Saints Row IV (PS4)

I know that Saints Row is well received on GR but I thought this was actually very average game. The opening scene where you're stuck in the 60s managed to make me chuckle but the rest seems to be... dull?

6/10.

It does but the actual missions is more of the same for most of the time.

Hopiko.

Loved this. A twitch platformer par excellence, this was wonderfully innovative and had exactly the right amount of challenge. I'm knocking a point off here for a weird bug that killed you for no reason now and then, which could be very frustrating on the later levels. But considering I paid less than £2 for this in a sale, I can't recommend it enough.

8/10

I almost never finish games, so fixing that's a 2019 half year resolution. The plan is to start with short games, get back into the habit of enjoying something properly and finishing it, instead of just buying the next big thing when it comes out.

So... Kamiko (Switch).

I do love these games made in an 8 bit style, but which end up playing so much better than most 8 bit games ever did. I think Kamiko is a cracking few hours of gaming goodness. You can also play it in 3 different styles depending on your weapon, each of which really do change the gameplay. Although, I'll be honest, despite trying all three I only played it all the way through once.

Still, I suppose that is the retort to people who will say its too short. You can blast through it in a couple of hours using the sword, but using one of the two other weapons really does change your whole tactical approach to levels and potentially means there are three ways to play this. Anyway, nice tight controls, simple but satisfying puzzling and for only a few quid this is a solid 7/10 for me. Really enjoyed it, and definitely a fiver's worth of fun.

Gran Turismo Sport - PS4

I haven't 'finished' this per se, but I've reached my skill/patience/interest limit. The single player campaign is a series of race sets that, apart from shared rules and restrictions, are completely unconnected - no points, no championships, even for the really long endurance races. Its all about getting gold medals in individual events, which promotes bad driving to get the gold at all costs so you don't have to do the race again, as well as exploiting the rules restrictions to have a car way more powerful than the rest of the field. I did one of the endurance races in GT5 or 6 and used a car that was way ahead of the rest, leading to a very long and boring time trial because I didn't want to 'lose' by not getting first place and potentially have to do it again. This 'win to progress' model works great in arcade racers because that's part of the suspension of disbelief, the context is a lot more 'gamey' rather than trying to look like real-world racing, in which most people involved don't win.

I'm also at the point where I am just not fast enough to compete against the AI in the single seater racing series or reliably handling supercars on the longer races, where one mess-up can mean redoing a 20-30 minute race. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of the game, and the massive amount of free content updates is great, but I think i'm getting too old/impatient for super-realistic racers, i'm going to go back to the more arcade end of the genre, or try something like project cars 2 with a lot of the realism settings turned off/neutered to get a proper race series experience without the hours of practice needed.

Last night I finished Persona 5. What a game.

Expected to finish it around the 80 hour mark but in the end I clocked up almost 130. To my pleasant surprise - since I'd never managed it in a Persona game before - I maxed out every social link, and with a fair few days to spare. Some of the confidant abilities were very useful for that - especially one in particular. So that was very satisfying.

I was impressed by all the quality of life improvements in this game, which touched on stuff I wouldn't expect them to. Everything is so slick.

I like how they ditched dungeons with randomly generated floors in favour of ones where they, well, actually design the levels and throw in stuff like puzzles. They could sometimes feel like busywork but were mostly well done and broke up the combat nicely. Not that I hate randomly generated floors and of course there is a dungeon that's like this that runs alongside the 'main' ones.

Undertale on Switch 8/10 Great wee game but the endgame boss fights got a bit tedious.

Just finished Days Gone and I really loved it.

It may not be the most original game of all time and yeah it's maybe a bit repetitive but it kept me amused for weeks and I got much more than my moneys worth so I'm extremely happy.
9/10 as it does drag the story out a bit.

Pikuniku - 6.5/10

Hardly a must play, but charming enough. Would suggest Wandersong is a much stronger alternative.

Wargroove - Good fun and fairly challenging. The campaign has a good length to it and the various commander powers add some interesting strategy. A solid substitute while the wait for a new Advanced Wars continues. 8/10

Check out Fairune Collection for a more puzzle/adventure experience to which kamiko is a quasi-sequel. Fairune 1 takes 1-2 hours while Fairune 2 takes 2-4. There are also two very short bonus games included too!

Play the co-op levels if you get a chance, they're a bit different and good fun.

Boxboy! + Boxgirl! Completed the single player levels and got black stars on all of them. Don't think I've got the patience to go for S ranks on all of them. Might try the co-op levels at some point with the kids if I can be bothered. Really enjoyed it, that sense of satisfaction when you get all the crowns and box targets is brilliant. Well worth the £7 it cost me and I've got 10-15 hours out of it with a reasonable amount of content still to visit. 8/10

What Remains of Edith Finch 8/10

Intriguing little game. Dark but intriguing nonetheless. 100% completed

Burly Men At Sea 5/10
What the hell? Weirdest gooseberry fool I’ve played in a long time, possibly ever. Platinum obtained though

You can do the co-op levels on your own, it gives you the option to do it. They are pretty good.

Hi guys! New member here!

Days Gone:
Finally finished the main story of Days Gone. God, what a slog of a game! Soooooo long, way longer than it needed to. Game could have been 1/3 the size and I'd still leave satisfied. Didn't help it that the story doesn't carry the game, it was awful. There were no characters that were interesting to me, and the dialogue was utter gooseberry fool. At least the base gameplay was still fun, killing zombies, hordes, and clearing enemy camps. The world was interesting and well realized. Combat and gunplay were good enough.

7/10.
