I think there's definitely a sound argument for ND games being a lot of style over substance.

Spider-Man 8 out of 10.

Slick, handles well, good story amazing graphics but unfortunately I was left with a sense of having played it before with the Arkham series. It does nothing wrong (aside from forced stealth sections as characters I don’t care about) but I don’t feel it really innovated above and beyond what Arkham did many years before. I felt they could have included so many more iconic villains, the focus on mr negative took too much time and the insidious 6 was over too quickly.

Haven’t played any story DLC so don’t know if that expands on things.

So basically I loved my time with the game but Don’t understand those who claim it was GOTY.

Sinister 6. No idea why I called it insidious 6, sounds better though :shifty:

Edit: turns out the 90’s animated series called it the insidious 6 I’m guessing that’s what I remembered.

Ion Fury (PC)

Finished it this morning. It's an enjoyable enough game and a nice throwback to the period but after the initial excitement you soon become aware of just how little variety there is to each level, as in they all look very much the same, (unlike Duke 3D, Exhumed, Blood and the other games Ion Fury attempts to emulate), so it gets a bit boring after a time. Some of the weapons are also a bit pointless, so much so you'll rarely use them. There's tonnes of secrets to be found, but little incentive to hunt down each and every one, (again I put this down to the boring level design).

So, Ion Fury starts off well but several hours in it completely looses it's spark due to a lack of variety. The last few hours were a real slog that I almost gave up on.

RE: Uncharted 4, having never played the series before i was actually a little surprised how shallow the gameplay was but ultimately, I was enjoying the "interactive action movie" feel to it so much I didn't really mind too much in the end.

A Way Out - Blasted this over the weekend with a mate. While the general gameplay hardly excels in any particular area (average shooting, average stealth, below average driving, etc) the game is certainly more than the sum of its parts and we both ended up having a blast with it. As a co-operative experience it's pretty unique and great fun with a pretty good variety of different game styles (including an Old Boy style side-scrolling section!). We loved the little distractions in the game where you could play arcade machines or connect 4 together. Without wanting to spoil the experience for anyone, I have to admit we were both caught out by the conclusion to the story and the latter levels, which only added to the experience. Would definitely recommend for anyone after a quality co-op experience. 8/10

It could very well be that the series isn't for you. Uncharted is the pinnacle of action movies recreated as a videogame. The set-pieces and the spectacle are the big selling points. Uncharted games are unashamedly linear, they are a fantastic thrill ride held together by a narrative more notable for its production value than its content. It's the Fast and Furious of gaming. Player agency isn't important, only player engagement - that's what being a game brings over being a movie.

Still, you should definitely play 2. It is a big step up and a brilliant game - if you still don't rate it, it's safe to say that's just not your type of game!

Love seeing people enjoying this game  That side scrolling section is great, as is the ending!

I'm playing through 2 now, it is definitely much improved - although the shooting is still poor! Not sure which chapter I'm on now but a building collapsed with me in it just now and then I shot a helicopter down so it was a fairly tame session.

Obviously I'm still a long way from having played the whole series but based on where I'm up to I wouldn't necessarily agree that these games are the "pinnacle of action movies recreated as a videogame". I think that is true in a sense that there is plenty of set piece and spectacle going on, it's certainly hugely impressive to look at what is happening at times, but the act of playing it is so limited and restrictive that it completely undercuts the ability to feel like an action hero.

Something like Half-Life 2 achieves this goal much better in my book. The player is presented with plenty of big set pieces and well choreographed action sequences but the game is designed that they are achieved with a far greater level of freedom - the designers trust the scenario they have constructed, the AI they have implemented, the weapons, tools and skills available, and the ability of the player to allow those elements to work together to provide a genuinely thrilling experience. This goes even more for something like Dishonored - give the player the right tools to express themselves and create a compelling scenario and magic can come from that.

Games which give the player more respect and freedom make me feel like I am an action hero writing my own script to an amazing story, Uncharted feels like I am an actor during the production of an action movie where I must follow someone else's script to the letter - great to watch back but not necessarily that thrilling in the act of creation!

For me 4 and LL were a huge step up over the PS3 games. I liked 1, I liked the start of 2 but towards the end the bullet sponge enemies and horrendous final boss really soured the experience. I enjoyed 4 and LL from beginning to end.

Gears 5 (Campaign) - 9

A step up on previous installments in pretty much every way. Very impressed.

Next up Uncharted 4 :toot:

Links Awakening (Switch) - A hugely nostalgic return to one of my favourite GB games. Loved the art style and for the most part the game has aged very well with some excellent, challenging dungeon designs. At times it didn't feel clear what to do next, but the phone huts certainly helped with this. The slowdown, although fairly frequent, never really got so bad as to impact my enjoyment of the game. The game was definitely shorter and smaller than I remembered it being though, so it ended a bit too soon...but it was fun while it lasted. 8/10

Plague Tale of Innocence (PS4) - 5/5
Its set in 12th Century France during a Plague and you are escaping the Inquisition there is some Da Vinci code like conspiracy stuff in there too- the horror elements are the most chilling I've seen in a game.
There is combat but it's an action adventure horror puzzle game more about stealth. I thought this was going to be a game I would enjoy solely for the story and the story and characters are the best bit of it. It's a linear game (so not open world) - but it's very detailed and in the later stages of the game the combat and stealth are quite tricky and the puzzles take a bit of thought too.
I found myself very invested in the dynamic between the central kid brother and sister - heart wrenching stuff.

Untitled Goose Game (Switch) - 5/5
Just Lovely. Nails everything the art style, the size of the area you play in, the humour - just so much fun. I would have preferred if you could go about the tasks in multiple different ways (stealthy Hitman styple) instead of having basically just one solution

Ori and the Blind Forest (Switch) - 5/5
Wonderful. Great platforming, puzzle solving, story, action, art style and music. One of the most beautiful environments I ever got to explore in a vidoe game. Just a thoroughly magical experience.

Gris (Switch) - 5/5
As someone that appreciated Journey but just wasn't that into it. I thought Gris was an absolute master piece.
Its a platform game about processing grief and depression, with some not very subtle symbolism. The platforming isn't particularly deep and its not supposed to be - the game takes about 2.5 hours to complete so you can complete the game in one sitting if you wish. Its really more of a game to soak up the art style and visuals and get the feels than challenge you - but there were a few decent puzzles. I don't think a game has ever so clearly articulated feelings of despair and the feelings of coming through to the other side of grief. Seriously what a goosebumpy, emotional experience this was, definitely a very special game.

Going to finish Zelda LA than get onto Night in the Woods and Celeste

Obviously derivative of Journey but it shouldn't really get knocked back for that. Just a lovely, well paced experience that makes you care about a shark of all things.

Observer (PS4)

That was quite the experience. Observer goes from bearable to uncomfortably creepy to utterly terrifying quite quickly, but without the use of cheap jump scares and cliched horror thrills. I like my horror games, as you well know, and Observer is up there with the best.

Should be a VR title (if it isn't already?).

9/10

The 90s Animated Series had to call the Sinister 6 the Insidious Six because the censors thought it sounded too scary for children. They also weren't allowed to show guns or use any word relating to death(hence villains shooting lasers and making vague references to "destroying" Spider-Man throughout the series). I thought the Sinister Six were called the Insidious Six for years because of that.

90% of my marvel knowledge comes from the 90s animated shows. Spider-Man, Ironman and fantastic four cartoons were all kinds of awesome
