What Remains of Edith Finch - 5/10

IDGI. This is basically the Gone Home situation for me all over again.

Also quit on Recore, so I didn't finish that one. I really hated it before I quit. The combat scenarios are awful. I was really disappointed by it, I think there's a good game in there, but they don't really do a good job of bringing it out. Also, Unity seems to run like total ass on anything.

Spiderman (PS4) - 7.5/10

Even though I picked this up around release it never hugely grabbed me, each time I played it I had fun but I never felt that desire to rush back to it. It has been played on and off ever since in fits and starts but I really cracked on with it over the last couple of days to reach the end.

Overall, I loved the city traversal - it is just so much fun to swing around the city and it captures the feel of Spiderman perfectly. Everything else is really well presented and feels like a Spiderman comic come to life. It really does a remarkable job of capturing what a superhero game should be. I also liked the sections where you play as other characters, the stealth mechanics aren't amazing but it broke up the other parts of the game quite well, as did the puzzle solving elements. However, I did have some issues with other parts of the game...

Firstly, the combat, although satisfying I found it got a bit repetitive and at times I just wanted to move on from fighting hordes of goons. I think it's probably one of the major reasons the game didn't have me hooked, it just got quite tedious to battle the same hordes of enemies in section after section.

Secondly, the story - I felt like we had a very slow build up to the whole Mister Negative/Martin Li thing, similarly with Otto becoming Doc Oc. That was in contrast to the introduction and shortly after, the defeat of the other members of this game's Sinister Six. I think it definitely could have had some better pacing, more time to deal with Rhino, Vulture etc. and build up to the boss battles with them. Their introduction just felt anti-climatic to me as it amounted to little more than having a boss fight and even then you were fighting two at once. Admittedly the boss fights were brilliant but I'd have loved to have more time in the story dedicated to their characters rather than so much being dedicated to Mr. Negative and the Demons

Minor gripes, the camera at times I felt got in the way and there were occasions such as in the last two boss battles where it was more of a hindrance than a help at times. Also, the controls, though perfect for a larger open world felt occasionally clumsy in more confined spaces - fortunately these were few and far between.

Still, a very good game and I had a lot of fun with it - there's loads of potential to build on for the inevitable sequel. I don't normally score with .5's but a 7 felt too harsh and an 8 perhaps a little too much!

Celeste, 8/10

Overall I enjoyed this, towards the end it became apparent that my talent (or rather, lack of) for 2D platformers became a barrier so I was very thankful for the overly powerful assist mode (at times, I tried not to use it for every screen, just when I’d spent longer trying to complete one before I turned more on) to help get me through the game to see the end. Lovely story to the game as well.

Ok I was typing this out as I was watching the credits..... there’s an 8th chapter! Guess I’m not done just yet

Edit, chapter 8 seems to be blocked off by some of the collectibles you can gather throughout the previous 7 chapters? Might be something I’ll come back to at a later date then! Still got other new games to make a start on or games I really need to get back to.

ONLY 8/10???

Kidding, glad you liked it. Yes there are some collectibles for that last level, and that’s all I’ll say...

Shadow of Mordor - 8/10

I liked this a lot. The combat is extremely satisfying in terms of how feels and sounds. Loved the Nemesis system. The collectables actually have a point as well.

Abzu - 7/10

Too many triangles. Nah, I thought I would hate this (as I universally hate these types of games), but it was a nice experience. Gotta be honest, I have no idea what it was about.

I assumed it was something like that. The machines seemed to be harvesting some kind of energy from the ocean.

This game proves that good soundtrack can elevate an experience. One bit in particular blew me away, the choice in music made that scene, I'm talking about the city on the sea bed bit.

I'm still surprised I liked it as much as I did.

My understanding:

Abzu in mythology is (I believe) like a primeval ocean from which power/life originates. In the game there is the ocean underneath the ocean which you see, and which both the ancient civilisation and the machines harvested for energy. The arrival of the pyramid/machines (seemingly extraterrestrial) leads to industrial harvesting and the collapse of the until then existing in harmony ancient civilisation, as everything is thrown out of balance. Through the game you return balance to the ocean (as well as having the revelation that you are one of the machines).

It's a story then about sustainability and the danger of technology allowing for overwhelming exploitation.

Fallout: New Vegas - 8/10

+ Some good quests
+ Interesting locales
+ Good weapons, items, etc and modding/repairing them is fun
+ VATS is still good
+ Exploring and generally doing whatever you want is always good

- Looks awful at times
- Can get choppy/glitchy
- Lots of bugs (quests not working, etc)
- Lots of crashes
- I didn't find the main quest/factions/choices interesting

Enjoyed this on the whole, but I spent a lot less time with it than Fallout 3. The setting and the main plot didn't grab me in the same way and so I didn't feel as inclined to explore everything or get absorbed into the lore of it all. And I'm never playing a game based on this engine again. How many times have Bethesda recycled/modified it? It's so shitty and really needs to be put to bed.

Metal gear solid 3 snake eater on PS Vita. Inspired by watching the PlayStation access play through on YouTube. Been so long I’d forgotten a lot. First time I ever managed to kill the end before the boss fight too! Controls have aged so badly. The number of times I got spotted because I was fumbling with awful controls or struggling to aim where camera was looking rather than where snake was.

But I still love this and it’s probably my favourite. I would love them to remake this with the controls and graphics from phantom pain.

