Luigi's Mansion 3 - 9/10

Loved this, in my mind definitely the best of the 3. There were so many points where I really had no idea how I was going to progress, and then with all the various lights, Gooigi, plunger etc there was always a way through.

The lowest point was probably the Sewer level - the dingy controls were annoying, and the graphic design and music reminded me of 'Clanker's Cavern' from Banjo Kazooie, which always frustrated me all those years ago. It felt like I was playing a different, inferior game for a while.

Loads of stuff to go back and do, so I'm not done with it yet.

Overall a great experience, I felt like starting it all over again when I finished it. There seem to be other game modes but they appear to be multi player, so not much use to me as a non-online switch owner.

Disco Elysium (Ps4 Pro)

An easy 10. Probably the best game i have ever played, hitting me in a way no game ever has before.

From a technical standpoint it was a mess after release, but is now completely stable.

I'm looking forward to replaying it in a year or two, making some very different chocies as i go (next time i will rock the electrochemistry, shivers and communism philosopy).

Its the first time in a long time i actually feel compelled to buy something physical relating to a game to show my passion.

And British Sea Power is a great choice for the accompanying soundtrack. I cant think of anything working better.

I've recently finished both the Resi 2 and 3 remakes

2 I enjoyed, but I played 2 to death in 98 and while no doubt its very good it just made me think "how good was this in 98"

Where as, while 3 is generally not considered as good, I gave up on 3 at the time so have never really played it so really enjoyed this. I really liked how it linked to 2 and playing it straight after really enhanced this.

I'd give them both 10 out of 10.

2 is objectively better in that there's more too it. Two characters, 2nd plays.

Genesis Noir

Was a little worried going into this given the rather hostile reaction to it on here, but I actually quite enjoyed it. There are definitely some clunky moments and the last level was appalling but the setting and style mostly carried it through. Worth a look.

6/10

Batman Arkham Knight - XSX - GamePass 9/10

Finished this for the second time (previously on PS4 at launch). Did all side missions 100% apart from the Riddler challenges which I never do finish.

Looked great and seemed more enjoyable this time around from what I remember. Yes, even the batmobile stuff.

Marvel Avengers 6.5/10
Solid and very enjoyable story mode that introduces to us to Kamala Khan who was a brilliant lead. Some great and memorable moments, though the gameplay is incredibly repetative and the level design is rather lazy.

Backbone

It's a pixel-art detective game. I'm writing/have written a pixel-art detective game. I really wanted to see what people in the same arena were coming up with, especially as it's had rather mixed reviews.

After finishing it I am desperate, desperate, to know what the pitch for this was. The first act, which was released for free as a demo, is good. The art and soundtrack are both incredible, the setup is simple but good and the puzzle (there's pretty much just the one) is fun.

Then things get... Weird.

There's not a single puzzle in the rest of the game. Considering it was marketed as a point and click detective story, this is odd. From Act II on, all other gameplay mechanics except talking are removed. So it becomes more like a visual novel. But it's still fun, it still looks amazing and the story is still intriguing. Then Act IV hits and it all goes sideways. Spoilers for the game's big old genre twist:

Your raccoon detective gets infected by an alien parasite that slowly begins transforming him into an eldritch abomination.

...yeah. It really didn't work for me. The mystery you were investigating in the first acts is dropped completely as you deal with this new situation and then...it ends. I've not seen an ending quite so abrupt in a while and it really, really stinks of budget and time constraints. Which is sad.

The dialogue is...fine. Most of the branching choices are inconsequential and there purely for flavour but it's all well done. The characters are shallow but interesting. But that turn just...throws everything out, resets the story then almost immediately concludes with no answers given.

So yeah. A truly bizarre, deeply flawed game.

A generous 5/10

EDIT: Mistakenly looked at their kickstarter page and man...basically every mechanic on there is absent. Man.

Outer Wilds - 10/10

About a quarter way through the game had already delivered more genuine astonishment, wonder and surprise than most other whole game series, and then it continued delivering all the way to the end. I thought getting through the atmosphere to a hurricane-storm planet was incredible but the game was just getting started.

