Very addicting and mostly satisfying adventure with good comic book pacing and a reasonably satisfying climax.

Forced stealth sections and subpar, repetitive minigames caused minor point deductions.

Are you talking about the science ones? You can actually opt to skip them, but i don't think the game advertises it very well.

Ya I was. Honestly didn't realise that - would have felt a bit cheap to skip them though, I guess.

I don't mind them as a change of pace (same with the stealth sections) but they are quite basic-the developer's putting in an option to skip them does kinda feel like them admitting they aren't great though

Good point. There's no gamer on the planet who can get through the late game Sable strongholds, complete with flying nazis and whipping ninajs, but struggles with a basic match the tiles puzzle.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4)

This was a visually sumptuous and fun rollercoaster of action and intrigue. There seems to be a trend of games like this and God of War, as well as films like Logan, where previously fairly superficial franchises are exploring themselves and their characters more as they mature. This was a great way to round off Nathan's story while leaving many future threads open for new characters and situations - such as the Lost Legacy spinoff with Nadine and Chloe. I played it on the second lowest difficulty so can't really comment on the challenge of it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and my god, even on the base PS4 it is absolutely stunning. Its sad in a way that so much attention was clearly spent on every square metre of these massive worlds and a lot of it is seen for a few minutes at most before you move on.

Inside 7/10

It had some annoying puzzles. Not a bad game though, it just never really hits a stride in terms of gameplay for me. The story was completely baffling.

Slightly better than Limbo I think.

Resident Evil 2 - 9/10

Beat Leon A and Claire B on Normal level difficulty. Was amazed to unlock another big bloody load of content!!

Have only completed Resi 4 before this, and this rivals it in terms of tight gameplay, but there is less campy fun. I found Mr X absolutely fine mechanically - not tedious because of the excellent map system allowing you to plan routes. The weapon variety is great and the environments and enemies feel clever and varied.

Only docked a point because the unavoidably repetitive nature of the campaigns is dull.

I have Resi 7 unplayed on my shelf and excited to demolish that eventually before returning to this.

Resi 7 is really really fun. It's probably the only new game this generation I've played. I just don't make time for gaming anymore, a shame really. Maybe I'll look into grabbing 2.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - 7.5/10

Well crafted Metroidvania which never becomes exceptional. No real original ideas, but well executed standard unlockables and good scaling in challenge. Also very good final boss.

Plot wise, te game assumes the player has quite a lot of familiarity with previous entries, and this is was my first experience with the series.

PixelJunk Racer : 2nd Lap

I’m about done & was going to give this a good score but these last four challenges are testing my patience. Why is game devs make great games then sour the mood at the end with some frustrating bollocks for the sake of it?.

I’m playing sudden death turbo. What you do is drive around the track slowly & precise as you can whilst dodging nukes with wheels. The frustrating part of this that makes me want to kick the devs in the shin is that sometimes (I mean most of the time) when you get to a corner there is no lane to get by because there is a gang of nukes in the bend.

That’s not fun. That’s annoying. That makes me want to kick you in the bollocks until you are dead. Really frustrating.

I would off given it a 4/5 because barring this, it is a joy to play :(

Hey ho 3/5

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - 6/10

+ Retains the core of what made the first game good
+ Still enjoyable/satisfying to plan an assault on an area and execute it perfectly

- Teammates are thick as gooseberry fool
- Dumb enemy AI
- Forgettable/uninteresting plot
- Looks ropey at times

GRID 2 - 7/10

+ Looks good
+ Good range of cars
+ Nice mix of race types
+ Can be very enjoyable when you've got the right mix of car/track

- Career mode is too long...really felt like it was dragging on
- Relatively few tracks, so there's lot of repetition, especially across so many events
- AI cars are like tanks that can't be moved, but if they clip you, you go somersaulting off across the track...really annoying
- Your engineer doesn't shut up and gets really annoying

Thimbleweed Park (Xbox One X).

A point and click that remained very faithfull to the games of the early 90s that I loved so much. Played it through on hard and found most of the puzzles to be logical, with a great built in hint system when I felt I required it.
Recommended if you are nostalgic for games from a long forgotten generation.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna The Golden Country (NSW)

This was the first XB game i had ever played, and starting with a standalone expansion to the base game seemed like a risky move, but i fancied a more compact JRPG than the last few i had played.

My main concerns before starting the game were that:

a) I would not be able to follow the story
b) The combat mechanics would be overwhelming

Neither of these really proved to be an issue, in fact the combat systems really quite intuitive. The only criticism i have of it is that it feels like there are too many systems in play, almost as if it wants you to make progress even if you only really understood 25% of it. This did mean that grinding was kept to a minimum however, and i always seemed slightly over leveled by just following the critical path.

The story was told by some high quality, well voice acted cut scenes interspersed by some not so high quality non voice acted scenes. Overall the balance felt pretty good to me. Resolution looked decent (but not native) in both handheld and docked mode, with occasional slow down in high effect battles and the music was some of the best i have heard for a long time. Like, really really good.

The game does get a bit bogged down in fetch quests about 3/4 of the way through, but i actually started to enjoy them and felt it drew me in to the whole community that you were fighting to protect.

In the end i cleared the game in about 24 hrs and had a pretty good time with it overall. It never does anything particularly special in my opinion, but it tells a good story and offers an engaging combat system to keep you entertained for its duration.

Bayonetta - 8/10

Sequel is a 9, so this is an 8. A little more grubby and cheap in terms of the gameplay mechanics. Overall less vibrant. Plot is nonsense. Ending cinematic lasts a good 20 minutes.

Still great fun and consistently brilliant throughout.

Hotline Miami - 8/10

Good game balancing twitch skills and some minor planning/strategy. Classic Devolver plot - total nonsense, but good pacy action. Having played Katana Zero as well, I'd say they're about on par.

Soul Blazer on SNES. This was a fun although brief (I beat in two sittings across the course of the weekend) and pretty basic action RPG. 7/10 looking forward to playing the superior “sequels” Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.

Steamworld Dig - 8/10

+ Looks nice
+ Subtle but effective music
+ Satisfying to play / progress
+ Decent length

- Can get a bit dull...I had to play in quite short bursts at times as it wasn't holding my interest

Took me just over 8 hours to complete this, and that was with mining pretty much everything and getting all but a couple of the upgrades. It's taken me months of on-and-off playing, but I enjoyed it overall.

Finished up Ys last night. Really good fun little game with some awesome music. The final boss was a but if a dick and I got a bit grumpy dieing to him a few times, I think it being 3am may have contributed to the grumpyness. Anyway great game will play Ys II soon and then we'll see how it changes from 3 onwards.

The combat is odd though. You just walk into enemies to damage them, though if you walk straight into them you also take damage, you have to run at them off centre to damage them.wothoit being hit.

Well, errr.

Yeah he was a pain, floating around shooting gooseberry fool everywhere which wasn't too much of a problem it was hitting him and the floor breaking and either getting stuck in a place where you couldn't hit the boss and then you'd die, or the floor going from under you and then you'd die. Still loved the game though.
