficulty level for me is too high. Most of the time I felt the game was unnecessarily difficult rather than challenging and rather than being fun, it was a frustrating chore. Maybe I was playing the game wrong, but compared to Demon's Souls I felt the rewards just weren't worth the danger you faced to get them. The various clothes/armour you find have stats all over the place and there is no straight forward "this is better than that" so I pretty much stuck with the same thing for the whole game. Likewise with the weapons and gem combinations, too much faffing about, I just want to find a weapon and know it is better than the last or know it isn't. I also found that the levelling up really didn't make a whole heap of difference because as you progress, the enemies just become more difficult nullifying the effect of your levelling. Yes, you can go back to the earlier parts of the game and wipe the floor with people, but I expect that as I get up the whole thing gets easier, not just the bits I've previously struggled through.

As it stands, Demon's Souls is still my favourite of this this type of game. I really hope that if any more games of this type are made they put an adjustable difficulty level in so people who enjoy the exploring and item collecting side have the option to do this without having to repeatedly play through frustrating difficult bits.

So now it is completed and the game seems to have started again (but letting me keep my weapons and stats) is everything going to be more difficult or am I going to be able to breeze through it? There were a couple of bosses in the dungeons I got stuck on, ROM (which was utter BS when you get the 2nd and 3rd parts and the spiders won't come after you, forcing you to try and get to them whilst dodging ROM's ice attack) and the Blood Stained Beast (Loren dungeon, just when I think I'm making decent progress he has some BS poison attack and I don't feel I have enough to fight back) and I would like to finish them, but only if they are going to be easier rather than more difficult.

Guacamelee!

A joy to play from start to finish, so much so that as soon as I finished it I did so again on hard mode, and again earlier today to get the last of the trophies (got the platinum and all trophies from the DLC packs too). Love the gameplay, combat, style and humour. It's a little short, but that just means I'm looking forwards to a hopeful sequel down the line. Drinkbox are one of my favourite indie developers.

God of War III: Remastered - I didn't remember it being this good / 10

Was worried it'd go on for a few more hours but the beginning of the end came just at the right time.

Arkham Knight (PS4)

Combat is still perfect, love the bits where you team up, the story is a bit weak, batmobile is good fun but the constant tank battles are dull, poor use of supervillians like Two Face and Penguin, too many paddling with poor side quests, almost no boss battles.

Basically it's a good game but the weakest one out of all Arkham series.

8/10

Mega Man III (Game Boy) 7/10 More Mega Man, more fun. These games don't change.

South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play! 7/10 A tower defense game which didn't end up frustrating me, and loved how much care was put into it.

That is great. Had a lot of fun playing this with my son, daughter and nephew a couple of years back. "How you like my hot sauce?"

Would have liked to play it in 4 player, but alas, it was a 2 player coop experience for me. Made me want to watch some of my favourite past episodes, with the villains, music clips, special abilities and unlockable videos that referred to so many past events.

Also beat Galaga (NES) 5/10 I think these types of shooters have really advanced since then, to the point when these older shooters are just so slow and a little dull. Galaga Legions is far more exciting.

And Xevious (NES) 5/10 Infuriating.

The Twin Snakes

I've started this and the PS1 original a few times but never got very far. I decided to go back to it after enjoying playing around in Ground Zeroes and I'm very glad that I stuck with it. I'd always been averse to the idea of playing something known for long cutscenes but the story was so engaging, thanks to the numerous twists and fantastic voice acting, that I enjoyed watching all the cutscenes, regardless of length.

The gameplay itself is incredible, especially for a remake that is so old of an even older game. Little bits of attention to detail, like guards noticing footsteps on the snow, show how much care has gone into making this and add a lot to the experience. The mechanics themselves are great for sneaking around though it did take some time to get used to the controls for things like sidling along walls. The first person view was a welcome addition to the remake at times, but I did try to use it sparingly.

I thought that, as good as the sneaking is, fighting bosses would be a low point because the third person view wouldn't lend itself well to such encounters. I'm quite glad to see that I was very wrong as they were all enjoyable, though Raven's was the hardest. My favourites have to be Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis and fighting Liquid in the Hind though the others weren't without their merit. Kojima and co. were really inventive and did a great job of adapting the third person mechanics, and instances of first person action, to such encounters.

I'm really looking forward to playing through the rest of the series before TPP comes out. This is an amazing game and easily stands among my favourite games of all time.
