Mark of the Ninja - 7/10

+ Has an interesting visual style
+ Some nice items and abilities
+ Open-ended approach to objectives
+ Satisfying to plot your way through an area and remain unseen

- Controls can be awkward
- Plot's a forgetful load of rubbish
- Goes on for too long

Decent game overall. I enjoyed it for the most part, but as with most games, it drags on too long and overstays its welcome. Controls can lead to some frustrating moments, and the plot I stopped caring about after the first level or two. I didn't bother with any of the bonus areas or item collection either - just not interesting enough. Some enjoyable, satisfying moments though.

The Room - 8/10

+ Inventive and creative puzzles
+ Good sense of progression/satisfying to progress
+ Looks nice

- Some puzzles are quite obstuse, mainly near the end of the game

Had a lot of fun with this. Quite easy to get sucked in and keep going once you get on a good run of making progress. I had to resort to a couple of hints for some of the final puzzles, but a satisying and engrossing game nonetheless.

Metroid Dread - 9/10

Fantastic gameplay, looks great, good story, tough bosses that make you feel like you’ve accomplished something when you beat them. Delighted to see Metroid back.

I do think regardless of people saying (not on here but elsewhere) about “getting good” to beat it, it should have difficulty options from the off, enemies hit hard and bosses can hit very hard so allowing players to feel the same sense of accomplishment even if they have to play on easy wouldn’t be a bad thing at all, after all they need most of the people who’ve bought this (new and returning fans) to continue to buy and play games in the franchise and if people can’t get very far in this for whatever reason it may put them off future titles in the Metroid franchise.

Dead Space 2

Enjoyed it for the most part, but found the last chapter frustratingly difficult, and the constant swarms of enemies meant it lacked the tension of the first game.

Decent, but a bit disappointing after all the rave reviews I had read. Still looks good though.

Tokyo Jungle

Going to give it a 3 / 5

Single player is good (apart from the final boss), particular the stealth missions later on, I legit dug them. Like Metal Gear Solid. But with animals. The only drag about the single player & unlocking animals is that you have to unlock via survival.

Golf Club Wasteland - 7/10

Enjoyable but rather short, the story is quite fitting given the current focus on tackling climate change.

That's a pretty good description!

Glad you liked the singleplayer in the end. I love the survival too (and the thought the final boss was good final boss fun), but there we are!

The Forgotten City (Series X)

A really enjoyable, non-frustrating time loop game.

Some really good writing and a nice compact play area helps mask the fact that you are largely being guided through the whole experience, so you never feel smart or that sense of “have I just managed to do something that no one else has ever seen”.

I guess those are the thing that people loved The Outer Wilds for, but I just struggled and found it frustrating to progress in that game. I guess I would like a middle ground.

Really good story, and I felt very happy with the way it all wrapped up with the “Canon Ending”.

It took me just over 10 hours, but I listened to just about all of the excellently voiced dialogue. It’s probably close to half that (maybe a touch more) if you don’t exhaust all dialogue options etc.

So yeah, if you loved the premise of The Outer Wilds, but we’re not bright / attentive enough to progress, play The Forgotten City.

8 (but probably a 7 if you loved the openness of The Outer Wilds).

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - 9/10 (XBL Version)

It's been on my to-do list for years, but finally worked my way through this, all the way to the "proper" ending by defeating Dracula.
It is a masterful piece of work. Absolutely stunning sprite-work, fun bosses, great level design. Wonderful.

If I had complaints it would be that it's too easy to hit the first ending and think that's the game over when you're maybe 50% through at most.
I think the knockback needed reigning in.
There needed to be a button dedicated to item (Like the Saturn version).

But that's really about it.

I'm not sure that I knew there was a Saturn version of the game :o . After searching, I see that it was a Japan-only release; I wonder why such a good title never made it to the west?

Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Didn't 100% it. A fun game, if suffering from typical Ubisoft fatigue as it goes on.

The Evil Within 2

It got a bit melodramatic in the final few chapters and the cult leader was a rubbish villain but it was a really great game with amazing combat. If I hadn't just gotten an Index, I would've happily started a NG+ to search for all the collectibles and fully level up.

I'd have to play the first one again to decide which one I prefer but I do think I'd miss the semi-open world of this brilliant sequel. And the stealth, the stealth in this was really satisfying and was a much more viable tactic. I guess EW2 is the better game.

Star Wars: Fallen Order - 7/10
I was pretty unenamoured with this initially and though it has too many issues to ignore, it definitely started to grow on me in it's latter half; as the story improved and more powers were unlocked. Admittedly, the whole Star Wars atmosphere made me a bit more forgiving too. It'll still be going on ebay /cex, but I wouldn't say no to an improved sequel.

As for the finale; Vader was a great surprise, but the resolution of the story was pretty underwhelming. Also, the final boss battle was a piece of piss compared to that git Malicos!

the whole story is basically redundant because of the ending

Turok Dinosaur Hunter Remastered PS4 - 8/10

Not played this in years and forgot how good it is, yes its simple and basic compared to modern games but the level design the environments and music for each level make it an enjoyable game to play.

Yard Sale Hidden Treasures: Sunnyville 6/10 (Wii)

This is a weird one, I didn't even remember I had this until Jawa mentioned Tomena Sanner, which I knew I had somewhere, which then prompted me to fire up the wii mode of my wii U - only to discover this title.

As my partner has been encouraging me to have some 'proper stress-free downtime', I thought I'd have a look at this earlier today - and ended up playing it start to finish.

It's a hidden object game, with an extra 'plot' of renovating your house using junk you're basically buying from your neighbours, who are also renovating in order to win a home decorating 'grand prize' - being featured in what looks like a very local 'Home Decorating' magazine. Anyway, all that stuff (pretending to spray-paint things with a wii-mote) is a bit tedious and gets in the way of the hidden object searching itself.

It's not great, but it's not bad - and I felt compelled to 'tidy' this game up so I'd feel satisfied with my discovery of the game.

There are two things that add to the hidden object experience in this case

1) 480i graphics make it pretty hard to make out what some of the stuff is, even when fully zoomed in.
2) I didn't know what some of the objects were - they were words I didn't know and had to look them up. So - a little bit educational too!

Anyway, I finished it, and I felt I had to tell someone. I've no idea if this is obtainable through any means now that the wii shop is offline, so it's also probably worth a fortune if I ever sell on my wii U. :simper:

MX vs. ATV Reflex - 7/10

+ Looks decent enough
+ Dual steering and balance controls work well
+ Good variety of vehicles
+ Decent selection of tracks and environments
+ Good variation of race formats

- A couple of the race formats are rubbish
- Crap menus
- One of the worst soundtracks I've ever heard

Solid enough racing here, with the variety and choice of vehicles to use in a race helping keep things interesting. The main interesting mechanic is the balance and weight of the MX and ATVs, and how this impacts the racing. Takes a short while to get used to, but is really good. The career could do with a bit more structure and fleshing out, and some of the races go on for a bit too long, but it's a decent racer that's good to dip into every now and then.