And the ladder wasn’t as long as I remember

Red Dead Redemption 2 - 9/10

I started playing this on launch day and, aside from a 4 week break to play (and finish) Spider-Man, have stuck with it consistently since then. I'd normally bounce from a game that I'd spend too long on, but I just got so caught up with the story, the setting and the characters that it would have been a crime to give up on it.

It never felt like a chore and I genuinely loved the time I spent in its world and the pace you could play it at. It was great putting it on knowing that I could kick back for a couple of hours and not really have to stress about any rock hard bosses or scenarios.

I still had a lot left to do (I barely touched any of the challenges or legendary creatures), and the only thing stopping me from trying to complete everything was a lack of time to play it and a 'to play' pile that wasn't getting any smaller! But I stuck with it all the way to the credits and can honestly say it's definitely one of my favourite games.

I'm fully expecting DLC to arrive at some point, so I'll look forward to getting back into it all over again when it does :)

Rhythm Paradise Megamix - 8/10 3DS

I love these games - it took me a while to decide to buy this as I've already played the DS and Wii versions to completion. However the 40% discount on myNintendo persuaded me.

Yes there's a lot of repeated content from before (maybe 60% for me, having played 2 of the 3 earlier games), and yes the story is slow and unnecessary, but once you're through that everything is opened up as usual. It's also convenient having in on the 3DS, saving setting up the wii and finding batteries for the remote.

I finished the main story and there's still a lot to unlock, including additional rhythm games.

It's just so much proper ridiculous fun, and I hope this compilation doesn't mean that's the end of the game series.

I remember reading that the composer for it was pretty ill. He had cancer, they removed his vocal cords. Not sure what his current situation is. I hope it isn't the last one. The new games in that compilation were very memorable (the sad bear being my favourite).

I finished Batman Return to Arkham Asylum. Great game. Really poor remastering. Frame rate was total crap, the redesigned textures just don't work at all with the general aesthetic.

From what I understand, they rebuilt the game on unreal 4, and I think that might be the issue. This game was deserving of a much better port. I had planned to go through Arkham City (which is the best one, strawberry float y'all) but I can't imagine it running any better. Really disappointing.

Fallout 4 - 8/10

Returned to this after an absence of over 3 years and picked up my save game that was around 20 hours in. Wasn't really sure why I stopped playing and I was a little apprehensive about returning to a game after so long, but at the same time I didn't really want to restart and lose the time I'd put in. Fortunately I found my self quickly immersed back into the game and it was easy to pick up the mechanics and plot points. Originally I had only intended to play through the main story (Which I was just over half-way through) and be done but ended up playing significantly more and completing many of the side quests. Clocked in at just under 50 hours in the end so obviously there's still lots more content for me to play but at this stage I'm content to call it finished and move on! I'll definitely pick up the DLC down the line and return and plug some more time into it though.

Overall, as a big fan of Fallout 3 and New Vegas it was definitely disappointing in areas and I can see why it wasn't as well received as those games. It felt a lot more linear in terms of the main story and I felt like my actions had much less of an impact on proceedings. I also didn't like the new dialogue system as it really simplified everything but of course I can see why they went with it, given the voice acting. Despite the linearity though I did actually enjoy the main story and found the Institute to be quite an interesting faction - they really should have introduced them earlier for me as by the time I reached them I had already practically taken sides. The lack of a morality system was also disappointing as that had previously factored into decisions and made them less clear cut. I found that the Commonwealth was okay as a setting with some interesting areas but I still preferred 3 and NV in that respect. Despite the flaws though I still found it really enjoyable and exploring the world while getting lost in side quests was as much fun as ever. I found the combat to be much improved over the previous games which was nice as I wasn't so reliant on VATS. The base building was a new feature that was a little lost on me, I didn't dislike it but it just isn't something that I really want to do in a Fallout game so it didn't really add anything for me.

Lego Marvel Superheroes - 7/10

Finishing Fallout 4 made me think about other games that I'd poured a decent amount of time into but had never finished the main story, Lego Marvel Superheroes being one of these. It took a little while to get to grips with the controls and mechanics as it's a while since I've played a Lego game but once I got going I had a brilliant time and found myself going back to it after the main story. I loved the combinations of heroes and as a big MCU fan it was really enjoyable to see the X Men and Fantastic Four interacting with Spiderman, Hulk, Thor etc. - taking inspiration from the movies in areas whilst still clearly being based on the comics was a move that worked well for me. The core game play is a little repetitive at times but the story levels are short and compact enough that it never became a chore and the humour carried the game along nicely. I also thought the boss battles were really well done, particularly the final one. Performance was a little ropey though, at times it was running at 120hz in 4K just fine and looked fantastic but the framerate would occasionally tank for seemingly no reason, dropping as low as 30 on the odd occasion which was really jarring. I had the odd bug and crash where AI characters would just get stuck or not be in the right place, preventing me from proceeding which was a little irritating. Still, a lot of fun and I'm glad to add it to my list of finished games after sitting half-finished for 5 years!

The Little Acre - PC

I got this through twitch prime so can't comment on the cost/duration value as its a short game, but its a fun little point and click adventure with a nice story that has studio ghibli-like qualities, a lovely hand drawn art style and some amusing dialogue. An ideal game to be done with in an afternoon or as a palette cleanser between bigger titles.

I did that one, quickly realised nothing else was going to come close to it and quit out soon after.

I certainly did and it was probably my favourite side quest although I did really enjoy the Silver Shroud quests too!

Just finished the Spider-Man DLC. I really enjoyed it. I don't think it was as good as the main game. I think the highs were higher in the main game, and there's a more emotional impact in the main story also. It's still great, though and I can't wait for Spider-Man 2.
