Yakuza 6: The Song of Life 9.5/10

Absolutely amazing game that ends the Kazma Kyru saga on a real high with a superb story and rather heartbreaking ending. The new engine really shows a modern Kamrucho and while it is a shame there isn't three fighting styles like in Zero and Kiwami, the fighting is still a blast.

Gone home 3/10

I thought this was supposed to be really good :|

Went in totally blind but knowing it's held in high regard, was getting some great creepy vibes at the start and was hoping for some great mystery to be unravelled only to find I've just spent 3 hours listening to some girl coming out. When we opened the book in the attic and it faded out I said, "...that better not be it". And it was. Load of gooseberry fool.

Burnout 2: Point of Impact - Gamecube

Its interesting seeing how the series began to change from the first game, getting a bit more of its identity through mechanics and setting. Its much easier to get and use boost in this than the first game too, in Burnout 1 getting boost seemed a lot more difficult, whereas this wants you to chain burnouts over and over to go as fast as possible. I confess to not really liking the crash mode all that much so don't count that as part of my completion. You can start to see the seeds of Burnout Paradise in this; all the tracks take place in a large connected environment but are cut up into circuits for each event. Balancing difficulty in games is difficult, but the first half of the game is extremely easy, I suppose to get you used to the tracks and handling, however the second championship requires way more attention and precision. This has the knock-on effect of making anything but the fastest cars retroactively useless towards the end of the game and for anything else afterwards; once I unlocked the McLaren F1-esque supercar that was all I used as it had the best balance of speed, acceleration and handling.

I remember Burnout 3 at the time, however having gone back through the previous iterations it'll be fascinating to see the difference again.

It's funny how we all approach games in different ways and like different aspects of them. For me, Burnout 2 was all about the Crash Zones; I spent loads of hours tackling the challenges and I found them to be hugely addictive. As for the racing mode, I barely played it  . Great game, though, and I still like the look and sound of it.

It's gonna be interesting to hear what you think of Burnout 3 in your next play.

I agree. It was wank.

We just had the same conversation in the GTASC thread, terrible game. Really liked Dear Esther though, that was a walking simulator done right.

SWBF 2 Campaign

The handful of hours it took to complete wasn't a poor experience, but quite forgettable. The story is quite predictable and as your move further in it becomes apparent that the campaign only really acts as a kind of extended tutorial.

What could have been achieved had more time and dedication been put into a single player campaign sticks out like a sore thumb throughout, further highlighting that EA perhaps shouldn't have been Disney's first choice for publisher. We can only hope Disney in time hand over the reigns to a studio that can deliver a solid Star Wars campaign as opposed to an afterthought to multiplayer.

6/10

The multiplayer remains a lot of fun though, particularly with friends.

8/10

See, I can accept people not liking it, but come on. It's not a terrible game in the slightest. I loved it, it actually brought me to tears, and it does sense of place like few other games out there.

Just because it's not for you doesn't make it terrible.

No seriously, I genuinely thought it was without merit. Story didn't engage me at all, and that is literally all the game offers.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD - 6/10

+ Reasonable visual enhancement
+ The old THPS gameplay is still enjoyable
+ Good soundtrack...

- ...but very lacking compared to what it could be
- Only a handful of levels
- Limited modes

This was decent, and enjoyable enough, but feels like a missed opportunity and a half-arsed cash-in. For what could essentially have been a 'best of' from 1, 2 and 3, it's very bare-bones. It's fun, but could've been so much more. Think I paid about £4 for it, so it's difficult to feel too aggrieved.

I suppose I was just triggered by the use of the word terrible. I get that you probably didn't mean it was on the level of something like Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing as objectively, it's not. It's well made, with a lot of detail and it uses effective game design. I also enjoyed the story.

Yeah ok, on a functional level it works I guess. And I can totally see how it appeals to some people, those kind of things always either get you or they don't. I know some folk can't get on with the story in Life Is Strange but I adored that.

I think you're being generous. I bought that game and the feel is totally off. I just couldn't stand it.

It is interesting, and a testament to the design of old games that they could accomodate different tastes. Regarding the look of B2, it has a cohesive and clean aesthetic but going back to it now I found a lot of the environments quite uninspiring - airport, city streets, highways etc - certainly compared to the distinctly european environments from the first game which were sadly dropped.

Rabi-Ribi (PS4) - 8/10

I got this pretty cheap, thinking that the 2D platforming, open world, and item finding would be right up my street. They are! The gameplay is addictive and slowly gives you lots of new moves to play around with. The story is interesting enough, and I like the main characters. The music is absolutely awesome, and I was pleasantly surprised to find an OST CD included with the game. My only criticism might be that, holy crap, does it get hard towards the end!

Overall, a fun game that I heartily recommend to anyone who likes platforming, bullet-hell shooters, and metroidvania games. This is all 3 genres put together!

FFXII The Zodiac Age - 9/10

Easily in my top 5 of the series, and probably the best looking of the lot imo.

As much as I love the simplicity and satisfaction of the gambit system, it leaves you craving for more challenging and tactical battles to really make the most of it. Espers are fun to obtain and look amazing, but ultimately pointless. Clan Hunt is maybe the best FF sidequest ever. Vaan is a pointless main character but the others make up for it. Endlessly playable even if you are playing at double speed.

Wolfenstein The New Colossus - 8/10
A solid sequel but I just can't help but feel a little bit disappointed with it. Yes it's a fine game with a great story and wonderful gun play but it was nowhere near as good as the New Order.

I agree in general. The New Order is a much better game.

Destiny 2 (PC). Really enjoyed Destiny so the prospect of more seemed great. The opening set the scene with almost "all hope is lost" (even though you knew you'd turn it all around).

Most of the mechanics that made Destiny great remain, I simply didn't enjoy this as much - the locations didn't seem as good and the missions less enjoyable. The strikes that were part of the story in Destiny are now outside of the main campaign and feel like an add on (unlocked at a certain point in the campaign). Likewise the sparrow (bike) doesn't feature until late in the campaign.

Like the first game, level progress is locked to 20 needing DLC to progress which seems utterly unnecessary. Turning this up a notch, silver currency has been introduced for certain purchases and can only be acquired with real money.

The last fight seemed too easy. Not that I'm complaining because I don't like repeating difficult parts, but to keep in line with the story of an opponent that is supposed to be powerful, why not increase the difficulty and make it a strike to support the idea that they are too powerful for one guardian?

Overall, still an enjoyable game but campaign wise, surely this could have just been a big portion of DLC rather than a brand new game. I didn't run this and the original Destiny side by side but it just didn't feel like technically this was a step up.

In the original Destiny I didn't get to play any of the raids (due to no match making) but did come back to the strikes repeatedly because they were fun and the prospect of new weapon drops. Not feeling this here and can't see myself returning. If there is some DLC that adds a large campaign I may return, but otherwise, I'm done.

Assassin's Creed 2 - 8/10

A bit late to the party with this one, started it several times over the years and never really got going with it. Been wanting to play some more recent games in the series so I decided to push myself to continue with it so that I can get up to date. Ended up really enjoying it, obviously it shows its age a little in places and had some really frustrating moments (control issues and forced stealth) but overall a lot of fun, Brotherhood next!

Mario Tennis Open - 7/10

Decided to pick this up on the cheap and play through in preparation for Aces on the Switch. Completed all tournaments in Singles/Doubles mode and played some of the other mini games. It's good fun, plays a great game of tennis (better if the gimmicks are turned off), just lacking in content.