The sense of discovery and the slow-grow knowledge and wisdom you build about the solar system and its rules feels rewarding and earned, and the game's main mechanic is basically curiosity and careful observation. And the game is so sincere in its celebration of that curiosity and discovery and science that it's kind of inspiring.

I wish I was able to enjoy The Outer Wilds. I loved the art and the mechanics, but the time loop just frustrated me. I didn’t feel I could taken anything in because I was too concerned about being booted back to the start. I also kept hitting puzzles that seemed too complex to be solved in a timely fashion, making me unsure as to whether I was missing some key information or if I just wasn’t good enough at it.

Dying isn't failure it's just punctuation! Like a Rogue Like!

I would say the game has an arc to it, where at first there are seemingly too many things to see and do, and too many new bits of Nomai technology and so on to get to grips with and figure out. Also lots of things are connected across the whole solar system in a way that doesn't become apparent until you've seen and read enough.

But then it suddenly hits this critical threshold where you start to piece things together, to see the links, and then it goes from haphazard stumbling to purposeful expeditions and a gradual mastery and deep understanding. But it does take a few hours to pick up on the path.

I wouldn't worry too much at the start, and don't focus on orderly completionism of planets - just go organic, for random jollies wherever you fancy and dig around until you're stuck then try elsewhere. Also feel free to use the Ship's Log - and remember there's two modes; rumour and map - though initially it seems is a mess of overwhelming information and I ignored it for the first half. But by the end you've picked up on the thread of things, and start to use the log to focus your efforts and polish off things you've missed (it tells you if there's more to discover in an area you've been to or not).

Also, don't worry about dying or about time. You'll die lots and effectively there's infinite time for things once you get used to the ritual of restarting and returning. Maybe fly into the sun a few times to break down that mental barrier. You may well do so without even wanting to (i.e. Me). You soon realise that things you run out of time for, or die in the middle of, can be quickly reached again when you shoot back, and for the things that seem like longer endeavors you'll end up finding a few Dark-Souls style shortcuts that shave off lots of time when revisiting.

And yes there are lots of puzzles that are impenetrable until you've learned more, from elsewhere. It's like a knot, it's hard to know which thing to tug at first, but if you keep trying suddenly one will work and the whole thing starts to slowly unravel.

Oh! And make sure to use L1 to barrel roll when needed (ship or suit), and R2 and X together to Boost-Jump (suit). I realized both these things someway in and was very grateful when I did!

Anyway! Maybe just not to your tastes!

Wow, that’s a great reply. Thanks for all the advice and info. I do feel kind of tempted to start again and see if I can make some meaningful progress this time. I will let you know if I do. And thanks!

Psychonauts

A visually fantastic platformer with loads of character and personality. Unfortunately the platforming itself is a bit average, and the camera is less than fantastic. Also a couple of difficulty spikes and it can be hard to know what you have to do next on a few occasions. The classic point and click DNA is a touch apparent in places (for better or worse).

It’s a thoroughly charming game, and really does have bags of personality, but whether that is enough to warrant the 12 hour playtime is questionable and makes it a hard recommendation. It does however look INCREDIBLE scaled up on the Series X with auto HDR. It’s really jarring when it cuts to the original resolution cut scenes.

Im really looking forward to the sequel, as I’m sure it will have far more polish and modern sensibilities.

Resident Evil Village

Loved every second of it.

First playthrough took 14 hours on Hardcore. Struggled a lot with the first encounter but it balanced out beautifully from there. Couldn't have been a more perfect difficulty for a first playthrough. I did struggle a lot with the last boss to the point I thought I wasn't going to be able to beat the game, but eventually I got good /lucky.

Started an immediate second playthrough and nearing the end at about 7 hours, playing around with the unlockables.

Would have really liked the option to return to the castle later in the game with it overrun. Sure it would have been padding, but it would have been fun.

Easily a 9

Super Mario 64.

Like I've said previously, this game holds up remarkably well; besides an awkward camera (honestly only an occasional problem in my experience) and archaic presentation, it still feels great to play. I certainly enjoyed my time with the game - moreso than the DS port, which I don't remember enjoying in the slightest besides the bonus mini-games - although I have called it a wrap at 101 stars.

