Paper Mario: The Origami King

A pretty big disappointment. For every thing the game did well it did something wrong or inexplicably stupid.

On the positive side it's beautifully presented. It also has some clever boss battles which make subtle but interesting changes to the standard battle system. There's also a fair amount of game here to sink your teeth into with some fun mini games or changes in play style to mix things up.

In terms of the negatives there are plenty. As reviews mentioned, the standard battle system just isn't fun and very quickly becomes repetitive and annoying to the extent I was trying to run away from encounters whenever possible. Another major annoyance was a few instant death or fail sections which forced you to have to replay through some previous stages due to poor checkpointing - while infrequent these bits were especially annoying. I also had issues with the amount of backtracking in the game and just not knowing what to do at times.

All in all a real disappointment. Probably the worst Nintendo produced game I can recall playing for some time.

Finally got round to playing that Deliver Us the Moon game since I saw it was on Gamepass. Love me some sci-fi.

It's alright for one of those narrative-puzzler kinda games. Think it starts off better than it finishes. Launching the rocket and the initial zero-G sections really make you feel like you're a proper astronaut, but the very last section really puts a bit of a damper on the whole package. Trying to align the last MPT while your guy keeps passing out and pushing the stick out of alignment was the most frustrating way to end what'd been a pretty decent game up until then

It was good fun all in all, though. Will go through to mop up the rest of the achievements, because somehow I missed a few collectibles

Does seem to leave a lot of lose threads, but I guess since it was a Kickstarter game that's pretty much par for the course. Plays like a cheap game in places, too. Really juddery at times.

6/10 but it'd be a 7 if it was a little more polished.

There was a similar zero-G demo I played on a VR headset the once and I'd love a full VR space game. No chance of me ever going into space otherwise :slol:

I also enjoyed The Downward Spiral Horus Station on PSVR. Arguably not a classic, but it felt really immersive, especially the first hour or so, where you are pushing off of (and grabbing on to) scenery elements.

Just completed a 66 day round the world trip in 80 Days and I really enjoyed it. Was kidnapped by nuns at one point and later survived a sinking airship after attempting to prevent a mutiny.

Just a lovely, chilled way to spend a few hours.

Really looking forward to having another trip and see what other adventures I can discover.

Deus Ex on PS2

Better than you'd think and has its own vibes, more approachable than the proper PC version in its own weird way thanks to absurdly generous autoaim and a funky but usable UI redesign. The crunchy audio due to being a CD release and *terrible* model/texture redesigns have their own charm, too.

Love DX1's atmosphere to bits n pieces so having a way to throw it on a TV and play with a controller is rad. And it's one of those ports where just its existence is crazy enough that it feels cool to have, even just through the PAL-only PSN rerelease.

Solid 7.5/10 for me.

Another well written, well acted story from the director of Her Story.

Bigger in scope than its predecessor, but very much cut from the same cloth. Will be going back to it to unlock some more video files (I have apparently only found about half of them so far).

You probably already know if this is for you. I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - 9/10

Comfortably the best in the main series for me. The writing and twists are a step up from what came before, and the newly mechanics supplement the existing formula and gameplay nicely.

Finally finished Resident Evil 3 on hardcore today. Even with a few of the power coins, the final boss was ruddy difficult. Bought the dodge power up after finishing so that dodging will be easier if I play it again. As much as I love it, I don't think it's as replayable as RE2.

Hollow Knight - 9/10

I loved that. I got 70% complete. I don't want to go for 100% yet. Time to read up on what the strawberry float it was actually about (Cause I literally have no idea).

Untitled Goose Game (Switch) - 8/10
I've only played through this once in 2 player with my son, which meant there was some shared grief being limited to the single screen. Other than that, I suppose my biggest bug bear is that I'd have liked more; its rather short and expensive for what it is. Still, it's damn good fun while it lasts.

Lego DC Supervillains &
Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 (PS4) - 8/10
I'm a little burnt out with the lego games formula truth be told, but these two are the pinnacles of their respective series and there's plenty of entertainment value in 2 player. Finished both the story missions at the weekend with my son, so just working through the tonne of side content - you get plenty of bang for your buck!

Katana Zero (1X)

Decent game with fun mechanics. I must admit i had definitely had my fill by the end (about 5hrs). It had started to get a tad repetitive at this stage, and sometimes the difference between a successfull run and a failed one was so small that it was a bit unsatisfying.

Lovely pixel art. I would have thought it impossible to have anything that does not seem ripped off from something else at this point, but it certainly has its own style.

Great music - one of the best soundtracks i have heard this year.

I have no idea what the story was about. Felt a bit pretentious, but i did appreciate the branching dialogue. That being said i am never good at following stories in games as i am always trying to parse what worked and worked did not, what mechanics i forgot to use etc on the previous level / world.

Shovel Knight: King of Cards - 7/10

Part of a package that represents potentially the best value on the Switch. A very solid platform-action game with a tacked-on passion project, taking the form of a grid-tile based game which is pretty simple, but charming enough. Music and animation are great, but the writing doesn't even begin to compare to Shovel Knight or Spectre Knight's campaigns.

Luigi’s Mansion 3; 8/10 - a joy to behold [100% finished at roughly 28 hours], inventive boss battles and full of humour and lovely touches. Absolutely gorgeous, almost Pixar levels of animation. I’ve yet to tuck into the multiplayer but looking forward to it.

Spiderman Ps4.

I didn't finish it, but I finished it as far as I will. I.e. got to the point it was too much effort to carry on, and would rather have just watched someone else play it to the end instead.

I mostly loved it, though. May well come back to it for another crack someday, to get to the end and unlock all the suits.

I think I got put off by a couple of the battle fort things, and the odd boss fight, where I think is where I stopped enjoying it and gave up. Up till then, it was cracking fun, even some of the initially annoying bird chasing things became entertaining.

Some minor niggles, like a slightly uneven pace, or dull puzzles. But those were very minor.

Loved a lot of the suits, the commentary, many of the baddies, the freedom of swooping through the city especially. That was probably my early lockdown game for a month or two, and what a great sense of escapism too.

I'd give it an 8 or a 9.

Goldeneye DS 5.5/10
Fun but rather forgettable port of far superior Wii Version, does condense a lot of the levels to feel rather small, fun tank section. But the game has awful frame rate, being incredibly short and feeling no different to the cod games.

Tales of Vesperia (360) - 7/10

+ Looks very nice
+ Combat is enjoyable (only became a slight chore towards the end of the game)
+ Good protagonist
+ Dungeons are mercifully brief compared to Tales of Symphonia (my only other frame of reference for the series)

- Annoying characters
- Annoying 'skits'
- Clichéd writing and tropes
- Lots of backtracking
- Plot was absolute nonsense
- Unskippable cutscenes

I've listed more negatives than positives here, but I did enjoy this, it's just hard to put my finger on why exactly. :slol:

I'm not sure I'll play another Tales game if they're all like this and ToS though, they're so formulaic and predictable. I don't know whether the Definitive Edition addressed any of the issues, but some of the issues would be so easy to fix. It had quite an odd ending as well, really brief and lacking in any kind of real detail or resolution.
