Perhaps a little harsh on this because I'm playing it straight off the back of the magnificent Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

This is a competent, by the numbers Metroidvania. A good amount of biome variety, a pretty good sound track and some fun weapons, but brings absolutely nothing original to the table.

Have you played Aliens Infestation? It's a similar licence metroidvania from wayforward and is the better of the two.

I still liked The Mummy Demastered a lot, in fact I've got in on order from Limited Run at the moment to get it physical. Which should give me an excuse to replay it as I believe it got a quite substantial rebalancing update (on launch it had a lot more enemies all over the shop iiirc)

Aliens Infestation was great. I played it about 3 years ago and the atmosphere etc really held up.

Mafia: Definitive Edition - 8/10

Looks lovely, great world, nowt to do in it though but collect meaningless trinkets. Basic, by the numbers story that ramps up relatively well towards the end. Well written and acted though. Gameplay hasn’t been ‘remastered’ that much, pretty clunky stuff. Works well enough, I guess.

Control

I really wanted to love this but for every step it took forward, it took two back.

And the story went absolutely nowhere after the first couple of hours. The final chapter was the wettest fart of an anti-climax both in terms of narrative and in gameplay.

It was so close to being a good game and it pains me to say that, upon finishing the story, it's just left me feeling frustrated and disappointed to the point I feel like I might have actually hated it.

While not original I think dying and becoming a new agent and having to kill your previous agent which has all your upgraded gooseberry fool is pretty unique in a Metroidvania and also pretty cool.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

100%'d this and Big Surf Island with around 55 hours on the clock. All jumps, billboards and smashes located, all events won, all vehicles unlocked, Elite license earned. Had a blast with it, the Switch port is really well optimised and plays like a dream.

Slay The Spire

Finally finished all the achievements on this, so that's the corrupted heart beaten with all characters and Ascension 20 done with the Ironclad. It's a borderline faultless game, absolutely loved all 150 hours I put in.

9/10

Yep, I did consider giving it a rare 10/10 from me. Monster Train on Game Pass is pretty good as well.

I'm gonna move onto that next I think. Supposedly it's a slightly shorter completion too, which is nice.

Slay the Spire is fantastic. I will definitely purchase it when it comes off Game Pass.

Wolfenstein The New Order (PS4)- 8/10

Had a few issues with it in the gameplay department and like most 3D games collision felt wonky at times, but this was really great otherwise. I often get irritated by narrative heavy games like this but what they did here was really something; I'm impressed at how well they managed to write a man who used to basically be a floating gun. Game was hard as strawberry float especially for me since I blow dick at FPS's, but I like a challenge.

Perhaps it is my childhood indoctrination during my America years speaking, but Blaskowitz reading out The New Colussus in his internal monologue as he lay there dying was a wonderful way to end this game.

I'll play the DLC at some point, and perhaps the sequel too at a later point, but I've had my fill of this for a while.

I really loved The New Order. It has some lovely character moments.

Finished Shadowrun Returns. I liked this overall, the story was a fun ride on the whole, the combat was very good. Somehow completely missed various gameplay systems until the last mission, the mechanical upgrades, the overwatch ability (how did I miss this?)

I felt it was a bit too linear though. Also glitchy. I beat the game within 10 hours and I had three game breaking bugs, usually it was scripted events not triggering. It was annoying.

I'm interested to see what the other big isometric RPGs are like.

7/10

Edit - Layers of Fear

I must have got this from a Humble Bundle, I don't remember buying it. I thought this was good for what it was. I didn't find a lot of it super scary, although some of the jump scares caught me off guard. Solid enough game, depressing narrative.

6/10

As an ode to American exceptionalism and WWII-era grit, I find BJ Blaskowitz and the rebooted Wolfenstein series to be absolutely top tier. The New Colossus itself seems a bit gooseberry fool, but my God The New Order was a top tier game.

And I say that as someone who generally avoids WWII FPS games like the plague.

I never quite understood why some people didn't enjoy The New Colossus as much, I thought it was fantastic and had similar strengths/weaknesses as TNO.

It’s hard as nails, that’s why! So hard. Needlessly difficult, absolutely kills the flow of the game stone dead, that’s if you’re not running around the levels completely lost.

The only bit I found particularly hard is near the end where you're on some flying fortress and lots of robot walkers and cannon fodder soldiers keep landing in waves to take down BJ. There weren't too many safe spaces and doing enough damage quickly enough was tricky but I got there in the end.

The problem I had with TNC is pretty much the same problem I've just had with Control. You are so fragile that combat, when it gets intense, isn't even difficult, it's just unfair.

I loved TNO but gave up on TNC by the way. I also really didn't care for the story in the sequel as it took away from the moment to moment action too much.