Croc (PS1) - 3/10

I adored Croc as a kid. The cute, snaggletoothed little crocodile, his tiny backpack, the cries of "Kersplat! Kerpow! Yazoo!!", and the fuzzy little Gobbos. What's not to love?

The strawberry floating game, that's what. :slol:

Horrendous tank controls and completely incomprehensible hitboxes make for a deeply unpleasant platformer. The first two worlds are fun enough, but after the midway point, the bullshit starts to appear. First it's the bottomless pits. Then it's the collapsing platforms. Then it's multiple jumps in a row, all on the head of a pin. And then it's all of the above, in the dark. I'm honestly not sure if it's poor design, or just pure, unadulterated sadism on the developers' part.

I've honestly never save-scummed so much in my life. I completed it, but I'm not proud of myself.

Dirt 3 - PC

Finally got round to giving this a proper run through, and while the rallying/racing was fine, all the gymkhana dudebro gooseberry fool got old very quickly and I'm not very good at that stuff, to the point I finished every other race in the main career then dropped the difficulty as low as possible to just get it done. I was doing the extra races you unlock after the credits and I was struggling to get the bronze medal to pass a particular stunt thing and that was the "strawberry float this i'm done" moment so called it a day there.

On the other hand it was nice to play a rally(ish) game where you aren't also doing the team HR and finances, which modern ones seem to think is what people want to do instead of actually driving the cars, and blasting around Battersea when it was a big of a wasteland instead of the property investor/oligarch money laundering facility of shiny flats it is now.

Save the Light: Steven Universe - 8/10 (on sale on PSN for £9.99 right now)

The only bad thing about this game is the story, it's just very Saturday morning cartoon and doesn't hold the same emotional weight as the show can.

Other than that though, this game is basically a better Super Mario RPG, every attack toy do requires a well timed input or mini game, and you can take less damage the same way too.

Battles play out in real time (well ATB, like FF7) but instead of turns you get points toy can spend on different moves, not only that but positioning matters, for example Steven has an attack where he charges at an enemy, if bang into any other enemy on the way to the targeted enemy you will stun them.

Heals and buffs also apply in a radius so depending on the combat layout they are more or less effective in each battle.

It's crazy how little things like that can make every single battle feel so different, even with the same enemies, it makes me wonder why games like P5 or FFX didn't include elements like this as they REALLY suffer from repetition fighting the same monster patterns over and over again.

I feel like this game must have got written off because it's licensed but no joke it's actually strawberry floating amazing

GTA 5.

Still huge fun and competent across the many types of gameplay it offers. I played it when it released back on the 360, and it feels just as good to play all these years later on my Series X. The helicopter piltoting in first person mode was particularly impressive for me - it really gave a sense of scale to proceedings.

Also a special mention should be given to the excellent checkpointing (and even the option to skip missions if you die more than a couple of times). Despite owning all the prior GTA games, i has never finished one until i first played 5 due to the frustration that occured when you dies and last all weapons / a load of progress. This one makes experimenting far more fun.

Completed a few games since finally picking up a PS5 about a month ago:

Astro Bot - Just as delightful as the VR original, serving as both a great demo of the hardware and homage to the history of Playstation. A little more substantial in terms of content than I'd expected from a freebie too. Fingers crossed a full game is in development. 8/10

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Pretty much exactly what I'd hoped for from a next gen Ratchet & Clank. Looks incredible, plays well and offered some varied gameplay with a decent length campaign. It did have some bugs & perhaps could have been more ambitious by varying Rivets play style, but I still loved it. 9/10

Spiderman: Miles Morales - A great follow up to the original. I love Miles as a protagonist and the support cast are good too. As a fan of collectables I didn't find it too light on content. Looked great and I enjoyed the tweaks to the combat with Miles' powers. Excited to see what Insomniac do with the full sequel. 8/10

Bugsnax - So much better than I'd expected! Just an entertaining game, with an interesting puzzle element to figuring out how to trap the different snax. Longer than I'd expected too, and with some cool plot twists and developments I hadn't seen coming. A really pleasant surprise. 8/10

Titanfall 2 campaign - 8/10

Loved it again. It really held up on a second playthrough.
