Trouble is, a 5 is associated with being "absolutely terrible". Nowdays a 7 is used for average; maybe an 8. Death and Hell* took away all scores under 7. But AP lives on in our hearts!

Image not working for me here, but that's a reference to the last issue right?

I hate the skewed average system in games journalism. I'm sure its to placate publishers, and to prevent copies being held back from hard reviewing games sites (for fear of it effecting sales), but its a practice that is hardly in the public interest. And there are so many independent review sites out there now i'm not sure it serves that purpose anyway.

Yeah, I still get excited about reviews appearing and I enjoy reading / watching them, but I don't really let them influence my purchase choices too much. If I like the theme and ideas of a game, I'm willing to overlook tech issues and any jank; within reason, of course. Similarly, if a game's theme doesn't appeal then I'll hold off even when high scores are awarded. You gotta get down with stuff you enjoy, not stuff that others enjoy :-) .

Agreed :D
Some of my all time favourite games have jank in them. I find opinions of forumites that I tend to agree with works for me.

The problem I have though is that there are too many games and too many of them are 8s/9s/10s that mean the overlooked uncut diamond just won't get a look in.

CoD: BLOPS (PS3)

Just completed the campaign. That was fun if not typical of any Call of Duty campaign in that it has it's high and lows, some awesome moments, (the Vietnam sections for instance), and some WTF is going on moments.

I forgot that on completion it throws you into Zombie mode with JFK. That was bizarre and damn hard on your own. Lasted 6 rounds. :dread:

Katana Zero - Switch

7.5 - Fine. Nice tight controls and very interesting gameplay loop, but no where near as satisfying as it could be. Throws all its ideas at you early, and doesn't really expand on them. Limited by a plot that thinks it is clever than it actually is and short length. Decent, but not epic.

This is a game I want to get into but I have just too many "openworld" things on the go to be able to! Definitely something I would like to start at some point, though.

Cuphead - 9.5/10 (Switch)

Great experience. Comfortably one of the hardest games I've ever beaten. Only docked half a point for the crappy RNG you get in King Dice and the Devil.

So, after letting photo-mode consume way too many hours, I've completed Shadow of the Colossus.

The Collosi really do steal the show, as does the world - impressively textured, naturally formed terrain and stonework somehow manage to define the game as much as the collosi - and although I didn't expect it to be so light on story, the conclusion made a surprising impact. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I certainly wasn't expecting that.

7.5/10

Would've been a solid 8 if not for the jank and Agro not being able to turn while galloping full pelt.

Mortal Kombat XI

Main Story + Plat Trophy. Big Fan of the story mode, Netherelms really are way ahead of the competition when it comes to fighting game story modes. Game play solid as always even if not totally in approval of the slower pace. However the ridiculous Krypt and loot model has earnt it a place at CEX post plat yesterday along with Overwatch.....odd feeling having money coming into my account due to gaming for a change.

Uncharted 4 - 9/10

I've never played an Uncharted game before but I absolutely loved this. Thought the story, characters, voice acting etc were all great and I was really absorbed in the story. The gameplay perhaps got a lot repetitive because there wasn't a huge amount of depth and the puzzles were a little reptitive at times (although also very enjoyable) but I loved the modern day Indy, action adventure movie feel to it. The set pieces ranged from the great to the incredible too. Also, needless to say, it looked incredible and I spent a lot of time just admiring the scenery.

I think I'll give the Nake Drake Collection a go at some point in the future. And Lost Legacy of course.

I did too. Never owned a PS2 or 3 (and wasn't interested in the remastered versions) and 4 was a huge tech achievement for the PS4. I imagine there's a fair few of us to whom it was the first Uncharted.

Seems odd starting at 4 when you miss all the character/relationship development.

I dunno, must be me, but I try to always start from one in a game. It's a decking nightmare at times though

4 is definitely worse without 1-3 and yet it's still 9/10 B)

Oh you're right, for sure! I definitely felt I was missing the impact of some emotional beats. I was only ever playing it for the spectacle though, and came away fairly satisfied with that aspect alone. Wouldn't say it was 9/10 (probably a 7, with some individual scenes reaching a high 8) but I had fun with it.

Uncharted is a series that is definitely on my "games that mean I really need to get back into the PlayStation brand" list.

I keep leaving it too late to jump on board - I was going to pick up a PS3 toward the end of its life to play stuff like Uncharted, but then the PS4 was announced and I thought I'd wait for that and see if things got remaster releases, which they did. But then when I got round to thinking seriously about getting a PS4 it seems like the 5 is on the horizon and will be backwards compatible so now I'm probably going to end just waiting for that! :fp:

I look forward to playing Uncharted 1 on the PS6 sometime in 2026!

Play Uncharted 2. It’s the best one in the series.

Also Lost Legacy with the two chicks is great. I loved the open world aspect that took main chunk of the game. But I guess you have to play U2 first as that’s where the series introduced Chole.
