I have an unhealthy addiction to achievements.

Did you get all the achievements?

I was going to go for the platinum on PS5, having just finished the career, but then I saw a trophy for 20 online wins and I don't see it being worth the time and effort.

I haven't done levelled up to 50 yet but there's an easy method. I can boost the online wins by myself as I have two Xboxes.

That's some dedication

I think I just have to accept I won't be able to get the online one. So annoying as it'd be pretty doable otherwise.

Finally finished Persona 5 after what feels like months. It was my first Persona game and I did enjoy it but I was just wanting it to end for the last 30 hours of it or so.

Genesis Noir

Awful. Nice graphics and sound, but the game itself was pretentious nonsense. Also filled with glitches and bugs. Hardly a game at all in truth, and did not feel well suited to a controller (but would still be rubbish with a mouse). Only finished it for some easy achievements. It was not worth the effort.

Subnautica

Although I Googled the directions to the last couple of locations, I absolutely loved it. I don't normally play survival games but this one really got its hooks into me and the process of foraging and crafting felt very rewarding. It's the perfect Castaway simulator.

Alice: Madness Returns - 4/10

+ Actually quite nice looking
+ Some good level design and ideas
+ Combat can be satisfying at times

- Drags on for way, way, way, too long
- The same puzzles over and over and over again
- The same platforming sections over and over and over again
- The same enemies over and over and over again
- The same story over and over and over again, just going around in circles without moving forward until the very end
- Story is an absolute mess
- Pointless collectables
- Alice is really annoying
- Jarring transitions between cut scenes and playable sections
- Dodgy collision detection
- Iffy controls
- Awkward camera during combat
- Random invisible blocks and barriers in the levels that get in your way
- Multiple paths in levels that the game doesn't give you a chance to explore

This could have been pretty good, if the story was tighter, and the game a hell of a lot shorter. I'd love to ask the developers why they felt the need to drag this out so much, when there clearly weren't enough ideas or content to merit it, resulting in everything just being re-hashed and repeated for hours and hours. This is also far and away the worst game I've ever played when it comes to giving you multiple paths, you choosing one, and - oops - that was the one that pushes the story along and now you can't go back and get those collectables or see the rest of the level. It happens so many times, and even when you think you've noticed a pattern in identifying secret areas versus the main path through the game, it'll flip it, and what looks like a secret area is actually the way forward, so you're then cut off from the rest of the level with no way back. There are whole sections of levels that I didn't get to explore (not that I cared later in the game), and some levels I left earlier than I planned to, just because I chose one path over another and the game just moves on. There are so many bad design decisions that I'd love to know what they were thinking. I've no idea who American McGee is, or why his name is on this or the original, but he sure makes some gooseberry fool games.

American McGee is most well known for having been a level designer on Doom 2 and Quake. He was part of id for a good few years.

I absolutely adored the first Alice when it originally released but I agree with everything you said about the sequel. It was just devoid of anything genuinely entertaining. The original has aged horrifically too.

Marvel Avengers - 6/10
So, just completed the campaign. I really enjoyed the start and all the parts with Kamala; shes a great character. Would def be up for a solo adventure. However, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed and it got less interesting. Fighting faceless aimbots in a fairly repetitve set of levels wasn't particularly engaging.

Enlisted - PC

Its a fairly solid battlefield like multiplayer shooter with the nice touch of having a squad of ai with each player so you can switch to one of them if you die, but after a while just getting stomped over and over started to generate the same ennui and unhappiness as with the other battlefield games so I called it quits there rather than keep playing something just to make myself miserable.

I finished Sniper Elite 4 last night and I thought it was great.

I've moaned on here for years about how I suck at sniping in games but this isn't the fast-paced twitch sniping of Battlefield it's slow and methodical and about getting into position and staying hidden and I can just about do that.
The levels are all well laid out and interesting with quite a few side missions and the game just clicked with me and drew me into it.

Gamepass really did show its value as I wouldn't have played this otherwise  .

I may even go for the higher difficulty levels as I beat it on normal which is rare for me so this game gets a deserved 10/10  .

You should check Sniper Elite 3 out too. I really enjoyed it; it goes for peanuts in the sales.

Finally finished MGS V.

I do not think I have ever loved a game with so many obvious issues this much. I think all my issues stem from the fact it's so plainly not finished. Certain story scenes just seem jarringly out of place compared to what else has been going on. There are scenes where other characters will have five minutes of dialog, and in that time, Boss responds just twice, both times using the exact same one word reply. Then there's the extreme versions of earlier missions, just thrown in there as part of the 'story campaign' and how towards the end, unlocking the genuine new story missions is done through some really obscure/tedious stuff.

I also really disliked the prologue. I looked back through a lot of impression threads from the time, and saw people calling it 'proper MGS' but I strongly disagree with that. Feels like Kojima was just testing out ideas for his Silent Hills game. It was very much a horror game, and felt pretty unrelated to the rest of the game. The 'twist' was very obvious to me, and again surprised on how few people seemed to pick up on it at the time. Obvious, and pointless. Served no gameplay or story purpose.

Despite all these problems and gripes, still one of my favourite games from the last couple of generations. The open world can be a bit bland, but the freedom it gives to the missions, along with all the awesome weapons and tools makes the actual meat of playing the game so much fun. I'd often replay missions, first to try and get S ranks, and then kept doing it just for the fun of it. Probably why I've ended up with a ridiculous playtime of 214 hours.

Mass Effect: Andromeda - 6/10

Y’know what, I think this is just, JUST about worth playing. It’s rare that you come across a game that does so much right, but makes a right bollock out of fairly vital things to drag it all back down.
Exploring the planets, ticking off all the side missions, driving about in the 6-wheeler? Great. Hampered by hazardous conditions and really tough to navagate terrain? Not cool. Great worlds to explore, but full of awful characters? Yeah. Several links to old ME games but does nowt with it? Yup. Awesome combat but a shite cover system? Yeah. A western RPG with an absolute bobbins story, with writing quality just all over place, but looks just lovely in 4K. That’s in.
Weird.

Streets of Rage 4 (Switch) - 9/10
Finished the co-op run through with my son. Ended up taking longer than expected; stage 12 was brutal compared to what went before. We ended up having to use the assists to get through it. Will def be doing my own solo run; looking forward to finally getting to play as Adam!

The Last of Us - Part 2 (PS5) [8]

Just finished this after having put off playing this for a while (really didn't want to play a game of this nature back in 2020 when it was released), and, had the game ended about 10 hours earlier, it would have been a [9] from me. Some issues with pacing and a story that may have been more effective it it wasn't so bloated (I don't have any issues with the story overall - I know the game came under a lot of flack when it was originally released due to some of the story choices, particularly one aspect that happens early in the game, but I felt this was thematically a reasonable thing to do) - it just became very directionless at points. One of those games, like Red Dead Redemption 2 that doesn't quite know when to round things off / keep the pace up.

There is so much to praise about the game so I would recommend it. From a game play experience point of view, it improves on the original by not making so many of the encounters driven by whether you have shivs and you are therefore are able to fend off the clickers which gets rid of a lot of the frustrations I had with TLOU. Animations in this game are just mind blowing, and the point-to-point game play is exhilarating - those encounters never get boring. What does get boring is walking around Seattle through very samey environs only to encounter two enemies in the space of an evenings's play (no exaggeration).

Couldn't agree more. I had no clue what this game was supposed to be about.
